Concerns about hurricane wall
Se encienden los focos rojos[+] Ver masFull article at this link
There are cages of rocks below the hurricane wall downtown (gavions) that residents say are deteriorating and in need of attention, which was worsened with the waves generated by Irma. The history of their construction and that of the wall is given, explaining that different sections were build or rebuilt during the different mayoral administrations. It notes that during Wilma in 2005 and Gilberto in 1988 water flooded the airstrip in the area south of the wall, where the last 100 meters have not been built, coming from the sea, and caused segments to break, which were reconstructed. There are allegations that some of the construction was of lesser quality.
Recalling the power of Hurricane Gilbert
Recuerdan al poderoso “Gilberto”.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
On the 29th anniversary since the massive damage caused to Isla Mujeres by the powerful hurricane "Gilberto", on September 14, 1988, residents are remembering how they they were on their own to reconstruct of their properties, without the aid of a federal or state programs, except for business loans that caused more damage than good, according to the beneficiaries.
Downtown suffered from flooding from the sea, and they were cut off from the area of the colonia by water flooding thru at the northern part of the airfield, as well as water passing side to side in the streets of Carlos Lazo, Matamoros, Abasolo, Madero, Morelos, Nicolás Bravo and Ignacio Allende.
The open sea water joined with water from the bay, with rising levels on the Rueda Medina. In short, the island was destroyed and it took several months before it was ready to receive tourists again, after the slow reconstruction of the electricity grid and the drainage system, because the water plant behind the Casa de la Cultura was destroyed completely.
Many of the small fishing boats of were damaged and seamen were on their own to overcome this and do what was necessary, because there were no immediate programs to reactivate the economy of the fishing industry.
Tourism promotion was not organized or systematized, and at that time individual promoters who helped the community promoted the Caribbean festivals and country music festivals that included musicians from Texas.
The tourism industry workers had no housing, so they occupied an "irregular" property on the east bank of the Salina Grande. That shanty housing was dismantled and it is a miracle that no one died on the island, thanks to the Mexican Navy who played a role in providing important assistance to the population and preventing unfortunate accidents.
Many families and friends gave assistance and shelter to the more than 100 families who settled in that area, and as a result, the state government bought several hectares of surrounding land to provide for them, which is now colonia La Gloria, where more than 500 families live.
The hurricane shelter that was built more than a decade before, had been a building criticized by some, but they were pleased with its use during the administration of the first municipal president, Ariel "Picho" Magana.Foreign aid Foreign aid arrived a week later, including several containers that were destined for Isla Mujeres with food, cleaning supplies and materials to build houses. A total load of about 100 tons, only 20% was for the victims of Cozumel. The fate of all that help was not clear, according to those who remember.
Every day, long lines formed at the headquarters of the Navy of Mexico to receive the canned foods that were being distributed. That help was mainly from Florida yacht clubs. This generosity was very appreciated and reflected for the good friendship between the parties.
After this damage, there were plans for the construction of the hurricane wall along the Caribbean Sea, and the first stretch of 300 meters built by then-governor Roberto Borge Martín. The sewage treatment plant was moved to the southern part of the isle. Many families in the colonias remember the help of the Red Cross who built dozens of houses, in addition to the foreign aid that was provided for construction of what is now the headquarters of the Red Cross in colonia la Gloria.
Now almost all families on the island have concrete houses on the island, and the only community in that is danger is the irregular colony of La Guadalupana, where 90 percent of the residents have homes made with temporary materials, which could be devastated by a category two hurricane.
Dry hurricaneThe effects of Hurricane "Gilberto" began to be felt at six o'clock in the evening, on September 13, which was documented in a video by Enrique Cahuich. At midnight, its intensity was felt and in a matter of 12 hours later, the worst had already passed. At noon on September 14 people were already out looking at the amount of destruction suffered by their properties.
There was also the solidarity with the Cuban fishermen in the following hours and days, who gave fish to the residents from inside their boats, which ran aground on the seawall and other points of Cancun. At that time it was common to see factory ships from Cuba take refuge in the bay, but after that destruction of their fleet, they stopped using that area as a refuge.
The World Meteorological Organization listed it as one of the most destructive in the Atlantic ocean in the 20th century. This category 5 hurricane devastated vegetation on the island and along the entire coast of northern Quintana Roo.
In comparison to Wilma, in 2005, which was a category four, Gilberto crossed this area in less than 12 hours, while Wilma stayed stationary for more than 50 hours. Gilberto was considered a 'dry' hurricane, and there was a great deal of rain with Wilma.
