In collaboration with the DIF social service agency, we continue to bring programs and assistance teams to mothers, seniors and people with different abilities from Isla Mujeres. Our priority is to provide well-being to the island families who need it most. VIDEO   

Isla Mujeres Al DIa and the City report: The municipal DIF received a new vehicle adapted for 15 passengers, which will be used to transport those who need it most to their therapies in the Center for Municipal Integral Rehabilitation (CRIM), thanks to coordinated work between the City of Isla Mujeres, and the National and State System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF).
       The general director of the municipal DIF, Hilda Christina Gómez Ávila said the municipal DIF agency is firmly committed to providing well-being to families through programs and supports. Since 2017, they have provided more than 50 wheelchairs, 25 pairs crutches and 5 PCI chairs for children.

     She said, "Our commitment is to being available to help all island families, especially to serving the most vulnerable sectors. We are working hand in hand with the national and state DIF organizations to assist more people. Last year we managed to serve more than 300 families and this year we expect to exceed 500."
     She said that currently the DIF System offers programs including "Madres Unidas", which provides care to single mothers. Through CRIM there is a diploma program available in Sign Language which is given to public officials and island teachers.
        She said that programs offered by the National Institute for the Elderly (Inapam) and by CRIM are available for the benefit of the islanders.
        In conclusion, she explained that Isla Mujeres will begin its certification with the "10xInfancia" Network, which includes 10 priority actions to advance the agenda of the rights of children and adolescents, and if this were achieved, it would be the first municipality of Quintana Roo in be certified.
      With these actions, the City of Isla Mujeres reaffirms its commitment to serve the most vulnerable families in the municipality, through programs and supports that generate well-being and improve their quality of life.

We will reduce the dropout rate in upper secondary education, as well as the non-attendance at that same level of education.

We will establish a strategy of educational inclusion that detects children and adolescents who are not in school, incorporates them and guarantees their continuing.

We will promote adequate nutrition and a healthy lifestyle among children and adolescents

We will reduce the rate of child mortality of girls and boys under 5 years old, through measures that address the inequalities that lead to deaths.

We will carry out work to reduce the rate of maternal mortality in young people and we will prevent pregnancy in girls and adolescents with sexual and reproductive health policies.

We will work on laws regarding the provision of services for comprehensive child care and development.

Implement the Integral System of Specialized Justice for Adolescents in conflict with the criminal law.

We will guarantee that 100% of newborns can have their birth certificate for free, before reaching one year, and that all children between one and five years old are registered.

We will carry out actions that prevent any type of abuse to minors.

We will work for an integral system that protects children and young people.

Isla Mujeres seeks certification with initiative `Ten for children '
The City of Isla Mujeres joins the initiative of Unicef and Redim to comply with ten strategic measures in favor of children  LINK    
         The City of Isla Mujeres joined the initiative "Ten for Children (10XInfancia) in order to strengthen their public actions and work together with civil organizations and the community society in terms of protecting and guaranteeing the rights of girls and boys and adolescents.
         Hilda Christina Gómez Ávila, general director of the Municipal DIF said, "We are very proud to be the first municipality of the state that is starting with this certification in favor of children, which will undoubtedly help us to change the reality in which many girls and boys live. It is a commitment of this municipal government to continue working for a better Isla Mujeres." 
       The official explained that the training is directed at personnel of  various municipal governmental agencies, the private sector, hotels and restaurants and other agencies, in order to protect and guarantee the rights of children and adolescents. 
        The National Network, promoted by the United Nations Children's Fund in Mexico (Unicef) and the Network for Children's Rights in Mexico (Redim), includes ten priority actions to advance the agenda of the rights of infants and adolescents in the country. 
         These ten points contemplate the creation and implementation of an Integral Protection System for Rights of Girls, Boys and Adolescents; prevention, attention and punishment of all forms of violence against children and adolescents; ensure that 100% of newborn babies have their birth certificates for free, before reaching one year, and ensuring that all children between one and five years are registered. 
       Also, implementing the Comprehensive System of Specialized Justice for Adolescents who are in conflict with the criminal law; developing laws in all states regarding the provision of services for comprehensive child care and development; decreasing the maternal mortality ratio by half and prevent pregnancy in girls and adolescents; and reducing the rate of infant mortality and of children under 5 years of age. 
        In addition, promoting adequate nutrition and a healthy lifestyle among children and adolescents; establishing a strategy of educational inclusion that detects children and adolescents outside of school, incorporates them and guarantees their permanence; and reducing the dropout rate in upper secondary education. 
         For this reason, the municipal government of Isla Mujeres reaffirms its commitment to continue working in favor of children through the creation of specific programs that generate the necessary conditions so that the rights of children and adolescents are guaranteed throughout the municipality. 
        The event was attended by representatives of various areas of municipal government and business sector, as well as the child Gustavo Jafet Tun Ruíz, who was elected in 2017 as the representative of children diffusers in Isla Mujeres.


