In the predawn hours on Thursday, two customers at the gasoline station on the Caribbean coastal road refused to pay and stole the coins, as well as beating the employee and taking his money. This took place about an hour after the young man lost his life in a motorcycle accident nearby, according to the gas station employee who was on duty, Josue N. He explained that it was about 2am and the road was closed as a result of the accident, which was about 300 meters away (by the old Cablemas office), where police were responding to that emergency.
He said that two people arrived at the gas station on a motorcycle, appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and after requesting fuel for the vehicle, they demanded money. The attendant refused, and they began hitting him, but luckily, the young man was able to escape, and ran up the road to tell the police at the accident scene. However, when the police arrived at the gas station, the thieves had already escaped with the cash.
They took the coins that are kept atop the gas pump, which was estimated to be about 1300 pesos. The prosecutor's office began an investigation (file 250/2018), and said that it is possible that the thieves have already been identified. LINK

"Isla Blanca" vehicle ferry continues to have problems
El “Isla Blanca” sigue con problemas [+] Ver masFull article at this link
August 31 The "Isla Blanca" ferry had a mechanical problem again, but this time the delay shorter, before the the first departure of the day took place a little after 7am. This delay was only about two hours, while the previous delay lasted about 11 hours. On that evening, the "Ultracarga III" made three crossings, and as of Wednesday, it had made six round trips, with a schedule that will be valid until Sunday. On Monday, the number of daily round trips may be reduced to five, and the Ultramar company should have ticket offices established at both terminals this week.
The "Isla Blanca" ferry is due for preventative maintenance, which it received a year ago, which replacing one of its engines with a new one. It is scheduled to return to Ciudad del Carmen in Campeche, when the "Sergio Gracia" returns from there when its maintenance work is completed, which is expected to occur this month.
Fishing industry has big expectations
Grandes expectativas en el sector pesquero.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
According to Policarpo Pastrana, the members of the fishing industry have big expectations for support from the administration of the President-elect of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, of the AMLO party. They expect federal support for renewal of their fishing gear, including
outboard engines, boats, nets, traps and other equipment, as well as improvements for their infrastructure such as docks and their collection centers. They also hope for reactivation of projects for the farming of fish, such as tilapia and cobia, on the mainland and the island, respectively.
Sargasso at eastern beaches not affecting turtle nesting
Sargazo invade áreas de anidación de tortugas+] Ver mas
Although there is accumulated sargasso at the ten beaches of the island where turtles nest, this has not impacted their nesting according to Deline Garcia who is in charge of the protection program of the Tortugranja (and its Director). She said the least affected area is Playa Hangar, where the most eggs are usually collected.
Because of its geographical position, most of the mats of sargasso pass by, but large amounts have arrived to the eastern coast, where you can also evidence of the nesting activity of the turtles. She said the affectation is "slight", and that some cleaning has been done by the volunteers and personnel who monitor the beaches nightly, but it would take many volunteers to remove the amount of sargasso that has accumulated along the eastern coast in recent weeks.
The reproduction cycle of the "Green" turtles will end in mid-October, who lay the most eggs of the three species who nest on Isla Mujeres. From May to the night of August 31st, there have been a total of 38,714 eggs collected at the Tortugranja, of the species Loggerhead, Green, and Hawksbill. The last time a Leatherback turtle laid eggs on the island was in 2008, but the 40 eggs did not hatch. There has been about one nesting attempt seen yearly, but perhaps because of her large size, she doesn't find sand that is deep enough for laying.
As of last night, there have been 336 nests rescued, and that number is expected to reach 500 nests by the end of the season. So far this season, 246 Green turtle nests were rescued containing 29,246 eggs. There have been 10 Hawksbill nests so far, with 1646 eggs, compared to last year when only four were rescued. For the Loggerheads, there have been 80 nests rescued, with 9002 eggs, compared to 2017, when only 24 Loggerhead nests were rescued, of a total of 1170 nests. (Therefore, if 28 nests were Hawksbills & Loggerheads last year, the other 1142 protected nests were Greens. It is usual for "bumper" years to be followed by slower years.)
