The new state Law for the Prevention, Integral Management and Circular Economy of the Residues of the State of Quintana Roo will be applied as soon as possible to protect the environment and its natural riches, according to Carlos Barranco, director of Ecology. The municipal government supports this prohibition of single use plastic, which should reduce the impact on the mangrove system of the interior lagoons of the island.
He said the municipal government is working on strategies for the implementation of this law and to make the transition and abandon the use of plastics which pollute and are very slow to degrade, replacing them with reusable and recyclable products that help the environment.
The state law was officially published on June 1st, and the island has six months from that date to raise awareness and eradicate the use of single use plastics. He explained that the items to be eliminated include plastic plates, straws, glasses, cups, trays, and cutlery, among others, as well as derivatives of Styrofoam. Also, plastic bags that are usually given to customers at stores will also be prohibited.

Fourth Environmental Fair LINK
For World Environment Day, the City of Isla Mujeres held the "4th. Environmental Fair " on the Town Square. The event included exhibitions by various NGO's and businesses of eco-friendly products, 100 percent sustainable projects, and materials used to conserve the environment. Participants included Amigos de Sian Ka'an, Green Day, Bio Green Blue, Aguakán, Amigos de Isla Contoy, The National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP), Manta Trust, Dolphin Discovery, Accion Isla, the high school Colegio de Bachilleres, and the private school Colegio Liceo del Caribe, as well as municipal agencies such as ZOFEMAT (Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone), Tortugranja and the Department of the Environment and Ecology.
The director of Environment and Ecology, Carlos Barranco García said talks were given at the high school the day before and activities will conclude with a big clean up at the Mundaca Hacienda, whose green areas are considered the "lungs" of the island.

The Director of Public Works, Fernando Bacelis Godoy, said that now the election restrictions have lifted, the municipal government is able to carry out public work projects such as the installation of 35 solar lights between Isla 33 and the Guadalupe Chapel. This work began on Monday, with drilling in order to place the poles. The job should be completed in about a month and will cost about 2.9 million pesos. Similar lights were installed at the Salina Grande walking path with good results, since there are no cables to be stolen.

Golf cart & taxi impounded

On Wednesday, agents with IMOVEQROO (Mobility Institute) impounded taxi #76 due to its insurance policy having alterations. They also impounded a private golf cart which lacked a concession for use as a public vehicle, which is the 13th cart impounded in the past two months. Both vehicles were transported to Cancun.The IMOVEQROO representative, Bibian Castillo Dzul, said there are 800 carts with permits among 28 legal agencies. He said a meeting was held with agency representatives concerning registration and the unique identification cards.

Young baseball players from the US volunteered to help clean up the turtle nesting beach in front of colonia Guadalupana, with local young people and children. The athletes came from Atlanta, Georgia and have been visiting in Cancun, Bonfil, and Felipe Carrillo Puerto, before coming to the island. They finished cleaning the beach around noon and then they were going to play an exhibition game with a local team. They will be returning to the US following their visit to the island.
They are players from various teams, brought together by their Christian faith. This is the tenth time they have come to Cancun to carry out awareness-raising activities for the environment and to work with young people to encourage good values in these turbulent times. They play baseball, work with young people, and visit schools. Their group, "Baseball4", visits each June and are expected to return in 2020.
Appreciation was expressed by Otoniel Cárdenas, from the church "Emmanuel Casa de la Oración" in colonia Guadalupana. The church has work for children every Saturday at 4pm and general services on Wednesdays and Sundays at 7pm.
Fatal motorcycle accident

On Thursday at 4:30am, a young man suffered a fatal motorcycle accident on prolongacion Rueda Medina after he lost control of his vehicle and hit the support cable of an electric pole. He was traveling from north to south, and a curve begins where the accident occurred, which caused severe injuries to his face. He was taken to the Community Hospital, and then transported to the Cancun General Hospital by boat at 6am, and he passed away at 7:30. His identity was unknown at the time.The scooter, which was stuck on the cable, was moved to the impound yard. The medical personnel said there was alcohol on his breath and it was said by others that he had been drinking with friends on Hidalgo in the early hours of the morning.

