Licensees seek help

To be able to work with more than one permit during this whale shark season

Permisionarios piden ayuda

Para trabajar con más de un permiso en temporada del tiburón ballena

Given the strong possibility that whale shark tour operators who have more than one permit may only be able to use one permit for this season, the operators asked City officials to intervene. About 30 tour operators went to City Hall to talk with the Mayor, to seek a way to not be affected during this upcoming season, which begins May 15th. This problem was created by a change in the Management Plan of the Wildlife agency.
Those who hold multiple permits say they were not given adequate time to regularize their permits, as is required by the new amendment. In the meantime, they have commitments with travel agencies who bring thousands of visitors to participate in the whale shark tours. It is noted that this could disqualify about 80 permits in Isla Mujeres, which would mean about 150 tourists daily would not be able to go out, over the four month period, (hypothetically), which could discredit this destination.

For Día del Niño the City Council listened to kindergarten students who were temporarily 'appointed' to their positions, as part of a school project. The adult Directors and Council members explained their roles to their small counterparts. After the meeting, the students were given a tour of City Hall, and enjoyed sweets and gifts.

Atienden brigadas a 937 personas

So far there has been a total of 42 medical brigades in mobile units who have served a total of 937 people in the neighborhoods and communities of the municipality, providing care, information, services, and medicine to those who need it. The services include general medical consults, prescriptions, and early detection of disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, cervical or breast cancer, among others.
Since November there have been two doctors and two nurses from the Health Department at the Senior Citizens facility every Tuesday to provide monitoring and review of those who attend there. They had detected respiratory and diarrheal disorders, as well as chronic degenerative diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
Next week the services will include psychological consults, for the conduction of group therapy, and for the detection of cases of domestic violence and depression who would be given individual therapy. There will also be a dentist to provide prophylactic treatment and rehabilitation.
These services offer health care coverage to areas with limited attention, which include areas on the mainland as well as the island., and they are joining forces with other public institutions such as SESA, IMSS, and ISSSTE, to provide more medical coverage for residents. This has been a commitment made by the Mayor.
In addition to these services, it is noted that the hyperbaric chamber was reactivated, through efforts of the Mayor, after it had been out of service for several months. Another issue to be remembered is that the municipal, state, and federal governments have worked together, and soon the specialty hospital will be a reality in Isla Mujeres, with all of the benefits brought by that. It is noted that these accomplishments in health care and efforts to have a healthy community have been made seven months into the current administration and are continuing.

    Suspenden cruces de vehículos pesados

    0 30 de abril de 2014

Por Carlos Gasca > Quequi .- On Tuesday in Punta Sam at the ferry loading area, one of the steel cables which raise and lower the ramp broke. This left more than a dozen heavy vehicles unable to cross. Yesterday (4/29) afternoon a truck of three tons was allowed, but heavier ones still could not go aboard. The company expects to restore service to heavy truck on Tuesday, which is a situation that concerns many entrepreneurs who expect merchandise or building material.

Bureaucrats to enjoy Monday off: Long weekend

Burócratas gozaran lunes de puente[+] Ver mas
Monday will be a holiday for an extended weekend, commemorating the Battle of Puebla, and bureaucrats will have the day off. Therefore, Thursday was scheduled to have normal activity, when a parade for Labor Day / Dia del Trabajo was scheduled for 8am by the city union members. The parade route includes Adolfo Lopez Mateos avenue, and a tour down the main street/malecon of Rueda Medina, concluding at the Town Square. The school calendar has both days as a holiday, but at least one campus will also take off on Friday to provide a five day holiday.
This long weekend is expected to improved occupancy, and the boat tour operators expect increased business. No special security operation is planned. Attention will continue to be paid to keeping Rueda Medina clear, and each golf cart rental agency is allowed to put on only one unit in the street, but it is noted that usually more than that amount are parked.
On this Labor Day holiday that is celebrated by union workers, the 15% increase in taxi rates will take effect, increasing the fare from 13 pesos to 15 pesos for the colonias. Esa misma proporción de ajuste se dará en los demás costos de traslado en otros puntos de interés turístico, aunque para la gente local hay precio preferente, según la dirigencia del gremio de operadores del volante. I think this says:  The same percentage of adjustment will apply to the other touristic points of interest, but for the local people, this is the preferred price, according to the leader of the union of taxi driver.

Massive death of fish in Salina Grande
Masiva muerte de peces en la Salina Grande[+] Ver mas
The cause of the deaths of fish in Salina Grande is unknown, and speculations are made in the article that is may be due to contamination, rather than from lack of oxygen.  Garbage and runoff is noted, and said to be concentrated from the area of the Blue Dome. Neighbors wonder if someone inconsciente has been dumping chemical in the water.  The problem of dying fish was first noted late last week, and on Wednesday they were seen in the area where people capture fish for consumption (en la orilla de la laguna pequeñas mojarras). Children who use the perimeter walkway daily said the fish appeared suddenly, and then piled up on the shore with the passage of time. In another case, there were some dead fish at northern part of Salina Garnde, but it was not widespread. There has not been a comment from the Environmental Protection agency PROFEPA.
It is noted that the 15 hectare lake is shrunken currently, and in the rainy season when it gets too high, the excess is pumped into the sea. Suffocation of fish is generally associated with low water levels, but the opinion is given that it still has a good level, and that this implies that discarding chemicals is a likely cause of the mass death.
