A falta de recursos de autoridades y pescadores para enfrentar gastos

Jennifer AGUILERA

ISLA MUJERES, 25 de agosto.-The annual procession of the fishermen taking the icon of the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre to Isla Contoy is scheduled for Saturday, September 7th. It will begin at the Church of Immaculate Conception on the town square at 8am and depart at 8:30. Mass will be celebrated on Isla Contoy, and the return to the island is expected at 3pm. The city is in a difficult economic situation and may not be able to supply 50 liters of gasoline. The organizing committee is working out the logistics to transport around a thousand parishioners, and the tourists, as well as the Virgin, canopies, sound system, chairs, food, beers, sodas. There is also the question of disembarking to consider since there is not pier; therefore a larger boat, like those that carry 500 people, would mean people would have to wade/swim about 100 meters. They decided to use two older boats of 120 passengers.

A small shack-like home (un palapa de carton) was rapidly consumed by flames on Saturday night around 7:30 pm, causing the death of fifty year old José Germán Pacheco Caamal. It is alleged that he was under the influence of alcohol, and presumed that the fire was accidental and caused by an electrical short. The home is located on Hidalgo avenue, block 11, lot 10. There is an investigation and the body was taken to SEMEFO, the medical examiner.  (That is at the south end, near Casa Sirena and the Baptist church)

Por Esto reports there were only about 150 people at North Beach, and about 70 at the Posada beach. Restaurants are only at 30 percent capacity. We were at Fenix Sunday afternoon, and the bar and nearby tables were full of people eating & drinking, and the dance floor and beach were also full of people. Then we went to hear the band at Iguana's and they had a good crowd also.

Fishermen seek other jobs

With summer vacation over, demand for lobster in the restaurants has decreased, and the fishermen are finding other jobs such as carpenter, painting, electrical, and other temporary work. One man said, "Fortunately, as fishermen, we can go out to get something to eat, but we have many other costs such as fuel, electricity, school, water, and other family expenses." He regrets that the financial problems of the city meant the final payment to the fishermen was not made, and he hopes the next administration continues the assistance program.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
