Concern over the rock cages below the hurricane wall

The rock cages (gabions) that provide protection for the hurricane wall downtown have suffered from deterioration and erosion. They were built less than a decade ago, and were expected to have a useful life of at least 20 years.
Beaches at the mercy of erosion

Businesses who own concessions in the Federal Zone of Playa Norte have been using wooden structures to protect the beaches from erosion, especially since the dozen geotubes that were installed in 2007 have deteriorated. These breakwaters have produced good results, and sand has been regained. The geotubes and other structures were installed in response to the loss of sand caused by Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
Playa Centro has gained a large amount of sand in the past two years, to the point where the increase in sand was affecting the Navigation Channel, which is just past the buoy line.
Cutting of mangrove plants at Maritime Terminal parking lot provokes controversy

There were some mangrove plants cut at the bay side of the parking lot by the Maritime Terminal. Two bushes were pruned and others were cut from the base. There is no construction work planned for this area. This goes against the trend to plant native plants, and mangroves are in danger of extinction. A bystander said, "In reality, that bush didn't not affect any of the vehicles parked in the lot, all the green area should be conserved."
At first, it was thought that this could indicated that work might begin soon to expand the terminal. However that work will not take place in this area, and will only occupy one third of the parking lot. It is planed to occupy part of the the Naval property, located at the southern side of the building, according to a plan released by APIQROO, the port authority.
Independence celebrations without incident

The Independence Day celebrations concluded with a "Saldo Blanco" (no serious incidents). There were no traffic accidents and just some arrests for excessive drunkenness, (por estar “pasado de copa”) with the dance for the Grito de Dolores on the Town Square that ended at dawn on Sunday and was attended by thousands of residents and tourists. There were 120 police officers participating in the security operation.
In the past two years of the Mayor's administration, the number of municipal police officers has tripled and due to the implementation of the Recruitment and Personnel Selection Program, who have been screened, trained and evaluated by the State Center of Control and Trust. (El Centro Estatal de Control y Confianza). The Mayor said one of his most important achievements has been participation in the program of FORTASEG, Strengthening for Security,which provided 12 million pesos in federal funds for vehicles and motorcycles for patrolling, as well as uniforms and salary increases.

No increase in taxi rates

The state government is not authorizing rate increases for taxi drivers in Quintana Roo in 2018, which includes the Isla Mujeres union. The union leader, José Magaña Galué, said The state government had no plans to authorize and adjustment to the rates without prior analysis and authorization.
Analysis is planned for 2019, and therefore, no increases will be approved during this fiscal year. He said the need for an increase is not as urgent on the island as it is in the Continental Zone.

It was nice weather, and still is. Today, Monday, it's hot & sunny with calm seas. Many tourists visited the isle to enjoy the Independence Day weekend, with many renting golf carts, visiting the beach, going diving or taking trips to Isla Contoy. The lancheros offering tours to El Farito and such were only operating at about 30 percent, because they have competition from the Puerto Juarez lancheros, whose services are more attractive because their clients don't have to pay the rather expensive ferry fares.

Police detain "Rex" at Playa Norte

At an early hour on Saturday, police arrested a person who frequents Playa Norte and apparently even sleeps there, for allegations of misdemeanor crimes, according to the Police Chief, Jaime Ongay. It is presumed that he was the one responsible for the theft of belongings of a Chinese tourist who was left "en pelotas" on Thursday at 6am. (While the tourist was skinny dipping at dawn, his bag was stolen from the beach, which contained his clothing and the keys to his rental car. Pelotas means balls.)
However, there has been no formal complaint made for that or other events that he has been accused of, and if none is filed, he can only be held 36 hours and would be released by the judge on Sunday at 6pm, since he was arrested Saturday at 6am.
There have been complaints to the Tourism office and on social media recently from visitors, especially women, that they have been harassed by a tattooed man named "Rex" at Playa Norte, and warning others about how he approaches women.
When he was arrested, "Rex" was coated in sand, and it is said that he has already served some years in jail for serious crimes, but it is presumed he has not been rehabilitated from his addiction which causes him to beg from foreigners, and results in discomfort and fearfulness. There are concerns among business owners, but no one has filed any formal complaints.

Today the NHC has reduced the chances from 20% to 10% of the remnants of Issac developing, with conditions becoming even less conductive to redevelopment as the system moves toward the Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday. Rain is expected over Hispanola, Jamaica and eastern Cuba for the next couple days as the system moves west-northwest across the northwestern Caribbean.

A broad area of low pressure associated with remnants of Issac is expected to cause heavy rains and gusty winds across portions of Hispaniola, Jamaica, and eastern Cuba, with the possibility of it undergoing some slow development over the next day or so as it moves north-northwestward toward the northwestern Caribbean Sea. Afterward, environmental conditions become less conducive and re-development appears unlikely.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

It's whale shark tour season (thru mid September) and turtle nesting season (thru mid October). September is the Mes de la Patria/patriotic month, celebrating Mexico's independence from Spain
Saturday, Sept. 1 Boat procession to Isla Contoy taking the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre to the chapel at the Fishermen's camp there departing from the concrete pier at 8am after the Mass at 7am and the procession from the Church of Immaculate Conception. 19th annual edition.
Saturday, Sept. 1 Weekly plogging event to clean up litter, meeting at the park "Hormiguitas Oberas", to continue cleaning at Salina Grande lake 8a-10a.
Sunday, Sept. 2 RESCATE skating event on the hill by Julio Saury grade school 10a-3p, followed by a drone video then a BBQ at the RESCATE site in Sac Bajo, at the old Cristalmar hotel next to Playa Tiburon, with a raffle for youth, live music, and circus performers until 8p.

Grito at 11p, fireworks, then live band & partying all night long.

Monday, Sept. 17 End of the Whale Shark tour season. The licensees and their families usually have a celebration on the weekend after it closes and a Mass to express their gratitude.
Wednesday, Sept. 19 The Mayor's second municipal Report will be given on Sept. 19th at 4pm on the Town Square, according to the caption with this graphic, which says the City Council will have a special session at 4:30 on the Town Square.
Wednesday, Sept. 19 There will be a national earthquake simulation, preceded by a moment of silence for the victims of the 2017 earthquake, and afterwards you are invited to raise your right fist as a symbol of unity and brotherhood among the people of Mexico
