Investigating damages to the Aguakan underwater line caused by a vessel
The damages didn't affect the tap water supply because the line is for use in cases of emergency of maintenance to the line that supplies Sac Bajo. LINK
The damage occurred at the underwater section that crosses the Canal of Puerto de Abrigo. The line is protected and at a necessary depth to allow the entry of large boats, but it is suspected that the anchor of some vessel could have caused the break in the water pipe. It is a six inch pipe and was broken at its deepest part, which suggests that an anchor caused the damage.
On Wednesday, April 15, the Harbor Master reported a "Saldo Blanco" (no incidents) as a result of strong effects from Cold Front #44, with the exception of the dragging (Garrio ; arrastre) of a sailboat as a consequence of the strong winds. There is no direct accusation that it was that particular sailboat, but there is a suspicion that it was responsible for the damage to the pipeline, which is only used in cases of emergency or maintenance to the main line. It is important to point out that this problem didn't affect the tap water supply.
Young fisherman died from decompression on Sunday evening LINK
The young man of 27 who died from decompression on Sunday evening lived in Puerto Juarez, but provided seafood for the Isla Blanca Cooperative. He was brought to the Community Hospital Emergency room at 3pm, but there is no Hyperbaric Chamber there, because it is still located downtown. They tried to stabilize him and it was after 5:30pm when he was transferred and put into the capsule. His friends from the Cooperative said he died around 8pm.
They lamented that there was not a doctor in Isla Mujeres to attend this type of emergency, since timely care was decisive in this case, and could have made the difference between live and death.
Members of the cooperative said that even when the lobster season is over, there are many fishermen who scuba dive with spear guns who are not necessarily catching lobster.

Opposing the North Beach bungalows

A group of six university students who comprise the board of the Committee in the Defense of the Environment of Isla Mujeres plan to visit the area where construction of 20 bungalows has been proposed near Playa Norte, to document sensitive issues of environmental and social impact. They plan to collect evidence and request an opinion of rejection from the nearby businesses. They want to support the process of obtaining an indirect injunction (amparo) from the Poder Judicial court to stop and definitively cancel the project.
The work was stopped a week ago after social pressure, but there are concerns that it could resume after the elections. The group also plans to address two other issues which are the accumulation of garbage at the Trash Transfer Facility and the issue of the lot which was sold at the overlook by Garrafon Park.
The members of this group are: : Julio Aldair Osorio Yam, president; Cuitlahuac Hernández Aguilar, general director; Alfredo Poot Andrade, deputy general director; Juan Manuel Valdez, social director; Amairany Vázquez Martínez, educational director; Julio César Osorio, legal director; Agapito Magaña López, Sports Director; and Ulises Ramos Ortiz, Director of agriculture, cattle ranching and fishing.
(The proposed site for the bungalows is off the pier at Yunque Islet where Mia is located, which is different from the bridge that connects the hotel to Isla Mujeres).
"Merlin" arrived first in the 50th edition of the Sol al Sol regatta

April 29 The boat "Merlin" cross the finish line at El Yunque at 7:59am, followed two hours later by Sgt. Reckless at 9:51 am, who then veered off out of concern for the deep draft of his boat, but those in charge advised the captain that the El Yunque canal is almost 7 meters deep, which is enough for the five meters of his keel. Both boats belong to the Spinnaker A category and are large vessels, with the latter being the largest of the four in the category at 75, 4 feet long, while the Merlin is second largest at 68.5 feet.
Enrique Lima ZUno, Commodore of the Isla Mujeres Yacht Club estimated that between 10pm Sunday night and the early hours of Monday, the other 27 boats should arrive. The judges will meet on Wednesday to determine the corrected times of each boat, and to establish the winners in each of the six categories.
This competition was one of the fastest, with the first boat completing the crossing of more than 500 nautical miles in less than 45 hours, and the second yacht arrived in less than 47 hours. According to historical data, in 2010, the boats "Muñequita" and "Sweet Melissa", were given corrected time of 44 hours, 19 minutes; and 46 hours and 16 minutes, respectively. In 2013, "Sweet Melissa", was given a corrected time of 49:57 and 25 seconds and "Mango"'s was 49:57 and 13 seconds.

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Turtles begin mating and nesting in May. They can be observed mating offshore from Punta Sur during this month, and they nest along the eastern beaches. Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen outside the facility. This is the dry season when farmers burn brush from their milpa-fields on the mainland, and salt was gathered at Salina Grande lake for hundreds of years, until the mid 1900's.
