Turisteros preparan nuevo material promocional de atractivos de la ínsula
Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 29 de abril.-
Leer más...The municipal Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco, said that new promotional materials have been created for the upcoming Tianguis of Mexico to be held May 6-9 in Cancun. The material highlights activities in Isla Mujeres such as the celebration of Carnaval, the boat procession to Isla Contoy with the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre, the Feast of the Immaculate conception, the regattas, and of course, the whale shark season. The brochures also contain information about local cuisine, and underwater attractions such as MUSA, the underwater museum, and include images of pirates and the unique archeological remains of the area. During the event, they will feature the promotional video of Isla Mujeres.
The Director believes that these efforts will create a 25% increase in occupancy by the end of the year and for next year. He said this promotional material is unique, and not simply a pamphlet like you normally find at the fair, but rather it is an informational booklet that includes the most important attractions of the island. He concluded by adding that these have been printed in English and Spanish, and will be available for the travel agencies and tour operators who will be attending this important, international event.

This cultural event included the presentation of four books, cultural lectures, workshops, and tours of the fair, and was aimed at encouraging the habit of reading in the community of Isla Mujeres. The Book Fair was sponsored by the Grupo Bibliónica and the municipal Education agency, and opened on April 14 on Morales street next to City Hall with publications such as Diana, Grijalbo, Editores Mexicanos unidos, Alfaguara, Trota and Planeta.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will promote Isla Mujeres in their 2015 Calendar.
This is the third time that members of the squad have been featured at locations in Quintana Roo for their calendar. The 2013 calendar featured the Riviera Maya; for the 2014 calendar they were in Cozumel, and the upcoming calendar features Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Next year they are expected to include other destinations such as Holbox.
There are currently 32 members of the squad visiting locations in Puerto Morelos, Cancun, and Isla Mujeres. This NFL team has the most followers in Latin America, especially in Mexico, and the Dallas sporting franchise sells the most souvenirs and promotional articles in the United States.

In the wee hours, the first six competitors of the XLVI Regatta del Sol al Sol arrived, with the "Sweet Melissa" being the first boat to cross the finish line.
The sailboats were expected to arrive on Sunday, but the lack of wind caused delays. Although 18 competitors were expected, there were only 15 taking part in the Regatta. Three withdrew at the last minute due to a strong storm. (a fuerte temporal). The six yachts that arrived on Tuesday are (in order): “Sweet Melissa” “XTC”; “14 Pennies”; “Orlant Express”; “Tatto” and “Blue Heron”. These results are not definitive, because their placement depends on the category in which their boat is competing, and the winners will be announced on Friday
On the island the celebrations will be held May 8th at 5p at the Community Center Dome and May 9th at 5p at the CENDI center.

Cierra Capitanía el puerto a la navegación menor
0 28 de abril de 2014
Por Carlos Gasca > Quequi .- Embarcaciones menores de 40 pies no pueden salir a navegar.
Due to strong winds, at 7am on Monday, the Harbor Master closed the port for navigation by boats under 40 feet. This restriction includes the tour boats that travel to Isla Contoy and those that travel outside of the Bay, however tour boats were allowed to travel within the inner Bay. Strong winds were expected for Tuesday, also. This suspension affected more than 300 boats, and the ferry boats continued to operate as usual.

Failing anti-hurricane cages
Cede jaula de gaviones antihuracán[+] Ver mas The anti hurricane cages (jaula de gaviones) that protect the seawall have been damaged further by the force of the waves caused by the winds from the south. Earlier this year they were damaged at their bases during cold front 24, and this damage has now expanded, four months later. The government has not responded to reenforce or level these foundations, and when Dutch visitor Anke de Jong was told of this alleged negiligence, he responded, "In my country, close attention is paid to the protections from the seas to the north; constantly inspecting and reenforcing the walls and 'contentions' because we have experienced flooding and loss of property first hand." It is presumed that there were deficiencies in the construction of these cages which extend nearly a thousand linear meters when were installed less than ten years ago. At that ime, the wall was renewed after being severely damaged in Hurricane Wilma. That was the second installation, because the former was poor. It has been reported in this and other media that, that according to experts the wall lacks sufficient strength to protect the community if a hurricane hit with the same amount of force as Gilberto in 1988, which broke rocks at the area of the cages. Edgardo Marfil recalls that when those rocks broke, a road was opened for the sea at the street Allende. It can be seen that the cages look rusty, and it is noted that that a specialist company should be hired to attend to the parts that are most affected in anticipation of the upcoming hurricane season, which is June 1-November 30. Children's choir performs at Catholic Congress Coro infantil interviene en congreso católicoVer mas A children's choir of 35 youngsters from Isla Mujeres participated in a rally in Merida this weekend, to a crowd of about 10,000 young people. They were well received and will perform again at 8am on April 30th, Día del Niño, at the close of the XIX Congreso del Niño Jesús, a regional Catholic youth conference. Without services due to lack of personnel Sin servicio médico por falta de personal[+] Ver mas The Family Medicine Unit ( FMU ) of the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE ) has not been providing services during the morning shift for the past few days, due to a lack of personnel. The first shift ends at 2pm and the next shift is staffed, which continues until 7:30pm. There are also complaints about the lack of medications and reimbursement for travel expenses for those who receive specialized treatment off the island. Some complainants have made calls to Chetumal, without response, and the state union leaders have not taken up the issue. New accusation of defrauding a tourist Nuevo caso de defraude a turista[+] Ver mas |
On Tuesday the Department of Tourism received a complaint from Roger Martinez, a Latino resident of Chicago, who said he had been sold jewelry that was purported to be pure gold but was gold plated. He said he is a frequent visitor to Cancun and showed the bill of sale for an "Aztec Maya" charm of 14k gold for $150 dollars which was paid by giving $50 in cash and putting 1350 pesos on his credit card. When he consulted an expert, chemicals revealed it was only gold plated, and that it weighed 6 grams. He thought it was 9 grams of pure gold, which would be valued at 6000 pesos. He said he did not have time to file an official complaint with the Public Ministry. The accused business is “Internacional Jewels”, owned by David Alberto Santos Rivera, which is said to be part of a group of businesses related to a previous alleged fraud at "The Silver Mine". According to the CFE, Electrical Commission, this is the same facility that had an alleged evasion of electric charges with a 'diablito'. In that previous case, the Director of Tourism at the time (Jahil Hoth Perez) assisted a couple from Boston, who were reimbursed $625 for two pieces of silver jewelry. There was also a case where the previous director of Tourism, Viviana Chan, intervened to assist an English person who bought 14k "gold", with involvement by PROFECO at that time also.
