Looks like the Navy is cleaning up the abandoned "Bottle Islands". Ingi Fragata took the first two photos today, explaining that two men are cutting it up. This month for World Oceans Day, volunteers in boats removed some of their trash entangled in nearby mangroves. The rest are "Before" photos; #4 is "Joysxee", which is still listed on Airbnb for $479 night (#5). It has >150,000 bottles, which are at risk of contaminating the seabed in our next big storm, in addition to the deteriorated wood. The newer one was built as a documentary project.

Navy assists boat that turns out to be "cloned" LINK
Tuesday afternoon, the Navy assisted a fishing boat that had a mechanical failure, whose four crew members were in good health. After the boat was towed to the Naval pier, it was impounded for irregular documentation. The boat "Los Cuatro Hermanos" (The Four Brothers) is not the same boat by that name that is registered with the Isla Mujeres fishing cooperative "Por la Justicia Social". Its crew members are from Puerto Juarez, and it is presumed the boat is dedicated to poaching. The Harbor Master of Isla Mujeres said the case is being investigated, and the boat's captain had been advised to appear on Friday with the documents for boat ownership & registrations, fishing permits, and other documents.

More than 20 cases of decompression since lobster season ended Feb. 28  LINK
More than 20 cases of decompression have been treated at the Hyperbaric Chamber since lobster catching season ended three and a half months ago. The Director of the Hyperbaric Chamber said there is constant recidivism, due to ignorance about the diving tables and requirements. They often descend beyond 40 meters, and don't respect the safety stops when ascending, which can have fatal consequences.
In addition, they use motor oil rather than vegetable oil in their compressors, which often lack filter changes before & after usage. In addition, some fishermen have risk factors such as poor nutrition, hypertension, and diabetes, as well as dehydration from using alcohol or drugs the day before diving.  One fisherman died from decompression, who had been advised not to go back to diving.

Water heater fire extinguished

Conato de incendio genera pánico

Just after midday on Wednesday, the firefighters of Civil Protection put out a fire near Juarez avenue, behind the Contreras-Gomez family's home. It was caused by a leak in a propane water heater and a spark, which generated smoke that was observed from the second floor of the Harbor Master's offices, whose staff promptly evacuated the building.
The firefighters entered the home and quickly extinguished the fire, which occurred in an apartment that is rented to a tenant. Traffic was temporarily stopped on Juarez, and resumed shortly after the fire was extinguished. Employees of a nearby golf rental agencies expressed concerns about a potential explosion because the gas cylinder was only one meter from the water heater.
To avoid propane-related accidents, Civil Protection recommends testing lines with soapy water to ensure there are no leaks, including at the connections, where teflon tape should be applied. Pipes that are bent, dented or deteriorated should be replaced, as well as regulators that are damaged. Plastic hoses should never be used, instead pipes should be of copper of coflex.
Cylinders should be at least three meters from appliances, in open, well ventilated areas, with no combustible materials nearby. They should not be dented, corroded, welded, and must have intact heads and handles.

Electric company guarantees power in summer

La CFE garantizará el abasto en el verano

This winter the Federal Electrical Commission installed a mobile power generator plant at the side of the runway, near the area where the Naval helicopters land. Now they are constructing a foundation and building walls, which appears to be about 250 square meters, to provide a secure area for the unit. The plant is available to respond to any emergency, including a hurricane, and it is noted that there has previously been flooding on the runway during hurricane Gilberto in 1988.
It is noted that the CFE is preparing for a project to replace the submarine power cables from Punta Sam, because there have been power failures in the past two years.

BREVES DE ISLA MUJERES

A competition was held at the middle school with exhibitions about bird diversity, care of ecosystems, and the importance of putting trash where it belongs.

A teacher has been provided for high school students in Isla Mujeres who need 'regularization' of Mathematics III, who will teach from noon to 5pm on July 1-12, so that students don't have to commute to the mainland.

Wednesday was "Day of the Bureaucrat" and more than 1000 municipal employees enjoyed a day off, although those who collect trash and keep the streets and beaches clean continued to work. Federal employees worked, but state offices were closed.

Incubation pen Tortugranja (not 2019)

Turtle nesting season continues throughout June. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility.  Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres;  Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but the sand usually isn't deep enough. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.
