Yucatan & the dinosaurs are in the international news again....with a 66 million-year-old story.
Strong evidence emerged in the 1980's that the abrupt extinction of about 75% of world's species, including non-flying dinosaurs, was caused by an asteroid hitting the earth at the end of the Cretaceous period. Scientists believe this impact occurred 200 miles west of Isla Mujeres, resulting in the 125 mile-wide "Chicxulub" crater. This week, researchers from Austin say that the concentrations of asteroid dust found inside the impact crater has "closed the case of what killed the dinosaurs". They say this puts to rest alternate theories that it was a series of volcanic eruptions or some other global calamity.
The impact of the 7-mile-wide asteroid would have sent vast amounts of vaporized rock into the atmosphere for up to two decades, blocking out the sun and causing an extended global winter, before falling back to earth. Scientists discovered evidence of this in the concentrations of iridium (Ir) found in clay sediments that were laid down at that time, all around the world. This element is abundant in asteroids and extremely rare in the Earth's crust. This Ir layer is formally the 'golden spike' that defines the end of the Cretaceous period and the Mesozoic Era according to the Geological Time Scale.
It was the discovery of high-energy iridium deposits around the Gulf of Mexico & Caribbean in the 1990's that lead to the discovery of the Chicxulub crater and its unique stratigraphy. The new analysis of nearly 3000 feet of rock core from the crater below the seafloor was published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed journal "Science Advances". In the crater, the sediment layer deposited after the strike is so thick that scientists were able to precisely date the asteroid dust to within two decades after impact. UT professor Sean Gulick said, "If you’re actually going to put a clock on extinction 66 million years ago, you could easily make an argument that it all happened within a couple of decades, which is basically how long it takes for everything to starve to death."
A separate study of the cores in 2019 revealed that the crater rock was depleted of sulfur, compared to the surrounding limestone. This suggests that the impact blew large amounts of sulfur into the air, which would have contributed to the cooling then fallen as acid rain, worsening the situation on the ground. Scientists have also found evidence that the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean experienced huge tsunamis at the time of the impact. Today, Isla Mujeres reports another case of C-19 for a total of 275 with 25 deaths and now there are 229 recovered. The state geoportal for still has the data for February 25rd and continues to report 6 active cases in Isla Mujeres as: Meteorologcio-3, Salina Grande-1, Amp la Gloria-1, and colonia 006-1.

 The municipal DIF (social service agency) has begun distributing the 215 "pantries" donated by OXXO, and will give 114 on the island and 101 in the Continental Zone, to those in need due to this health crisis.  Yuseli López Tec, director of the DIF Isla Mujeres,said when the pantries were donated in early February a call was put out to single mothers to register, and registration is still open at the DIF Facebook page. They should leave their name and phone number and will receive a time and date, in order to avoid agglomerations which can contribute to the propagation of Covid-19.




 TVisla Mujeres 

 There is no official date when the ferries of the Molina-Aviomar company will go into operation, but TV Isla Mujeres says it could be next week. The company is recruiting personnel to work in Puerto Juarez and in Isla Mujeres where it is expected they will open a new ticket office. The two boats, "Jetway 1 & 2" are moored at the dock from which they will operate, where shrimp boats were previously docked, which is to the south of the Ultramar terminal and has public parking.
