On Jan 1st, Isla Mujeres reported five more cases for a total of 242 with 21 deaths
and199 recovered. The state geoportal for 12/31 continues to report 2
active cases by colonia, with one in Amp. La Gloria and the other in La
Gloria. For 1/1, the national map reports 171 suspicious and 142 negatives.

There is a crew of 15 workers with ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone agency) who clean North Beach and Playa Centro daily 5am-10am, including collecting trash, raking & sifting the sand, and removing sargasso, to keep the beaches in optimal condition in the New Normality. To avoid reclassification on the state epidemiological light, measures on the beaches to prevent the possible spreading of C-19 will be maintained indefinitely, so that both residents and visitors who go to the beach will have to follow the regulations for admission.
The municipal Public Works department has started the year with a program of repairing potholes in both the colonias and the tourism areas. The recent rains caused the streets to suffer some damage and the Mayor has assigned the workers the task of repairing the potholes in response to citizen requests. They are beginning in the tourist areas of Punta Sam and Costa Mujeres on the mainland and as weather permits, they will work in the colonias to repair all the potholes in Isla Mujeres.
Isla Mujeres closed out 2020 with an economic recuperation that is gradual, orderly and responsible.
The municipal Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco said that the year would close out with a hotel occupancy rate up to 50 percent. He attributed this to the commitment of the state, municipal and business authorities, with the implementation of various health protocols and to the natural beauty of the island, with it high-quality beaches and Pueblo Magico designation. He said a great effort has been made to maintain a balance of caring for health and economic recovery and measures against coronavirus will continue to be implemented in order to achieve the much-desired green color on the state epidemiological light. He said that in the year that is beginning, the health situation is expected to improve, which would allow for more tourism coming to this destination, but this will only be achieved with everyone's commitment to caring for themselves and others, and complying fully with hygiene habits against the virus.

Public events have been suspended due to C-19. Holidays have featured online competitions and events.

usual Patron Saint festivities from late November until her Día de la
Inmaculada Concepcion on December 8th are suspended, but the priest will
celebrate a Mass with a holy rosary each day for each of the groups and
organizations, according to a schedule.

Sunday, Dec 13-14 Peaking of the Geminid meteor shower--This is one of the two best showers of the year (the other is August Perseids). The sky will be dark all night (new moon) & the largest numbers will be visible around 2a (when the radiant point is highest in the sky). But you should see them from mid evening until dawn, weather permitting. There should be a 'smattering' of meters the nights before & after, and it builds to a peak the week before. This shower features meteors that tend to be bold, white and quick, with up to 50-150 per hour when peaking in optimal conditions, like this year's moonless sky. On Dec. 11,12,13, the slender lunar crescent and planet Venus will rise in the eastern sky at or near dawn.
Posadas Navidenas Dec 16-24 will be suspended along with the decorated Caravans.
