ISLA MUJERES, 1 de junio.-
The incoming local coordinator of the Isla Mujeres women volunteers, Margarita Adriana García Velasco, said that the heart of the Cruz Roja is the Women's Volunteer Committee, because it is through them that they approach the community requesting the donations which are necessary to carry out the assistance and programs of the Red Cross.
The state's president of the Red Cross women's volunteers, Noemí Peralta de Constandse, said that the Red Cross operates only with the financial support provided by the community, which has been and will continue to be a very important challenge, since it requires a great deal to provide emergency and relief services to the inhabitants and to collaborate with the three levels of Government before, during and after in the passage of meteorological phenomena throughout the state. Names of officials attending are given.

Hurricane could separate the island in two
Huracán partiría la isla en dos[+] Ver masFull article at this link
Some residents are concerned about vulnerability if a hurricane hits the island that is as strong as Wilma, (October 2005) or Gilberto (1988), and say the island could be cut in two from that point on. A section of the wall by the (Aguakan) potable water plant broke in 2005, from the force of waves that were five meters high, and seawater flooded the airfield, which is 50 meters inland.
They say the first 300 meter section of the hurricane wall that was built after Gilberto has no problems, but that the rest of the 1000 meters is not of the same quality, where sections are deteriorating and eroding. The rock cages at the base of the wall are also deteriorated. It is noted that the cliffs along the eastern side of the island are being eroded by the sea and increasingly weakened, year by year, which provide natural defenses for the colonias in that area.

Concerns about safety at the beaches

June 1 Before the start of the upcoming summer tourist season, three new lifeguard towers will be built on the most crowded beaches on Isla Mujeres, said Civil Protection Director Ulises Berman Graniel, thus guaranteeing the safety of the swimmers. It will be financed by businesses holding concessions in the Federal Zone. One of the towers will be in the Continental Zone of Isla Blanca because of the large number of swimmers from Cancun on that beach, and they are training personnel to be lifeguards there.
The two lifeguard towers on the island will be located in front of Hotel Mia and at Media Luna (Half Moon beach). The official said they will also address the tower that is located on the beach by the end of Hidalgo, which is currently unsafe and not operational.
By the start of the holiday period, there should be six surveillance towers in operation, which is sufficient for the well prepared crew of lifeguards to prevent unfortunate accidents at the beaches. Most of the Isla Mujeres beaches have no problem with dangerous currents, however Media Luna beach is dangerous. It has warnings and red flags, but people still enter the area, which has whirlpools, and just last year a life was lost there. Mr Berman said they request that staff of nearby hotel advise guests not to swim in that area.
Another beach that is considered dangerous because of strong currents is down by the sewage treatment plant, and locals are advised not to swim there, as well as at the beach known as "Acapulquito" by the Caribbean malecon (walkway). The officials said, ""These sites are not safe, there are strong currents. In addition, there are dangerous species like sea urchins; people should take precautions. "
