Ultramar manager Arturo Baez said that although fares have increased in Cozumel, ferry rates in Isla Mujeres aren't changing. He said they are in the second stage of implementing the new digital system for ticketing that uses scanners. In a few weeks they be issuing new credentials that can accumulate points and will offer discounts at more than 4000 businesses, and also includes a subscription to the "Press Reader" application that provides access to thousands of newspapers and magazines worldwide. Ultramar staff are now equipped with electronic tablets for counting passengers. Customers can access an app that displays their credits (tickets) and the number of accumulated points that they can exchange.LINK

Fishermen with empty nets

On Monday, the fishermen using nets didn't catch many lobster, but their nets were full of sargasso, while the divers said the waters were still cloudy, so the weren't capturing many either, and those using traps also had poor luck. The passage of cold fronts generally causes the lobsters to move into the fishing areas, and the season will end on February 29th.Isla Mujeres news briefs

The first brief is about the beach handball tournament, which was already translated. The second says the Cockteleros remain leaders in the IV Baseball Tournament of the Northern Zone after defeating the Vaqueros of Leona Vicario 8 to 5. The third brief says some parents of the high school students at Colegio Bachilleres want increased supervision of the teaching staff by the state, because the parents claim staff absenteeism reaches 30 percent at times. On Tuesday, Nov. 19th, there will be no classes due to a work stoppage as a result of a lack of benefit payments to the teachers.Naveganto will return

The Tourism Director said that there are currently 7,360 rooms in operation in the municipality of which 1,883 are on the island (in 66 hotels), and there are 5477 rooms in 11 hotels on the mainland part of the municipality. This winter, there will be 1,973 new rooms for a total 9,333 rooms in the municipality.The hotels Paradisus, Royalton--named Planet Hollywood, and the Catalonia, will open in January. The Majestic hotel is already marketing its 498 rooms for December and the Villas del Palmar will have 103 new rooms for a total of 471. The number of hotel rooms on the island remains at 1883.
The managers of the large hotels expect high occupancy this winter, based on reservations they've received. The majority of those hotels maintain an occupancy rate over 70 percent, however some of the small hotels on the island report occupancy rates under ten percent.

The Festival for the Town Saint, Our Lady of Immaculate Conception will begin sometime around the weekend of Friday, Nov. 28 and continue thru her day on Dec. 8th. There is usually a Cabalgata parade of horses and a "bullring" set up (bullfights have been banned in Mexico), where there are rodeos and comedic bullfights, as well as folklorico dance performances and a night or two of live music & dancing on the Town Square.