Maritima employees concerned about late payroll payments

Employees of the Maritima ferry company are complaining that there pay has been three or four days late for several pay periods (workers are paid twice a month). The company is said to be heavily in debt, and having difficulty competing since Ultracarga began offering vehicle ferry service between the island and Punta Sam. Maritima provided this service for the past three decades. There are concerns that Ultracarga will raise its prices if Maritima goes out of business.Only one Maritima ferry, the "Isla Blanca" is operating and their other ferry, the "Sergio Gracia" is out of service due to a mechanical problem in the "transmission" of the starboard engine, which will cost 100,000 pesos to replace.
Maritima makes five round trips daily, departing from Isla Mujeres at 06:00am, 09:00am, 12: 00pm 3:00pm and 6:00 p.m.; and returning from Punta Sam at 07:30am, 10:30am, 1:40 pm, 4:30pm and 7:30pm.

The family of former mayor Paulino Adame Torres has had a dispute for about a decade over a property near Devil's Curve, on the road to Garrafon, which consists of about 10,000 square meters, according to one family member.A family member said that a judge has ruled in favor of five members of that family, the Torres Suárez sisters, and they accused their half sister María de los Ángeles Novelo Torres of trying to take advantage by selling property without documentation during this time.
One of the sisters came to the property with a document in hand to encourage those occupying the property to sue Novelo Torres for fraud, in order to recover their money that they invested to raise their homes, since several already live there, in exchange for "symbolic payments they made of five thousand pesos".
She blamed the invasion nine years ago on the former official Manuel Garcia "Petioto", during the time that ownership of the property was being disputed in court. During Wednesday's invasion attempt, police were involved, and a fisherman complained that pressure from the handcuffs injured his wrists. He said the owner of the property had allowed them to enter nine years ago.

Signs have been posted by the federal agency CONANP (National Commission of Protected Natural Areas) advising the fishing cooperatives to refrain from capturing sharks that are tagged. The signs say, "If you see a tag like this on any shark that you capture, please release it and report it to 998 183 2505 and 998 195 2108".
Due to declining shark populations in the oceans, the organization "Saving Our Sharks" is collaborating with the Mexican government on an investigation of the species, and have placed 16 centimeter devices on sharks to learn about their migrations.
The Baptist church, located on south Hidalgo, will hold a "Vacation Bible School" for children ages 4-12 on June 28 & 29 from 4-7pm and on Sunday until 10pm.

In June, fishermen in this region are banned from catching Lobster, Octopus, Shrimp, Conch & Shark Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available, along with frozen tails. LINK
The baseball games at the El Pescador stadium in front of Chedraui are usually held on Sundays, starting around 1p, when there's a 'home' game. .

Turtle nesting season continues throughout June. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres; Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but the sand usually isn't deep enough. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.

Whale shark tour season continues throughout June, ending in mid-September.
Saturday June 1 & Sunday June 2: "Dry Law" is in effect for 48 hours, from the first minute on Saturday (00:00, just after Friday midnight) until midnight on Sunday (24:00) when "To Go" (package) sales of alcohol is prohibited. Foreigners in tourism areas, such as Isla Mujeres, may purchase alcoholic beverages, with food, at bars & restaurants. Citizens can't buy alcohol & businesses such as convenience stores cannot sell it.

Saturday, June 1st Dia de la Marina. Events begin with a 5 kilometer race in men's and women's divisions, and another for teens and children, starting in front of Playa Centro at 7am and 8am, with more than 17,000 pesos in cash prizes. Limited to 150 runners in the 5k, and 150 in the youth and children's event.
The official ceremony for National Dia de la Marina will take place at 11am, with a procession of boats in the Bay and placing of a wreath.
On Playa Centro, a beach soccer tournament will start at 11am, with teams of eight people and prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos. It will be followed by a beach volleyball tournament at 1pm with teams of two men & two women competing for prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos.The festivities will come to a close at 2p, with a Palo Encebado contest.
