The mayor initiated an ongoing clean up campaign to keep the streets clean in the various colonias in Isla Mujeres. The program will also include placing trash bins along the main streets.  The Mayor said that one of the first demands of the people was to maintain clean colonias and parks.  In response, this program begins today, and the street lighting program will begin tomorrow. He explained that Public Services are a priority, and they have been cleaning up the Trash Transfer site, and patching roads. This clean up campaign began in the coloniaof Lol-Beh and the park,  Las Frigatas. He spoke about the need for islanders to help keep the colonias clean. The director of Public Service, Manuel Figueroa Cetina siad there will be 50 trash cans distributed along main streets, and 20 people will be employed permanently to sweep the public areas of the island in the mornings.

As part of the month for the fight against breast cancer, the president of the DIF, social service agency led a march to raise awareness. During the event she made a special appeal for women to sign up for free mammograms with the DIF, noting there are 34 spaces remaining.  Participants wore pink and carried banners and signs saying "Mujeres con vida" as a message of hope and awareness. Dozens of people walked from the monument of Benito Juarez to City Hall.

  The building continues to be abandoned after it was expected to be completed two years ago, and it is being used as a hangout for people who drink. It has suffered from the salt air, and its electrical cables have been stolen.The City blamed the delay on the state Department of Culture, arguing that they had already paid their share. The work was budgeted at 3 million pesos but was not completed and no one knows when it will be finished. Neighbors say if no action is taken soon, the money already invested will have been wasted.

  The Director of Public Services, Manuel Figueroa Cetina said 600 tonnes of trash have been removed from the trash transfer station, and he expects the rest will be taken to the mainland within ten days. There are also plans to promote the habit of recycling, and the trash transfer station is working at separation of trash, bit it is a task that should begin in the homes. The Amigos of Isla Contoy organizaion has placed collection bins in strategic locations, but this is not enough. The Director said "If people decide to adopt this new habit, trash handling would improve, and there would be less time and space needed to transfer the trash.  When the new administration took office, there was about 1500 tonnes of trash, which has been reduced and should be removed within ten days. They plan to regularize trash collection before the end of the year holiday season when waste production increased by about 40 percent, said the official.

Hotel occupancy is only at 28%, with the HIM (Hotels Isla Mujeres) group reporting 23% and the other hotels are at 31 percent, reflecting that fact that it is not the small hotels who are filling their rooms. The big hotels like Aluxes, which manages the all inclusive Ixchel, are not members of HIM.  There is an influx of visitors between 10am and 5pm. Now the fee for trash collection is going up, and may triple causing businesses who paid 300 pesos to begin paying 900 pesos monthly.  There was a complaint by an anonymous person about calculating garbage fees based on the number of rooms, because then you pay whether it is occupied or not.

The former head of the municipal Tourism Promotion agency,  Álvaro Magaña Galué, was appointed City Treasurer, leaving his position empty, which is causing complaints for hoteliers, who are also disappointed that Isla Mujeres did not have a presence at the Travel Mart this year, at the Cancun Convention Center. The hoteliers say that last year the Expedia wholesale agency sold 20% more rooms during high/winter season, and rates were raised by 11 percent, which is attributed to efforts of the Tourism Promotion Board last year. There are concerns that occupancy this winter will be affected by the lack of a Director to be promoting now, and by missing the opportunity to participate at the Travel Mart Convention.

UPCOMING EVENTS  

.In October there are occasional releases of baby turtles that were incubated at the Tortugranja, at dusk on the eastern beaches of Media Luna or Guadalupana. (Last year the last public release was Oct. 7). The Blue Crabs migrate with the full moons, and there are usually organized groups to help them safely across the roads. Watch out for them in Sac Bajo and along the southeastern part of the island. The American holiday of Halloween is observed by the expats & a few candy loving kids, while the whole community observes Day of the Dead on November 1st & 2nd. Special foods are available in the weeks before, and Hanal Pixan altars appear in mid or late October. The Orianid meteor shower due on the 18th & 19th will be affected by light from the  full moon.

The Ramon Bravo Underwater Photography Contest was cancelled. Oct 20-22 

The Artist's fair will be the third Thursday in October due to the change of government & will resume being the first Thursday in November.  Oct. 17th, Town Square 4-7p.

Isla Mujeres Artist Fair

Sydney Adams is one of our Isla Mujeres Artists. Her mediums range from recyclable art to drawings to paintings to custom shoe wear. She & her husband Lalo own & operate Love Around Waffles on Ave Francisco, just West of Madero. In addition to participating in our monthly Artist Fairs Sydney displays her art at Love Around Waffles. She will be debuting her custom designed shoes. You bring white canvas shoes & she will make them a piece of wearable art. She does, childrens, womens & mens shoes. They range from $30 to $70 (US) based on the design. Beverly Willard

I visited with Bonnie Hamilton last night at the Artist Fair. She mentioned PEACE has passed out 283 moto helmets to island children...I think it is a great cause as well as Isla Animals, Little Yellow School House. There are a lot of "us" living on Isla, part-timers or just on vacation....If you are looking for a great way to give back to Isla I suggest supporting PEACE!

I took photos downtown of the artist fair & at Playa Norte around sunset..should have time to post them manana.
