The state geoportal for 12/23 continues to report 2 active cases by colonia, with one in Amp. La Gloria and the other in La Gloria. A
manatee was seen in recent weeks near Punta Sam, and now near the area
of the Isla Mujeres lancheros (small boat-owners). There are concerns it
may be injured, and personnel from Dolphin Discovery are trying to
locate it. (Screen shot from video posted by IM Noticias)
From the City (Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres)
The latest round of the fumigation schedule against the mosquito that causes dengue, zika and chikungunya was completed on December 23rd, including both the mainland and the island parts of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, by the state workers of Jurisdiction Number Two. They have covered Francisco May and Rancho Viejo in the Continental Zone, as well as the island, on three occasions in the past six weeks when this program was conducted from November 16 to December 23, with the aim of reaching every colonia in the municipality. The municipal Secretary General, Miriam Trejo Leon, reminded residents that it is important to avoid having breeding areas on roofs or in yards and patios. She noted it was necessary for island families to open their doors and windows during the spraying to help this work be effective.

Isla Mujeres continues to recover its hotel occupancy rates
Hotel occupancy is between 40 and 50 percent according to the municipal Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco, who noted that although these are difficult times for the tourism industry, the business sector is committed to taking care of the health of visitors and island families. He said, "Without question we are facing a new challenge with this pandemic and new ways of tourism, but if anything characterizes those of us who live in Isla Mujeres, it is knowing how to face these adversities together, and this is what we are doing; the restaurateurs and hoteliers are complying with sanitary measures, and as a municipality we should not let our down our guard."
He said it is necessary to strengthen the application of sanitary measures such as the correct use of face masks, maintaining healthy distance and avoiding agglomerations. Thanks to coordinated work between the municipal government and the business sector in response to the health contingency caused by the coronavirus, the economic recovery of this destination is progressing in a gradual, orderly and responsible manner. Mr Rodruguez said that while the current hotel occupancy is less than is normally expected at this time, in the face of the health situation we are going through, these are good numbers, and it must be remembered that the health of both the island families and our visitors is a priority, so that economic recovery can be carried out responsibly.
Large public events are banned in Quintana Roo to prevent a rebound of Covid-19, and the municipality of Isla Mujeres is complying with this strategy. Miriam
Trejo León, municipal Secretary General, explained that these
measures are aimed at preserving the health of island families at all
times and therefore that of the state residents (Quintanarroenses), so in accordance with COFEPRIS (Department of the Sanitary Risk Protection of Quintana Roo), every event
will be reported to the Attorney General's Office (FGE). She said, "We have to be aware that we are still in the midst of a pandemic and
the first thing to care for is everyone's health; we must be responsible
and avoid large gatherings at all costs, so we are taking these measures and there
will be no permits to conduct such events."

Sunday, Dec 13-14 Peaking of the Geminid meteor shower--This is one of the two best showers of the year (the other is August Perseids). The sky will be dark all night (new moon) & the largest numbers will be visible around 2a (when the radiant point is highest in the sky). But you should see them from mid evening until dawn, weather permitting. There should be a 'smattering' of meters the nights before & after, and it builds to a peak the week before. This shower features meteors that tend to be bold, white and quick, with up to 50-150 per hour when peaking in optimal conditions, like this year's moonless sky. On Dec. 11,12,13, the slender lunar crescent and planet Venus will rise in the eastern sky at or near dawn.
