Tropical wave affects visitors

Onda tropical afecta a paseantes
ISLA MUJERES, 24 de agosto.-The article begins: "The god Chac was felt on the island and according
to the National Weather service, the rains will continue throughout the
weekend". It says the tropical disturbance had the (a small) potential of becoming
a tropical cyclone (hurricane..it didn't & was no big deal) in the next few hours. It says the
weather chased tourists from the beaches, and to take refuge in the
Catholic church where they prayed for the weather to stop so they could
continue to enjoy their holiday. Tropical wave #15 is expected to extend
over Quintana Rood, Yucatan, Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas causing
moderate to heavy rains. (Yesterday and this early morning were overcast, then it was sunny, at midday the clouds are increasing.)

Cemetery: Neglected tourist attraction
Tourists attracted by the story of the "pirate" Fermin Mundaca are disappointed to find it unkempt
Cementerio, atractivo turístico entre el olvido y el abandono

Turistas llegan al lugar atraídos por la historia del “Pirata” Fermín Mundaca, pero se sorprenden y desilusionan al verlo sucio y descuidado
Jennifer AGUILERA
ISLA MUJERES, 24 de agosto.- It says the town cemetery is one of the main tourist attractions of the island. Some islanders will take visitors on a guided walk through the most significant sites of the island; down the cobblestone streets, to the church, the main square, the City Hall, and of course the municipal cemetery where they are told the legend of "Pirate Mundaca". But unfortunately the tourists encounter broken tombs in need of paint, rust, bones in plain sight, and candles or flower cups with rainwater that can cause mosquitoes, turning the visit into a 'total fiasco'. The tour guides explain that the tomb of Mundaca was designed before he died, and he was buried in Merida, not Isla Mujeres. The legend goes that "Pirate" Fermin Mundaca was from Spain, and came to reside on the island as a conqueror & superior, so he was hated by the community. (se sentía conquistador y superior a los residentes por lo que era odiado por el pueblo). One day the 53 year old fell in love with a 16 year old Islander named Prisca Gomez Pantoja, known as "Trigueña”, who snubbed and ignored him, although he offered all his riches. She gave her love to another man, while the pirate ended up dying of melancholy in Merida. (and yellow fever)

Thanked for their service to islanders |
Agradecen servicio en pro de isleños |
They have not only rescued people on the island, they fight forest fires on the mainland. Their department suffers from a lack of resources, but the small force is dedicated, respected, and trained. They have taken training through various institutions including courses in Basic Firefighting & Rescue from "Caritas" group, and Immediate Response to Bomb Threats taught by the Federal Police. For Firefighers day (Dia de los Bomberos) they were recognized by the director of civil protection with special mention to Luis Antonio González Martínez for 8 years of service, Josué Amílcar Ravell Barrera with 7 years, and Armín Ariel Tuz Armín Dzul, with six years of service. Other firefighters are Emir Idelfonso Vallejos Gómez, Josué Amílcar Ravell Barrera, Gerardo Reyes Azcorra González, Iván Dovaly Lor May, Juan Vásquez Jiménez, and Mónica Florentina Zúñiga Velázquez. Avanza lento obra del nuevo hospital
0 24 de agosto de 2013
Por Carlos Gasca-QUEQUI. The construction of the new Specialty Hospital in Isla Mujeres continues to progress steadily, and Islanders are looking forward to its completion as a solution to many of the health care problems at this location. Next month it will be a year since the construction was restarted. It was discontinued for two years before that, until money was invested into the project. Now the work is at 40 percent, although initially it was expected to take one year.

Teachers request clarification about benefits
Maestros amenazan con manifestarse+] Ver mas
Teachers of the school "Julio Sauri" in Isla Mujeres met on Friday around 7pm on the school premises, and there was a rumor that certain benefits for teachers may be canceled. The teachers requested a clarification from the Dept. of Education / Secretaría de Educación, Sara Latife Ruiz Chávez and the leader of sectin XXV, Rafael González Sabido, about the possible suspention of benefits under Concept 41 and the Special Bonus (GE / Gratificación Especial). Teacher who work 40 hours receive 1500 pesos monthly under Concept 41, while the GE of ~5000 pesos is given with the aguinaldo (required year end bonus). There have been demonstrations around the state, but they are waiting for clarification on Monday and have petitioned the appropriate representatives about this and other concerns such as the lack of teachers in some of the schools, construction & improvement of infrastructure in the schools, retirement, retirees bonuses, retroactive salary increase, rearrangement of staff & changes in health services, and incomplete textbooks.

It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony, and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!
There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
Please slow your speed and try not to smash us. This week they are crossing b/c of the full moon.

They are usually closed on Sundays. A local expat who stopped by the other day was raving about how good the food was & how nice Ibette is...and that her English was great..but that something got lost in translation..and she thought he was ordering a number of items on the menu that he was asking about. So he had a Menu Tasting, unintentionally & loved it all. He's planning to be A Regular there.

Eggsitting Adventures Chapter Two (There is a good chance this story
may end badly). Last night The Barricade stopped a Mama who shoved it
and dug behind it.(hit rock & quit). Then, she went RIGHT around the lounge, moved the log a coupla yards,
and dug into The Nest. She went back to the sea w/o laying (that area is too rocky for most). From the
one broken egg I saw this morn, (*eww), they are still developing. This is a Before Picture, I put the sand &
barricade back. We've seen about 8 destroyed eggs...they lay ~100. No one knew the eggs were there, until the nest was disturbed, and then it was too late to move them to the Tortugranja. I think it is due to hatch out in 1-2 weeks.
