Ferry service is normalized in Isla Mujeres LINK

After complying with the new guidelines established by the Deputy General Directorate of Maritime Protection and Certification in charge of the Ports and Maritime Affairs Captaincies Unit (Unicapam), this Thursday, the Marítima Isla Mujeres company confirmed the operation of its ferry.
This ferry was removed from service for more than five months after some inconsistencies were detected in an inspection carried out by the maritime authorities.Since then, the ferry "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" was the only vehicle ferry in operation, although its passenger service was restricted.
Now that each of the observations by the authorities have been corrected, service has been resumed, including passenger service, It is noted that operations were interrupted for a few hours on Thursday during the changing of boats, and now the ferry "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" may be subject to improvements, always with the intention of ensuring the safety of customers.

Hoteliers say that Cancun sells the island as a place 'of passage', and for that reason travelers do not decide to spend at least one night in the place. "There are posters in the promotions that say Cancun and have the photo of beaches of Isla Mujeres," they said.

The City of Isla Mujeres extends an invitation to the Whale Shark Festival July 20-22
The festival will begin Friday, July 20 at 6:00 pm with a caravan to celebrate the arrival, this season, of the largest fish in the world. (See events section below).
Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco, director of Tourism Promotion of Isla Mujeres,
that during the festival there will be various activities designed for the whole family, so he offered an invitation to the general public to attend the events that will be held in the Town Square and surroundings.
"We dedicate this festival completely to the whale shark and it is a great opportunity to become aware of the importance of getting involved in its care, as we are fortunate that it arrives in the waters of Isla Mujeres year after year and it is our duty to protect it," he said.
Likewise, awareness of the preservation of the Mesoamerican Reef System is created, the second longest barrier reef in the world.

"Isla Blanca" ferry resumes operations

The :Isla Blanca" ferry of Maritima Isla Mujeres was suspended from service for four months by SEMAR (Department of the Navy), and that it resumed operations at ~2pm on Thursday, taking cargo from the island to Punta Sam. It removed from operation by the authorities during the last part of the Easter season, and the "Sergio Gracia" was prohibited from providing passenger service. This caused a great deal of annoyance among those who were inconvenienced and had to go from Punta Sam to Puerto Juarez after learning about this restriction.
The Maritima Isla Mujeres company has now met all the requirements of the Deputy General Directorate of Maritime Certification and Protection, of SEMAR, in accordance with the Law of Maritime Navigation and Commerce.
On Thursday, the "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" ferry had a problem at 11am at Punta Sam, and was out of service due to a mechanical failure.

July 19 A group of residents of the irregular colonia Guadalupana conducted a peaceful protest outside the office of a public notary in Cancun against lawyer Aarón Rojas, demanding he 'return their lots of the 208 people in the neighborhood. These families occupied the property in April 2005, and have been working toward regularization since that time.
The colonia has been recognized by the National Electoral Institute (INE) for their voter registration cards, and they have water contracts, as well as the CFE providing partial service. The families have been in possession of the lots, whose owner never appeared. (They went thru the legal procedures, and it is suspected that the original owner was a 'prestanombre', which doesn't have an exact translation into English but is like a proxy or alias or 'straw man'.)

At the height of summer season, the lancherso are only operating at about 50 percent of their fleet, according to Jose Marquez, one of the managers. The cooperative Adolfo Lopez Mateos is offering a 25% discount for their four hour tour of the Bay, with food.
They have 27 boats offering tours and they hope that this will attract more customers. It is a discount of 150 pesos, reducing the cost from 600 pesos to 450 pesos for a boat ride to the attractions, including snorkeling at the Underwater Museum, and food. Each boat has a capacity for 12 passengers, and his phone number is given, which is available 9a to 5p.
The tour boats face serious competition from boats in Puerto Juarez and from Cancun, including the catamarans and other recreational boats who offer all inclusive packages. The ferry companies also link their passengers up with some other companies. Some families find it most economical to hire a boat in Puerto Juarez to come and get to know the isle. The tours take their clients to eat in Sac Bajo or at Playa Tiburon, with grilled fish as the main feature of the menus.

In 2011, an agreement was signed between the Ultramar ferry company and the then Director of the state Port Authority, APIQRoo, allowing a monthly payment of 307,000 pesos in January to August and 153,000 from September to December, which is equivalent to 25 centavos per tourist in high season and 55 centavos in low season. Marinsa and Naveganto are paying 5 pesos per tourist. The Director of the Port Authority said she has already proceeded to cancel this contract with favors Ultramar.
On July 4th, Apiqroo's operating manager, Guillermo Rentería Zúñiga, had said that the controversial contract for use of the facilities of the Isla Mujeres maritime terminal "will not be canceled", and was expected to continue at this payment rate until it expired in 2021.
Based on the information published in Por Esto about the lack of maintenance to the ferry terminal due to a lack of money, the Director of APIQRoo, Alicia Ricalde Magana contacted the reporter to say, "I have already managed to cancel that contract and Ultramaria is already paying (...), but I also have juicio mercantil (?lit. mercantile judgment) to collect what was not paid.(over seven years)." Por Esto estimates this amount could be around 100 million pesos, since 5 million passengers were mobilized in 2017. (The Port Authority counts an arrival and a departure of one passenger as two mobilizations, and presumably the ferry companies pay a fee to APIQRoo for each ticket sold.)

Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
