After the recent robbery in Isla Mujeres, entrepreneurs plan to propose that security filters be implemented at each of the Maritime Terminals, which could be manned by the Navy or the Military Police LINK
They said that although there are security cameras, they want a metal detector for weapons, and they noted that the arrival of troops in the Ciudad Militar/Military City in the Isla Mujeres Continental Zone (on the mainland part of the municipality), this opens up the possibility of having more security and greater control about what enters and exits the island. It is noted that the recent armed robbery took place just 200 meters from the previous robbery, and there have been no arrests. More businesses are seriously considering the installation of security cameras, noting that although these cannot prevent theft, they can help in the recognition of the criminals.
Entrepreneurs support the new administration LINK
They say they feel confident that good actions will continue. They reaffirmed their support a few days before swearing in of the new members of the administration and said they saw good results during the 2016-2018 term. The head of the CROC union, Roman Masdonado, said, "We are completely confident that this administration will fulfill each of its commitments in terms of safety, employment, tourism and that the benefits will continue in all corners of the municipality." Businessmen Gerardo Magana and Miguel Angel Morgan spoke about their satisfaction with the Mayor and what has been done in the past two years, and their good expectations for the future under this Mayor (who was reelected in July).

5 Kilometer race on Saturday

A five kilometer race will take place on Saturday, when about 100 people are expected to participate. The event will begin at 7am by the Rueda Medina lighthouse, traveling south on that street, then entering the airfield, and running its entire distance of 1.3 kilometers and then back to the starting point. It is sponsored by the CROC labor union and is part of their national health campaign, with races also happening at other locations around Mexico, including Mexico City. There are no fees.It is noted that the labor union has been offering medical consultations at its office on Saturdays, which usually attract about 10 to 15 people, and are open to the general public, including men, women, and children. The union has a health program in coordination with the Family Medicine Unit (UMF), which has provided benefits to hundreds of workers, and they also have programs for accident prevention in the workplace.
Parents want more security at the Middle School
Sixteen closed circuit cameras were recently installed inside the middle school, Benito Juarez, in coordination with requests from parents. There is a plan by the parents association to raise the level of the perimeter fence, which has been discussed with the teachers and administration, and they will seek public or private funding, in addition to the voluntary contributions of the parents. The fence consists of over 600 meters, and there are many sections that need to be raised between a half meter and a meter and a half higher.
Currently a electric substation is being installed to ensure there are no variations in the electrical supply, which were occurring with the outdated system. The 60th anniversary of the school is about to be celebrated, which will begin on Sunday, Oct. 7 and conclude on Thursday, Oct. 11. The fence project won't begin until this event is over. The English language computer lab area is being renovated and will be inaugurated after the festivities, where foreign volunteers are providing assistance, as they have in recent years in the primary schools. The school director also mentioned the support of the municipal government in removing the scrap that was left from those renovations.
Soccer Club Tiburoneros is ready to represent Isla Mujeres
The competition begins on October 17 for the upcoming season, and Isla Mujeres has three soccer teams, who will compete in the fourth division, the fifth division, and the U17 categories. The preparation games will take place this weekend, with two on Saturday in Bonfil, and the U17 game is on Sunday against the Atlante Cancun team.
There are also teams for younger children and spaces available.
Installing artificial turf on the soccer field
Installation of the artificial turf on the soccer field is about sixty percent complete, and should be finished in about two weeks. It was expected to be completed by the end of June, but the wrong material was sent, which wasn't adequately thick, which caused delays, which resulted in postponements of competitions.

