A special edition of the Recycling Waste For Food program took place yesterday morning at the green dome in colonia Salina Chica. The officials were there to monitor the success of this social and environmental program and to maintain a warm, direct contact with families. These officials included: Mayor Agapito Magaña Sánchez, and the following state officials: el diputado presidente de la Gran Comisión del Congreso del Estado , José Luis Toledo Medina, and el diputado Juan Carrillo Soberanis. (A diputado is a legislator & these are state legislators.) This program was instituted by Governor Roberto Borge and has benefited thousands of families in Quintana Roo. It has been so successful, that it is being copied in some states in Brazil. The program benefits families and the environment, and causes cleaner public spaces and streets.

Whale shark tour providers seek exclusivity
-
Conflicto
Exigen náuticos exclusividad de permisos
0 16 de mayo de 2014The "Nauticos de Isla Mujeres" united with their fellow licensees from Isla Holbox, "Lazaro Cardenas" to request that whale shark permits be granted exclusively for these two islands, and not for the benefit of Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Although the season officially began on May 15th, no one can work because the Federal Wildlife Department has not released the permits. The regulations were changed to limit one permit per person, which will cause problems for the licensees who had 10 boats operating previously. There were 260 licenses in the registry last year. The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, has not yet received the permits for the licensees.

Juan Carrillo Soberanis, the legislator who represents islanders, and grandson of Cancún icon Juan Carrillo Padilla, was in town for the Recycled Trash for Food program event. In an interview he named proposed laws he is involved with which included the new law of Primer Empleo, (First Job), as well as the Real Estate Services Act, and the Civil Planning Law. The latter was his initiative and has passed and is awaiting official publication. He said he is committed to doing a good, thorough job, and not just being a bench warmer. (y no sólo ir a calentar la curul.)

In an emotional ceremony at the Monument to Teachers, officials recognized and thanked teachers who had served the community for 25 years or more. This included: Loyda Velásquez Chi for 30 years of service, Cristina Medina Figueroa 30 years of service, Gilberto Jiménez 30 years of service, and Raciel Román Rivero for 25 years of service. An emotional response was evoked when a speaker talked about former teacher “Pepita”, Josefa Adame, who inspired him to become a teacher, and now he is also a legislator. The teachers were treated to a meal of cochinita pibil tacos after the ceremony, courtesy of the City officials.

Port closed due to cold front
Cierre del puerto por el frente frío [+] Ver mas
The port was closed for navigation by small vessels on Thursday evening due to the effects of Cold Front #55, to continue on Friday due to gusting winds and high waves. Therefore no one was able to go whale shark sighting, but unofficial sources reported three boats went out on Thursday to see the whale sharks. Forecasts indicate that the front should decrease on Saturday, but the whale shark licensees are still awaiting their permits.
It is noted that there are a group of 15 service providers who held some 80 permits of the island, according to collected data as follow, which is considered an incomplete list: Aldo Alvarez Chaviano with 12 permits; Marcelo Cupul 9, Javier Ayala 9, “Queso” 9. An anonymous person said if the federal government does not take control, it will be similar to the situation we have where concessions for over 400 golf carts are in the hands of 15 people who were chosen by the state government.
It is reported that there are a good number of whale sharks outside the protected area, and in the western section of the protected area, and that a few private boats took tourist out without permission, according to unnamed sources.

This is the youth league "Sub 13", and they are in week 10 of the first round of the circuit, after a tied game against the Pumas on Friday. Girls are allowed to play in the league, because there is no girl's league.
Islander Jovana Abigail Pérez, now 13, is on the team and has been playing since she was eight years old. The other girl playing with the team is Keila Sinaí Garrido Kú, whose history is similar. The Isla coach decided to include the girls to help promote the formation of a girls league, and so they will be ready to compete when it occurs.
Jovena faced the points of attack from the boys with toughness, defending bravely, and wearing uniform #1. Her family cheered from the stands and her coach gave instructions from the sidelines.
