Isla Mujeres History on Facebook & Website

Stargazing conditions have been pretty good lately---hopefully that will hold for tomorrow night! There should be some meteors tonight, but tomorrow's the night to watch, peaking ~2a (early Monday morning).

The best meteor shower of the year peaks tomorrow night at ~2am (when the radiant point is overhead/farthest from the horizon) but the "shooting stars" should begin between 9p & midnight and continue until dawn. The Geminids are known for being bright and slow, with occasional 'fireballs'. While they appear to radiate from an area above Castor & Pollux, the meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. The sky will be moonless & astronomers are hoping for 100-120 meteors per hour around 2am. They recommend a comfortable lounge chair away from light pollution & giving your eyes time to adjust.

Isla Mujeres continues to report at total of 226 cases with 20 deaths and now there are 193 recovered. On the national map for 12/11, the municipality reports 167 suspicious and 125 negatives. The state geoportal still has the data for 12/10 which says 1 active case in colonia Canotal.

Dr Lopez-Gatell announced that Mexico has approved the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine

Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell said, "Mexico is added as the fourth country whose health regulatory agency, COFEPRIS, has granted authorization for emergency use of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine against Covid for prevention." Meanwhile, the United States has not yet approved it. Dr. Gatell reported that Mexico joins the United Kingdom, the Republic of Bahrain and Canada who have already given their approval to this vaccine. Yesterday, the 24 members of El Comité de Moléculas Nuevas unanimously approved it.
Dr Gatell explained that the first stage of vaccines will be given this month of December to health personnel who work on the front lines against Covid-19, starting in Mexico City and Coahuila. Subsequently, from February to April 2021, it will be given to the remaining health personnel and people over 60, as the second stage. The third stage will take place from April to May 2021, when people from 50 to 59 years old are vaccinated. The fourth stage will be from May to June 2021, for people aged 40 to 49 years. The rest of the population will be vaccinated from June 2021 to March 2022 as the last stage.

Sunday, Dec 13-14 Peaking of the Geminid meteor shower--This is one of the two best showers of the year (the other is August Perseids). The sky will be dark all night (new moon) & the largest numbers will be visible around 2a (when the radiant point is highest in the sky). But you should see them from mid evening until dawn, weather permitting. There should be a 'smattering' of meters the nights before & after, and it builds to a peak the week before. This shower features meteors that tend to be bold, white and quick, with up to 50-150 per hour when peaking in optimal conditions, like this year's moonless sky. On Dec. 11,12,13, the slender lunar crescent and planet Venus will rise in the eastern sky at or near dawn.

Posadas Navidenas Dec 16-24 will presumably be suspended along with the two decorated Caravans.
