Tenants complain about delay in remodeling of municipal market parking lot

      Tenants of the downtown market "Javier Rojo Gomez" are unhappy with the delays in work on the parking lot, which is affecting their profits, and some have closed for up to a week, since they are not getting enough business to pay an employee. The restaurants are most affected, who say the dust annoys diners, and some chose to close and give their employees time off. They say on hot days it is dusty and the work progresses slowly and on rainy days there was no dust, but there was bad flooding in the parking area.

    At a press conference about the open water swim called "Isla to Isla", organizers said registration will be limited to 300 swimmers, and they hope to make this an annual event. It is scheduled to be held on July 11, with the swimmers departing from the area of Flamingos in Punta Sam to the Posada del Mar beach in Isla Mujeres. This is a distance of 7.2 kilometers, of the clearest and most colorful water in the country. 
   They said in the past month, they have already registered over 150 participants from places like Mexico City, Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, Mérida, Playa del Carmen and Cancún, and they expect to meet the maximum in upcoming days. The event is backed by the  Federación de Natación y Triatlón (Federation of Swimming and Triathlons). 
     In addition to promoting sports tourism in Isla Mujeres, this event also aims to promote Isla Mujeres as a vacation destination, and there for there will be a food event on the Posada del Mar beach starting at 6pm. There will be samples of food from various restaurants and hotels of Isla Mujeres, made with fish and other seafood, encouraging the swimmers and their families and guests to stay and enjoy this holiday destination. 
      This event is expected to generate positive economic benefit with about 1500 people participating and attending including athletes, families, coaches, and friends.

      Martin Trejo Manzano, representing the 160+ whale shark tour licensees of Isla Mujeres, said they are not willing to abide by the provision of the DGVS (Wildlife Department) that they should only work every other day. He said it will be respected until June 15 or 18, but that it has no sustento jurídico (legal basis?). He said their group proposed a Management Plan several weeks before the start fo the season, which was never considered by the DGVS.
      He said, "Our plan has sustento juridico; we have the knowledge because we perform this activity daily; we know all about their lives since before groups were organized. We also have support from biologists based on in-depth studies of the species, their behavior, and their habitat."
    He said under the federal agency's Management Plan, each licensee would only be able to work on 60 days of the season, plus you must consider days lost for bad weather, problems with the boats, and cancellations, which would surely encourage piracy.
     He said the counterproposal is to rest one or two boats of Isla Mujeres for a week, since supposedly the Domino project is an activity that was created in 2001 as an alternative for the fishermen of Isla Mujeres, Holbox, and Chiquila.
   Members of the group appeared before the mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez at City Hall, who listened to their statements and promised to intercede with the federal authorities to achieve a consensus that will provide justice, a healthy solution, and successful development of tourism activities.

Friday morning the City Council approved the Regulations for Isla Mujeres Municipal Civil Protection agency unanimously, after it was read and discussed by the Commission of Sports, Police of  Seguridad Pública, and Policía Preventiva & Tránsito.
     The law establishes the protocols for coordinating the actions of agencies at a municipal level to prevent or respond to accidents or disasters. It increases civil protection and provides protocols for appropriate actions in the case of municipal emergencies, as well as the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs in this area.
     It will be published in the Official Publication of the state, and the version published March 31, 1998 has been repealed. The proposal for this law was originally presented by Mayor Agapito Magana on January 20.

Level of Salina Grande lake rose

June 12... The heavy rain that fell on Thursday brought relief to the Salina Grande lake, which has shown signs of toxicity with large numbers of fish dying after the recent weeks of drought. Preliminary unofficial estimates are that the water level rose about 10 centimeters.
      The rain that fell for a few hours was sufficient to cause thousands of cubic meters of water to fall on streets of the colonias of  La Gloria, Cañotal, Miraflores, Caridad del Cobre and Salina Grande. If more rain falls, the pumps may need to be activated which serve the two bodies of water (Salina Chica and Salina Grande) to prevent the lakes from overflowing.

The Navy will have a booth showing their diving equipment as well as their rescue program to combat pollution at sea, and a conference that is open to the public entitled "Mangroves".
The CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) will have a exhibition of various ways to produce electricity, aimed at grade school children.
The Human Rights Commission will have a booth and the state Director will inaugurate the fair, with the Mayor.
The labor union CROC is supplying volunteers and had donated ornamental plants, to be used for reforestation.
 The DIF is participating and will be giving away discs showing how to conserve water.
 Aguakan will have a booth, who often work with NGO's.
The Maritime Terminal is organizing a Drawing Contest titled "A Child's View of Caring for Nature" ( “la mirada de los niños en cuidado de la naturaleza”), and the ferry company will be responsible for the prizes.
The Veterinary Clinic of Isla Mujeres (La Clínica Veterinaria de Isla Mujeres AC) will have animals available for adoption and materials available about pet care.
The Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) will have a booth about the work they do as programs for reproduction and care for sea turtles.
The Municipal Ecology department are actively participating and will have a booth featuring the actions of their agency in favor of ecology.
The NGO Green Patrol/Paturlla Verde will present photographs from 15 years of educational work on the island.

June 7, Sunday  Election Day (for Federal legislators)  Restriction of sale of alcohol to go and in some local bars. Alcohol has been sold in tourist bar-restaurants during past elections.

June 13, Saturday 10am or 11am 1st Gran Cabalgata (Mounted Parade) on Rueda Medina, from downtown in front of the Ferry Terminal along Rueda Medina until the Unidad Deprotiva (colonia Salina Chica?), where they will go toward Jesus Martinez Ross Avenue, then to the intersection of Paseo de los Peces in colonia La Gloria and over to the coastal road, to the southern part of the isle, stopping at the paths (dirt roads) in that area. After the horses drink water, they will take the same route back north to the chapel La Guadalupe and then gather at the El Pescador ballbark.(in front of Cheraui) The procession is expected to take about three hours. There will be a special brigade to remove the feces, and there will be collaboration with the Traffic police and Civil Protection to ensure a safe event. There will be entertainment at the park until 7pm, including the band "Laguna Verde". A donation of 20 pesos will contribute to the fund for the construction of a seminary being built in Bonfil.
  The procession will include riders from  Tizimín, Kantunilkín, Valladolid, Cancún and Isla Mujeres. Rain is forecast for Saturday, which could cancel the event.
