With lectures on marine life, musical shows and lots of fun, this weekend we celebrate the 11th Whale Shark festival in Isla Mujeres. There is a graphic for Sunday evening's events (see events section below).
The beaches of Isla Mujeres are clean, free of sargasso seaweed and ready to receive the more than 15,000 visitors who come to our Pueblo Magico..

The Whale Shark Festival was a success
The 11th annual Whale Shark Festival was a success, with exhibitions, conferences, and recreational and cultural activities in which dozens of people participated. This festival, which has become a tradition on the island, seeks to create greater awareness among its inhabitants of the importance of caring for this species and its environment, because doing so contributes to keeping them returning year after year, between May and August. (Whale shark season officially ends in mid September.)
Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco, Director of Tourism Promotion of Isla Mujeres, explained that the arrival of these large sharks contributes to the economy of our municipality, which depends on tourism, since we receive visitors from around the world every year, who come to admire the whale sharks.
He said it is important to be aware about preserving the habitat of this species, and the Whale Shark Festival is an initiative that brings together experts in marine life, conservationists, artists and science disseminators to promote a culture of conservation and an understanding of the migration, reproduction and feeding habits of these big fish, as well as acquiring best practices for their preservation.
The 11th Whale Shark Festival was held from Friday, July 20 to Sunday the 22nd, with various activities on the Town Square.

Navy assisted two people in a sailboat lacking propulsion
The Department of the Navy of Mexico as the National Maritime Authority, acting as Coast Guard, reported that yesterday, personnel assigned to the Fifth Naval Region, based in Isla Mujeres, provided support to a sailboat that was left without propulsion, in the vicinity of the island, with two crew members on board.
This action was carried out, after receiving a call from the Harbor Master of Puerto Juarez, who reported that the "Century Emeral", with a Panamanian flag, was towing the sailboat "Minstrel", with an American flag, towards Isla Mujeres.
Therefore, the departure of an MLB-class vessel was immediately ordered to intercept the boats, who found them approximately 33 nautical miles (53 km) northeast of Isla Mujeres, and proceeded to continue towing the sailboat to a safe harbor. When arriving at the dock of this Naval Region, the two crew members were assessed of by Naval Health personnel, who found them to be in good health and subsequently they left by their own means.
With these actions, the Department of the Navy of Mexico as a National Maritime Authority, reiterates its commitment to the citizenry to safeguard human life at sea.

On Sunday, the beaches were busy, and there were no incidents, except around 4pm a child had a minor accident when slipping from a 'whale' on North Beach, and required medical attention to examine a wound on his right shin, according to witnesses. (The whales are also called geotubes and are plastic covered extensions in the water designed to prevent beach erosion.). Por Esto says the foreign family was imprudent to let the child try climbing on this infrastructure, which are slippery with 'moss'.
The more than 800 golf carts were rented, and there was a lack of taxis at peak hours, such as noon. The Traffic police advised the rental agencies to instruct their customers not to allow minors to drive, which was detected recently. Security forces of the municipality and the Navy were performing patrols and providing safety, in coordination with the Harbor Master's office, the Red Cross, and other governmental agencies.
Conferences continue against human trafficking

Throughout this month, the City, the the DIF social service agency, has been providing a program of classes to raise awareness about human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The classes are being offered to City employees and officials, with a different class weekly, at the CAVI (Victim Assistance Center) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
A third of the victims of this crime are children.and 70 percent are women and girls, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. "Human trafficking consists of transferring and retaining a person by force in order to exploit them, not only for work or sexual purposes, but also for begging or even for organ trafficking or forced marriages. With this program, we want all city officials to have the tools to know how to act in case of recognizing a victim, "said Hilda Gómez, general director of DIF.
Small hotels want to be noticed

With imminent arrival of the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) to the state of Quintana Roo, the owners of small hotels in Isla Mujeres, hope benefits will be provided for their sector, which they say has lower occupancy rates than the larger hotels.
They says their occupancy rates are less than 30 percent during this summer holiday season, while in previous years they had been full of guests. They want better promotion from this administration, noting more than 10 million pesos are paid annually in Isla Mujeres for the Lodging Tax of 3 percent, which they expect to be used for promotion of this destination. Under Governor Borge, responsibility for promotion of the island was transferred to the Cancun Convention Center and Visitors Bureau. (Previously, Isla Mujeres had its own municipal promotional agency for tourism.)
Gerardo Magaña, vice president of the Association of Small Hotels Fascinantes of Isla Mujeres, agrees with the transfer of SECTUR in Quintana Roo, hoping that it is in Cancun for practical purposes and not Chetumal. They believe that Miguel Torruco Marqués, proposed as the head of the SECTUR, should understand the problem, especially because he is aware of the matter in a national context, since he is part of the industry.
Poor cable service continues

On Sunday morning, hundreds of cable customers in the southern part of the island found themselves without service. A complaint was filed months ago by dozens of customers of Cablemas/Izzi with several federal agencies, including the consumer protection agency PROFECO, about slow internet speeds and other problems. It is also noted that there are various places where the cables can be seen drooping, sometimes half a meter above the sidewalk, and there doesn't seem to be enough staff to provide preventative maintenance.
A "Saldo Blanco" (no serious incidents) continues during the holiday season, and security operations remain in force. There are no problems at the Maritime Terminals where many tourists are arriving in the morning and departing in the late afternoon, and there are often long lines at the taxi stand.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
