Whale shark tour operators join in protest against Cubans LINK
Fishermen are planning to stage a protest against Cuban fishermen catching Bonito, and some whale shark tour operators are expected to join, so there may be 15 boats participating. It will take place 12 nautical miles from Isla Mujeres where about ten Cuban fishing boats are located. The Isla Mujeres fishermen say this is not a new problem and that the Cubans are fishing in Mexican waters, as well as causing problems for whale shark tour operators. They want authorities to be aware of this problem and to intervene.
The leader of the fishing cooperative Patria y Progreso said that for many years they have been noticing the presence of the Cuban fishing fleet, but these have been approaching little by little, until reaching about 12 nautical miles from Isla Mujeres.

Islanders want the appropriate authorities to take action regarding merchants who have invaded the sidewalks with their merchandise and now are invading the street with umbrellas. (Photos). There is a comment and photos from a representative of the Tourism Department that the umbrellas have been removed.
Juan Carrillo resumed his duties as Municipal President now that the election period is over, as have City Council members Diego González Aguilar and Elsy Georgina Rivero Arjona.

The Department of the Navy (SEMAR), as the maritime authority, has not authorized the transport of tourists from Punta Sam on the two ferries of the company Marítima Isla Mujeres, because all the security requirements that were required last March have not been met. SEMAR enforced measures to comply with the regulations, for example, renewal of all the life jackets for the passengers, which had not been done. But these safety requirements, among others, had not been met since last year when the revised Maritime Navigation and Commerce Law went into effect in June 2017.
Since the Easter holidays in March, the transfer of tourists has been prohibited, and only vehicles and their drivers are permitted, which affects the company's income, as well as inconveniencing hundreds of hotel guests staying in the area of Punta Sam and Isla Blanca, who now must travel to Puerto Juarez to cross over to the island.
At the Maritima website, the following notice is posted: "By provision of the National Maritime Authority, our trips will only be for the transport of cargo (vehicles) and the driver, until further notice. We apologize for the inconvenience this provision is causing. Thanks for all the support. Our staff and the company are grateful."
The "Isla Blanca" and "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" boats have the capacity to transport about 200 and 300 tourists, respectively, at a time. Once they comply with the requirements of the authorities, the transfer of tourists will be authorized again, with favorable fares which are 50 percent less than the ferries who travel between Puerto Juarez and the island.
The 40-minute trip from Punta Sam is popular with Mexican families, who are affected by this delay in resuming service. However, the Ultramar company is ready to put its ferry "Ultracarga III" into service with a capacity of about 300 passengers and 60 compact vehicles. It is necessary that the berth of the terminal be adapted, which could happen by the end of summer or early fall, at the latest, according to some executives with the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (APIQRoo).

Increasing numbers of tourists are visiting the island during this summer vacation period, and about 80 percent of the830 golf carts are rented. There is less congestion at Maritime terminal since the store has been removed, and two other ferry companies have joined in transporting passengers. Occupancy rates are about 80 percent among the larger hotels, especially in the Continental Zone, and about 70 percent among the smaller hotels.
The three levels of government are conducting coordinated security operations. Civil Protection is maintaining an ongoing surveillance at Playa Centro, North Beach, Medina Luna Beach and Isla Blanca Beach; with the military of the Department of the Navy and the Tourist Police, among other security forces.
Many tourists are visiting Isla Contoy National Park, whose daily capacity is set at 200 visitors.
Concerns about tourism center palapa

There are concerns that the Tourism Center palapa at the Mundaca Hacienda would be unable to survive a hurricane that is Category 2 or stronger, with winds of 200 km or stronger. The Mundaca palapa was built in 2009 and it was renovated a year ago. It was temporary closed down for a few weeks after the palapa at Las Iguanas Park fell, only five years after it was built. At that time, Civil Protection evaluated it and it was reopened.
It is noted that the collapse of the Las Iguanas Park palapa occurred at the beginning of this administration and was blamed on a lack of preventative maintenance, and that a section of the downtown Cemetery wall also collapsed, which was attributed to the same cause. With the Mundaca Hacienda palapa, there are concerns that it wasn't correctly constructed when it was built.
This palapa is used by hundreds of tourists daily,and bicyclists taking a rest, as well as by resident families in the mornings and evenings. About 15 million pesos in federal funds were spent on the fence enclosing the Mundaca Hacienda property and construction of the palapa.

The 50th anniversary will take place at the end of the year during the celebration for the Virgin of Immaculate Conception, from November 29th to December 8th. Among the special guests will be islander Fabio Martínez Castilla, who is Bishop of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
The celebration of 50 years since the construction of the house of God coincides with the jubilee year of the Cancun-Chetumal Prelature; there will be conferences and concerts at the Town Square, and they are expecting more than 2000 people to attend.
Father Raúl Sánchez Alonso said that the Bishop of Quintana Roo, Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, will be heading a maritime procession from Punta Sam, the same as last year.Father Raul estimated that some 3500 believers from the region will attend the Eucharistic Congress.
Last year was the celebration of the arrival of the Catholic faith, when the Spaniard Francisco Hernández de Córdoba visited the Yucatan Peninsula,in the first part of the year 1517.

Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
