The Federal Electricity Commission, CFE, has worked with the City Anti-Hurricane Committee since June and has a stock of transformers, insulators, fittings, poles, electrical conductors, and other equipment available in case of a hurricane affecting this part of the state. This is part of the "34 Points" program. They have taken preventative measures such as trimming trees, especially in areas around Garrafon where there is abundant vegetation. Statistics show that every three months the branches grow enough to potentially cause a short circuit, which they try to avoid with this preventative work.

The boat ambulance remains docked at the Lima pier, and the Harbor Master explained the paperwork needs to be completed by the Ministry of Health. Islanders are hoping that now the elections are over, that the state government will fulfill its commitment to provide this service. Previous articles noted it also lacks funding for captains to operate it.

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- Since the downtown was remodeled with enlarged sidewalks, there has been traffic congestion at times during holidays such as Easter, Christmas, and Carnival. The problem is aggravated by the construction of the new Ferry Terminal, which has closed the parking lot by APIQROO. Some islanders are complaining about the poles and overhead lines that were supposed to be removed with the remodeling of main street, Rueda Medina. -

This state program was resumed yesterday and will continue.

He left London and eventually built an "island" in Isla Mujeres from recycled bottles & other objects. He says the real "crazies" are those determined to destroy the planet with the large amount of trash they generate. He encourages people to join nature and avoid consumerism, which generates massive amount of trash, noting "Then we would have a clean world like the Garden of Eden that God created for Adam & Eve."
He says his project was not well received in Oaxaca and he was asked to leave by the authorities. He spent some time in a wealthy area of Puerto Aventuras where he was welcomed, and he started building there when he received a "sign" for his project: a fish shaped island with a special name--Isla Mujeres.
The house has mirrors to collect solar power, which he uses to cook his unique "Dessert of Fifty Fruits". He has a traditional kitchen with a gas stove, and cooks meats over wood. There is a rainwater collector for his Jacuzzi. The bathroom has an "ecological latrine" which involves mixing plants with waste to form compost, which is used to grow vegetables. For washing clothes, he has a water jug attached to blades that spin in the wind.
It is docked in an inner lagoon of Isla Mujeres, with luxury yachts and sightseers nearby, as well as residents of the island, who refer to Richart as "El Loco (the Crazy One) with the floating house". They know he is sociable because they see him walking around downtown collecting plastic bottles, but few locals would dare ask for an invitation to visit his individual version of paradise. It is called JOYSXEE, and includes over 100,000 plastic bottles
This video explains his solicitation of funds online and from people visiting his home, and tells how his first 'island' in Isla Mujeres ended up as trash strewn on the beach & in the ocean after Hurricane Emily. He is collecting money to add spiral attachments that unfold outward, which he thinks will allow him to take his home across the seas of the world educating people. It is located in Sac Bajo.

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo - ..La Verdad reports there were more than 250 families participating in this Recycling Waste for Food event, who exchanged ~18 tons of recyclable material for any of the 35 basic food products (which are included in Mexico's "canasta básica"), in addition to seasonal fruits and vegetables. Other services available included haircuts, medical care, and an interactive children's area with volunteers offering education about care of the environment using drawings and paintings.

Occupancy reached 65% on Saturday, and restaurants reported they were operating at 70%, with many diners ordering lobster and fish grilled tikin xik style. The boat tour operators were doing a good business also. Sunday is expected to be even busier. The reporter noted girls in tiny bathing suits looking beautiful while sunbathing, reading books, listening to music, and having a refreshing drink.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases usually start around the end of July & are held periodically until early October.
Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling.
There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

Scientific American magazine has an article about MUSA, the underwater sculpture museum LINK, and here are some excerpts. (There are over 400 statues now). (July 19 by Eric Vance)
Five years ago, desperate to give relief to one of the most heavily used coral reefs on the continent, a group of conservationists and artists teamed up to create an alternative to draw the tourists away. Today the underwater museum they created at a sandy shore just short of the Manchones Reef, off Isla Mujeres, showcases a collection of 200 beautiful humanlike statues.
The idea for an underwater sculpture garden came to Jaime Gonzalez, director of the Isla Mujeres National Park in Cancun, in 2005 after he saw how 87,000 tourists every year were literally loving the reefs to death. That year he had tried dropping “reef balls”—spherical artificial reefs....The tour operators were not impressed. Gonzalez, frustrated and disappointed, considered banning divers from the reef.
He found Jason Taylor, a British underwater sculptor who had built a few underwater sculptures in Grenada. Roberto Diaz, then-president of the Cancun Nautical Association that represents divers in the area, immediately began raising funds. (So far it costs $12,000 to create and install each statue.) Ironically, they were soon so popular that tour operators complained when algae moved in.
Again Gonzalez compromised. He cleaned half of the statues, using his bare hands and steel wool, and let the rest continue on their way. As he cleaned, fish would hover behind his shoulder, waiting for him to expose urchins snacking on the algae that they would then eat. Without urchins to eat it, the algae just came back. But on the rest, their urchins intact, another layer of calcium-laying organisms grew underneath the algae and now represent beautiful maturing mini reefs. In some cases sponges moved in on specific spots, such as a statue’s lips, giving the impression of lipstick. “What I never expected were the sponges,” Taylor says. “Because the sculptures are placed in an open area where there’s lots of current, the sponges are able to filter nutrients from the water. So you are seeing these amazing bright yellow, pink, red, blue—all these different types of amazing sponges.” Read more HERE
