Arte Mutuo Festival begins
Seventeen artists are participating in the Arte Mutuo festival, presenting about 25 works of art in a public exhibition. This event is coordinated by the City and the organization "Volunquest". It consists of four parts, with the first being the art gallery at the main hall of the Casa de la Cultura where about 25 works of art by the participating artists are on exhibit and for sale to the general public. Twenty percent of the sales will be donated to the City for public works, including a roof over the patio of the primary school "Julio Sauri Espinoza".
The second aspect is the murals which are being painted around the island in different locations, including the Town Hall, Casa de la Cultura, cemetery, Convention Center, Futbol Rapido soccer stadium, and the malecon. Several artists will collaborate for each mural, which will feature themes of significance and history for the islanders. These include the harvest and transport of salt to Panama, Dia de los Muertos with catrinas of the founders, the origins of tourism on the island, including Ramon Bravo and the beginning of diving as a tourist activity, the history and arrival of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception, and a view of Isla Mujeres from the clouds using a 3D technique.
The third aspect will be providing various workshops for the student community of the municipality, including how to make a flute, a collective mural, and mandalas & geometry, among others.
Finally, there will be volunteer work including encouraging children and young people from the primary schools, as well as the middle school and high school, to participate directly with the artists in the creation of the murals.
The festival began with the inauguration of the public exhibition at the Casa de la Cultura, and was attended by Fidel Villanueva Madrid, the lifetime historian of Isla Mujeres.

The new Ultramar car ferry, "Ultracarga III" could be providing service to Punta Sam by the end of the month, and the company will announce the schedule and rates in the days before that happens. It is noted that Maritima has not increased its rates in nearly two and a half years, despite a 20 percent increase in fuel costs in January 2017. The Maritima rates are: compact vehicle, 292 pesos; truck of 15 meters long, 342 pesos; motorcycle 99, bicycle 93; and 40 pesos per adult passenger. (The cost of the driver is included in the rate of the vehicles.)
The Ultracarga II has a greater capacity for cargo and passengers, in addition to greater comfort, compared to the boats "Isla Blanca" and "Sergio Gracia", and will provide a new option for the increasing numbers of visitors who are coming to the island from the Punta Sam hotel area.
Three Ultramar cargo ferries arrived two weeks ago from Greece and are moored at the concrete dock of the Port Authority, APIQRoo. The other two boats will go to Cozumel.
Due to maintenance issues, the Maritima ferries are running on a Saturday schedule. On Monday, rather than the usual six round trips, only five were offered. This could continue for the rest of the week, offering five round trips rather than eight.

Tourists continue to arrive to Isla Mujeres on the ferries and recreational boats, and many hotels report that their rooms are full. The ~700 rental golf carts were being used by visitors by noon, touring around the island. Tours by boatmen from Puerto Juarez where being provided by nearly a dozen boats.
There were still some unoccupied loungers at noon, expecially on Playa Norte. Playa Centro appeared to be preferred due to its wider area of sand. The diving company had customers, and the boats going to Isla Contoy National Park were filling its daily quota of 200 visitors.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.
Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am.
Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi. (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