The Navy of México has announced the opportunity to pre-register for 2018 admission to its University campuses, for male and female Mexican youths between the ages of 18 and 20, who have finished their high school studies and want to enter one of the Naval schools to study for a technical degree or an undergraduate degree.
       The Naval University offers the possibility to study quality and cutting-edge education at these schools, where a professional education is offered at the Naval Heroic Military School, in the Naval Medical and Naval Nursing Schools, also for a professional technical degree in Naval Administration, Naval Electronics, and Naval Engineering.
       The Naval Heroic Military School, is located in Antón Lizardo, Veracruz. It offers the Engineering in Naval Systems (General Body), in Hydrography (Marine Infantry), Aeronaval (pilot aviator), in Naval Mechanics, in Electronics and Naval Communications, as well as the degree in Logistics, with a duration of ten semesters. 
      The Naval Medical School, located in Mexico City, offers careers of Naval Surgeon Doctor, which lasts ten semesters, during which the cadets remain intern. 
        Naval Nursing School, located in the port of Veracruz, offers a Bachelor's degree in Naval Nursing, lasting eight semesters, during which the cadets remain interns. 
       Upon entering one of the naval training schools, the cadets receive a scholarship that covers their accommodation, food, uniforms and study materials, in addition to other expenses.
     Information is given for registration online in two categories, with the deadlines and telephone numbers for questions.   
      It is emphasized that in Naval schools professionals are trained with the knowledge and doctrines inherent to the military naval profession, through quality education, since it has integral facilities, state-of-the-art technology and study plans according to the current needs, with what is required to train the cadets and students in terms of strategic, operational and tactical capabilities, to protect the seas, coasts and coastal areas, and national ports.. Wato claims a lack of agreements with José Magaña and returned to retake facilities 
The "marriage" between José Magaña Galué and Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez, better known as the "Wato", did not last 20 days, because today, the latter announced no knowledge of the agreements and took over at the facilities of the "Gustavo Díaz Ordaz" union and decided to give appointments to a Board of Directors.
   Mr. Peniche Rodríguez was accompanied by his new board of directors and all his delegates, some of them having been fired by Mr. José Magaña (the acting, elected President/Secretary General of the union).  "Wato" announced the break of agreements with the current secretary general and said, "As a result of the agreements having not been fulfilled by him, the form is assembled, it is protocolized and it is submitted to the Conciliation and Arbitration agency." 
         He said that all he wants is for the union to keep moving forward. He said, "And as you can see, I'm not on the payroll, it's my daughter who is the treasurer." 
       He said that after José Magaña took office, he changed the locks, which Mr Peniche Rodriguez says should not have happened.
          The form submitted by Peniche Rodríguez was as follows: Secretary General: José Magaña Galué, Secretary of the Interior Irma Moguel Larriva, Foreign Secretary, Miguel Rodolfo Trujillo, Secretary of Labor and Conflicts Aurelio Vicencio Jiménez, Treasurer Amada Alejandra Peniche, Secretary of the Minutes and Agreements, Miguel Ángel May, Secretary of Education, Culture and Sports , Julio Osorio Magaña, Press and propaganda, Lanrry Zacarias Parra Valle.
     In this way, Eduardo Peniche denies knowledge of the Board of Directors proposed by Magaña Galué himself, where obviously Wato's daughter and other followers of him did not appear. 
      Mr. Peniche Rodríguez said that when the agreements with José Magaña were not fulfilled, they found themselves in need of a meeting with the State Government to present a board of directors (una planilla de unidad). 
      At this proceeding, a locksmith was asked to open the doors of the office and the filing cabinets of the union.  Mr. Peniche concluded, "He did not win alone, he won with the support of the partners and now he should be here to face them." LINK

Marinsa buying 51% of  Maritima car ferry company

   Marinsa began providing passenger ferry service between Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juarez on December 15th, and is now forming a financial association with the Maritima ferry company that provides car, cargo, and passenger service between the island and Punta Sam, according to executives of both companies. They say they are currently in the process of delivery-reception of the administration, since Marinsa acquired 51 percent of the shares in Maritima Isla Mujeres, to take over operations in February.
    The financial association took place after a meeting that was held on January 14th. The company expects to face strong competition from Ultramar, which has intentions to operate on the Punta Sam route as soon as possible.
    Maritima has no plans to increase their fees for freight or passenger service, noting "the current prices will be maintained indefinitely", although they have been operating for nearly a year and a half with the same rates, absorbing the increases in diesel prices since then.
   Marinsa began operating passenger ferries on the Puerto Juarez route on December 15, and has plans to acquire modern boats, possibly catamarans, to offer a better alternative to the public, according to an "insistent version'.  Por Esto notes that in their first five weeks of operation, they have achieved 10 percent of the passenger movements. 
      Marinsa, from Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, provides specialized boats for the "offshore" (petroleum) industry; they have "loderos", maintenance boats, "floteles", escort ships, inspection boats, and others. They transport materials, personnel, equipment and diesel offshore in that region.This is their first incursion into the tourism market in this other region and they want to start successfully in this segment to capture the great market of the Mexican Caribbean.

       Municipal president Juan Carrillo Soberanis confirmed today that he will register on January 26th as a candidate of his party (PRI) to seek re-election to the same position he currently holds. He said no breaks are expected in the municipality with the PVEM and Panal parties, and he spoke about his accomplishments in office over the past year and a half. 
      With regard to the electoral times underway, other potential candidates who have been mentioned include Alderman Roberto Martínez,  former legislator Edgar Gasca, and the former Director of the taxi union of taxi drivers, Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day   This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.

 Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
  There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am. 

 Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi.  (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