Isla Mujeres will be represented at two important tourist fairs in October, the Cancun Travel Mart and the Pueblo Magicos Fair. The 31st edition of the Cancun Travel Mart will take place Oct. 8-11, which is focused on Tour operators and wholesale agencies, who are interested in technical information such as types of services available, the number of hotels and their characteristics and capacity, and information about the bars, restaurants, and general tourist attractions.
The fifth edition of the Pueblo Magicos Fair will take place in Michoacan Oct. 11-14, and is an opportunity to let the public know about the benefits and advantages of Isla Mujeres, directly. At the last two fairs, held in Queretaro and Monterrey, there were an average of 90,000 attendees. Isla Mujeres will have an opportunity to publicize its cuisine, crafts, and culture, offering samples of typical dishes of the island.
Boaters must comply with the Navigation Law
The Isla Mujeres Harbor Master, Ana Laura López Bautista, said that her office is very serious about matters of maritime safety and protection of human lives at sea, and every one of the boats, both tourist boats and fishing boats, must have their current maritime safety certificate and comply with the safety measures required by the Law of Navigation.
She spoke about the requirements concerning life jackets for boats that are practicing cabotage navigation, or going out 12 nautical miles from the coast, which includes the whale shark licensees. She said the vests they have been using don't comply with the requirements of the law and they are not certified to provide safety at sea. She is inviting members of the nautical industry to come to the Harbor Master's office to analyze each individual case. She said the vests that are currently used are not safe in case of accident because they do not adopt the right position for those who use them; that is, if they become unconscious the body of the person can be face down and they can drown.
The vests required by the Navigation Law have the characteristic that the body is always with its head back, out of the water, and they feature reflective tape, lighting and a whistle. She explained that due to their characteristics, they are not suitable for snorkeling or swimming with the whale shark, so the recommendation is to wear survival vests during the trip and, at the time of sighting, change into the normal ones.
She clarified that these vests are only required for vessels practicing cabotage navigation (12 nautical miles at sea), while boats that carry out activities exclusively in the Bay can continue using the traditional ones.
Town Hall lit in pink
The information in the first part of this article has already been translated. The second half says that two Israeli tourists visited the Tourism Department offices to report the alleged theft of a GoPro camera and some cash, which they had left unattended while they went swimming in the sea. The Tourism Promotions Director, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco turned their report over to the appropriate agency and he noted this is the first complaint in the new month of October. He said there were eight reports in September, all of them concerning losses of cell phones, bags, and cameras.
Regarding the Israelis, he acknowledged that it is not the first time that tourists come to complain of having been victims of a robbery while they went swimming or after they carelessly left their belongings in a golf cart and walked away from the vehicle, leaving it out of their sight.
He said their are more complaints of loss of objects than there are of theft, and out of ten cases of lost items, about seven are found by other tourists or by local people, and brought to the Tourism office on Rueda Medina, where they are returned to their owners.
Concerns about cliff erosion & potential risk in a hurricane
There are concerns that the cliffs between colonia Amplificacion la Gloria and the FOVISSSTE apartment buildings could suffer landslides in the event of a hurricane, which occurred with hurricane "Wilma" in 2005. It is noted that the powerful hurricane "GIlberto" changed the face of Isla Mujeres, causing a considerable portion of Punta Sur to disappear, including vestiges of the shrine to Ixchel.
There has been erosion along this section, some of which is attributed to the construction of the Isla 33 condo development, and to a lesser degree the construction of a walking path, causing rocks to detach and roll to the beach, as well as the formation of "caves" that weaken the foundation of the sidewalk, walking path, and even the road.

A broad low pressure area centered near the northeastern coasts of Nicaragua and Honduras is producing an extensive area of disorganized clouds and thunderstorms over the central and western Caribbean Sea, as well as portions of Central America. While surface pressures are relatively low in the area, upper-level winds are currently not favorable for tropical cyclone formation.
Environmental conditions could become less hostile by late this weekend or early next week, and a tropical depression could form as the system moves slowly northwestward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea and the southern Gulf of Mexico.

At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico. Try some seasonal Pibi Pollo tamales & Pan de los Muertos pastry.
There is usually a silent procession from the Cemetery down Hidalgo, ending at the Casa de la Cultura, where there are usually altars representing various regions of Mexico, and a Catrina contest. Most of the participants in the procession are in catrina makeup or wearing regional clothing, and the rest are in white, and they carry candles.
Efforts are made to not let the Halloween overshadow the Mexican celebrations and traditions, and there are usually altar contests and/or exhibitions in the schools. There have also been competitions on the Town Square, and altars can be seen in various businesses, at the Town Hall and they are present in many homes.
