The monument to the Niños Héroes de Chapultepec is gone, and the comments say it's being relocated for safety reasons. It honors six teenage cadets of the Heroico Colegio Militar, and two from the Heroica Escuela Naval Militar, the former died when the United States occupied Mexico City in 1847 and the latter in defense of the port of Veracruz in 1914. They are commemorated every September 13th.
The occupation of Mexico City is referred to at the start of the US Marine Corps hymn: "From the halls of Montezuma". The Mexican-American war ended four and a half months later with the Treaty of Hidalgo, when the US gained the present-day states of California, Nevada, and Utah, most of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming.

La Tertulia
The City of Isla Mujeres has approved the bidding requirements for Urban Transport and sent them to the State Congress to announce a call for companies to bid on providing this badly needed service, and results are expected within a month, according to Mayor Juan Carrillo. The island has been without bus service for five years, although, from the beginning in 2001, the Turican company who held the concession did not comply with the terms of the agreement.. At that time, they contracted to provide 500 vehicles to serve the Continental Zone, but didn't comply. (They also didn't provide the number of vehicles specified in the agreement for the island.)
The Mayor explained in a press conference that the bidding rules were approved a few days ago, and the proposal will soon be presented to the State Congress, so that the people of Isla Mujeres will be able to count on having this important service. (photo of former bus, being pushed)

Increased surveillance at ferry terminals
Refuerzan vigilancia
Before the start of the Easter holiday period, there has been increased surveillance at the two maritime terminals operated by APIQRoo, state port authority, by the personnel of the Navy and Federal police. Officials with APIQRoo said during the holiday season there will be more than 20,000 passengers using the terminals daily, but currently the number is about half that.During these reviews, the dogs chose people at random, for a quick review of their person and their belongings, including residents of Isla Mujeres, and visitors of both foreign and Mexican nationality. APIQRoo had already announced plans to increase security at its terminal, including incorporation of federal personnel and considered installing weapon detection equipment that passengers would walk through.
Users of the terminal responded well to the surveillance, and cooperated with authorities who carried out their crime prevention work.
Demolition work at the Obelisk to los Niños Héroes
Demuelen obelisco a los Niños Héroes
The demolition work was carried out by Naval personnel, with support from the Traffic Police and Civil Protection personnel to avoid any complications. For more than a half century, the obelisk has commemorated the heroes who died defending the Castle of Chapultepec during the invasion of the American troops in 1847 and the defense of the Port of Veracruz in 1914.There have been some traffic accidents at the obelisk, which invaded the road for several centimeters on each side, and there have been requests to move it to a less dangerous location. A source with the Navy said no other monument is planned for that location, and this one was removed due to the risk of traffic accidents. Another monument will be placed there which is much smaller and located at the side of the road in front of the Bay, and was inaugurated a few years ago.

Good anti-erosion results from palisades
Palizadas dan buenos resultados
There have been good anti-erosion results from palisades on North Beach, with plants acting to brake the strong winds from the north, especially on the east side where there is erosion where there are no palisades. For a stretch of 50 meters, near the base of the Mia pier, there is an area with no sand. At high tide when the moon is full, the water invades this rocky area. Palm trees have fallen due to erosion, but hotel staff have created a large palisade that has helped save the rest of the beach, forming a dune where bushes have grown.Hotel staff are trained to place sargassum on the palisades, so that they continue to increase in size and help brake the high winds and high tides that occur with hurricanes, providing a natural defense.
Cabbies will comply with Mobility Law
Taxistas se apegarán a la Ley de Movilidad
According to the state Mobility Law, any taxi driver who is dismissed for an irregularity cannot be hired by another union within the state. The delegate for the Northern Zone of the Mobility Institute, Vivian Castillo, met with the leaders of the taxi drivers union of Isla Mujeres, and with representatives of the Golf Cart rental agency association, to discuss implementation of the MObility Law and the corresponding regulations. She said this law should solve several problems in the transportation sector, so that if taxistas are discharged for bad behavior, they cannot be hired by another union. She also discussed a topic that is not popular with the taxi concession holders, in regard to the endorsement payment they must make, and she met with the union leader to explain that the law will be applied equally. These payments are made at the Revenue Collection office in Isla Mujeres.
Other requirements are the vehicles must have current insurance, be manufactured in 2014 or newer, and have air bags.
Residence built in Federal Zone
Familia construye en Zona Federal
A petition is being organized to request intervention from PROFEPA (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection) regarding a section of the Federal Zone that has been partially obstructed for about a decade by an extension on a private home. Now the family is adding a second story. It is located at the southern end of the Eastern malecon, where the last 200 meters must be accessed via stairs and a narrow passageway. Information is given about making a complaint.
