Culture of prevention against natural emergencies: Mayor Juan Carrillo
Cultura de prevención
Impulsa Juan Carrillo, ante fenómenos naturales
Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 19 de septiembre.-
The Mayor spoke at the civic ceremony to commemorate National Civil Protection Day, saying, "We are a territory that is exposed to natural phenomena of great magnitude, which forces us to be as prepared as possible." This date was established to remember the devastating earthquake that shook the capital of Mexico on a Richter scale of 8.1, leaving thousands of victims. He also referred to the culture of prevention and hurricanes Gilberto and Wilma which struck Quintana Roo in 1988 and 2005.
He said this culture of prevention includes teaching and having people know what to do before, during, and after a disaster, as well as the constant training and preparations that are done in the area of emergency services (firefighters, lifeguards, and civil protection personnel). Schools and other institutions and businesses receive training and drills, in collaboration with the authorities. Citizens are encouraged to have a plan and preparations at their workplaces and homes to address any adverse situation.
He also asked the community to pull together to help the earthquake victims in Chiapas and Oaxaca who need assistance, especially the families who have been left homeless, without possessions or even food.
Awards were given to companies and schools who participated in the courses and lectures offered during Civil Protection Week and public acknowledgement was given to the Navy and Red Cross for their support to the island community in times of need. Names are given of officials who were present.

Announcing the "Snorkel MUSA" project south of Punta Sam LINK
The Underwater Museum, MUSA, is investing ~2 million pesos in a project called "Snorkel MUSA", with the installation of two large underwater sculptures south of Punta Sam, in order to help conserve the Manchones Reef.
MUSA continues to grow at an impressive rate, with about 300,000 visitors last year, and it is expected to have 350,000 by the end of this year. With this new project, it is hoped that there will be 400,000 visitors next year, due to the growth that is occurring near Punta Sam, according to its president, Roberto Diaz Abraham, who notes that this removes swimmers who would otherwise be impacting the natural reefs.
He said that one will be the pyramid of Kukulcan, 20 meters long and weighing 30 tons, which should be very attractive for the tourists because it is related to the Mayan culture. He explained that the second sculpture will be the image of the Christ of MUSA, who is a resurrected Christ who would be on a monumental cross of more than six meters and that will give the sensation to the tourist, when he visits it, that the figure is trying to leave the sea bottom. He said they have the molds, but haven't prepared the sculptures yet.
Changing of the Director at the high school is official LINK
The previous high school Director, Jorge Martínez Peña, was provisional, with an appointment from January to July 2017. He has been given notice that his position will be completed on September 21st
He was a founder of the school on the island since 1988, working as a teacher and a director of 10 and 8 years, working six years at high schools in other municipalities, and finally a year and a half at the island campus. During his time in office, improvements were made in the areas of infrastructure and maintenance, enabling nine classrooms instead of the previous five, and obtaining more desks for the students. These improvements allowed the school to advance from a level 3 campus to a level 4.
The new director has not been confirmed, but there are rumors that it will be teacher María Inés Alcocer Burgo.
"Isla Mujeres might host the National Handball Championship" said Natanael Gallegos, director of the Municipal Institute of Sport and Recreation after the great performance of the island team in the National Championship held in Querétaro. VIDEO

During his speech for Civil Protection Day, the mayor said that while the island is the safest destination in the country, security will be increased, and there will be zero tolerance for anyone who commits crimes here.
He said, "We are going to reinforce security, if someone is committing some kind of illicit act on the island, with all the laws, we must stop it, by filing a complaint against it with the Attorney General of the State and proceeding with it; what we need are for the legal processes to be followed, however, we as managers of the Municipal Police are "al pie del cañón" (standing by our guns?) for zero tolerance against whoever commits an offense in Isla Mujeres, we will bring them to justice.
