Raising awareness about not using sunscreen while swimming
Sensibilizan a no usar protector solar en nado
More than 100 tour guides of Isla Mujeres were trained last fall about the need for tourists to refrain from using sunscreens before they go into the water, in response to the coral disease that has been a problem since last summer. This is part of an effort that includes the tour guides and nautical tour cooperatives of Cancun by personnel with SEMARNAT the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, and it is taking place in other state parks.
This is in response to problems among various types of coral, especially brain coral. This is a global problem that initially appeared in the Great Barrier Reef of Australia and then near Florida, in the US. Last summer it was detected in the corals of Puerto Morales, and now it seems to have invaded the entire MesoAmerican reef system, according to specialists of UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico). They are conducting research to try to contain the problem, in coordination with CONANP, he National Commission of Protected Areas.
The tour guides said they have gotten a good response from clients who are notified in a timely manner to refrain from using sunscreen because of the amount of damage it causes to the corals and the ecosystem, but there are some visitors who have already applied sunscreen before entering the boat.
Staff with CONANP and DGVS (Department of Wildlife) have been conducting awareness workshops at all the coastal areas of Quintana Roo where there are national parks. The Director of Contoy National Park, Dr. Maria del Carmen Garcia Rivas, who is also responsible for Puerto Morales National Park, is an activist on this issue and conducting research in coordination with scientists at UNAM. Others involved in the research included scientists with CICY, Ecosur, Icml UNAM, SEMA, Colpos, CIIDES and CEA. They are also addressing the issued of sargasso and a possible link between the two problems.
She said that oxybenzone, octyl salicylate and octinoxate are organic compounds that disrupt the endocrine system of some fish and produce coral bleaching. Some fish such as the sergeant, zebra, Japanese medaka, bighead carp and rainbow trout present endocrine alterations and oxidative stress when exposed to high concentrations of organic UV blockers. The fish's body confuses these compounds with estrogen, causing altered cell function.`

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

On the first Monday of each month, there is usually a civic ceremony in the morning, often on the Town Square.
Fishermen in this region are banned from catching Lobster, Grouper and Octopus in March. Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available, along with frozen tails. LINK

The parades are Sunday & Monday at 3p from the Naval Base to the Monument to the Fishermen, so Rueda Medina will be closed. Although the map doesn't show it, traffic is usually detoured down Juarez & the section of Hidalgo that is south of the Square (which usually affects where parking is allowed on Juarez, temporarily.)
It says...Due to celebrations for Carnaval 2019 in Isla Mujeres, March 1-5, there will partial, temporary road closures for the performances of the dance troupes.
On March 3 & 4, Rueda Medina will be closed during the parade. Please plan ahead, and thank you for your understanding.

On or around March 4th, there is usually a ceremony commemorating the arrival of Francisco Hernandez Cordoba in 1517, who is credited with discovering the Yucatan and what is now Mexico, after landing on Isla Mujeres. The expedition of 110 men and 3 boats sailed from Cuba and and sailed around the coast, battling with the Maya, until all but one were injured, and over 50 had died.
