One of the main assets of Isla Mujeres is the quality of services, which encourages many of the tourists who visit for the first time to return and spend long periods enjoying its positive offerings.
The government of Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis is interested in maintaining the quality of services and working with the state and federal governments to maintain high rates of occupancy and increasing numbers of visitors arriving.
He said, "It is relevant for us as a government to know that Isla Mujeres is a well-established tourist destination, which continues to grow in terms of its hotel offerings and attractions for tourists, who prefer us for the quality of services they receive." He said that for this reason, we must continue to treat our visitors well, to guarantee that they are satisfied and will want to return in the future.

The priority of the government of Mayor Juan Carrillo is to ensure the safety of tourists, to benefit the economy of the islanders, with continuous training and improvement of the police to provide better care and services to vacationers.
The Mayor said, "Caring for the image of this destination is a matter of vital importance for our national and foreign visitors. Besides feeling safe, they must know that the police are there to help them, guide them, care for them, and protect them. Tourism is the main source of income and source of employment in the municipality, hence the importance of serving tourists as they deserve; making them feel safe while they are here and satisfied when they return to their place of origin, where they will speak well of our destination, "
He said that thanks to the coordinated efforts between the three levels of government, the island remains a safe and attractive destination for visitors, to ensure tranquility for them. Proof of this is the 'saldo blanco' (no incidents) on this long weekend.
The Mayor recognized the work of the Public Safety and Traffic agents to maintain the tranquility of the island, as well as the work of the lifeguards to prevent accidents on the beaches. He stressed that cooperation is important so that tourists leave with a good image of Isla Mujeres as a safe destination for vacationers, where private individuals, community organizations, and the three levels of government work together for the well being of this destination.

Noches Magicas /Magic Nights performances delighted the audience on the Town Square on Sunday evening with artistic and cultural festivities. It included performances by singers César López, César Rentería, and by the dance troupes "Isla en Movimiento", "Danza Urbana", and "Danzoneros Unidos al Danzón por Quintana Roo", who are from this municipality and from Cancun. This reaffirms the commitment of the administration of the municipal president, Juan Carrillo, through the Institute of Culture and Arts, to provide entertainment activities for island families.

The process continues with the federal agency CORRETT (Regularización de la Tenencia de la Tierra ) toward obtaining land titles for the 200 lots of the families of the Asociación Nueva Tierra, for their development in the mainland part of the municipality.

The Municipal President of Isla Mujeres, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, held a meeting with the ambassador of Spain in Mexico, Luis Fernández-Cid de las Alas Pumariño, where the mayor explained that it is the intention of his government to strengthen the bonds of friendship with the Spanish people. During the meeting, the mayor stated that on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the first encounter between our two cultures, with the sighting of our Isla Mujeres by the Spaniards, on March 3-5 there will be festivities to celebrate this important event. An invitation was extended to the diplomat for Spanish artists to participate.
The Mayor also said it is the intention of the City of Isla Mujeres to seek a sister city status with the Spanish port of Santa Maria, Cadiz.

. There is still no date for the completion of the work of the Federal Electrical Commission, (CFE) which has been taking place for more than three weeks. It is recalled that there was a blackout on January 15 which affected the whole island, and the problem occurred again the next day. The underground line was the source of the problem, and it was decided to excavate 480 meters under Adolfo Lopez Mateo avenue, and replace the four principal lines. Generators were provided in the event of another interruption, and the work was expected to take three weeks.
The reporter toured the work area and observed that about 200 meters of tubing has been installed underground from the beach near Chichis, toward Rueda Medina (main stret) and the trench that they created is being filled in. Work along Adolfo Lopez Mateos has begun and it is causing traffic problems, especially Monday thru Friday when the schoolchildren are being taken to and from the primary school Andres Quintana Roo.
City personnel were touring the work area and explained that they intend to have the best installation possible and are installing a secondary line in case of emergency, to avoid another incident like that which occurred last month when the whole island was without power for 16 hours. The CFE has not issued information about the progress of the work or when it is expected to be concluded.

The Cocteleros of Isla Mujeres will be among the eight teams competing in the state baseball tournament which begins Sunday, Feb. 12. Although there was interest in having two teams in the competition, there was only enough money for one.

The leader of the CROC union in Isla Mujeres, Roman Maldonado Euan, said there continues to be plenty of jobs available among the 20 companies with whom they have negotiated agreements. He also said these terms will be improved for the benefit of the workers in upcoming months.

Taxi union wants to provide bus service with 2-3 combis
The leader of the union of taxi drivers of Isla Mujeres, Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez, acknowledged that public transportation is important for the island, and said that a proposal will be submitted to the City to provide this service to the colonias to help the students and people with fewer resources.
He said, "The City would have to request applicants, and we, as a
union, are available to offer the option of urban transportation to the
people "
Regarding what type and quantity of vehicles would be necessary to provide this passenger service, he explained that the idea isn't to use autobuses or vans. "We could meet the demand with two or three vehicles carrying 15-17 passengers each, allowing them to get around the island faster."
In regard to the routes, he said, "We would have two routes; one along the Caribbean coast and the other going thru the colonias where it is necessary to provide transport throughout the morning for the students."
He said that the cost per passenger is dictated by SINTRA and he explained, "Today the taxis have a rate of 30 pesos with a 50 percent discount for the islanders and a fee of eight pesos for the students. The cost of the combis would be similar, with a prior agreement with the City.I think Isla Mujeres is the only place where students go to school in a taxi for eight pesos. In Cancun, for example, that is the cost to ride in a combi. Therefore, it is necessary that the rates are complementary with the current services."
In terms of past experiences he pointed out that it is necessary for all municipalities to have urban public transportation and if the island does not have it, this is because there was a concession that lasted 15 or 16 years, who never fulfilled the requirements.
In conclusion he said, "This should be determined in 60 to 90 days. We are local and we are going to comply to enter the bidding with whatever financial guarantees the City requires and with the necessary vehicles. We are able to offer the services for passenger transportation to which our union is dedicated.

Need for urban transportation

There are more than 2000 elementary and middle school students who finish class after midday and have problems returning home, because taxi drivers who prefer to transport tourists do not want to transport them.
Girls can be seen out under the strong sun, carrying their loads of books, who may have to walk long distances of up to three kilometers, while other students whizz past them, who are privileged to have transportation by their parents. At least half of the primary schools students, middle school students, and high schoolers walk home, amidst busy traffic on the main roads of the island. For the preschoolers and kindergarten children, the situation is different, whose parents come for them on motos and in vehicles. Some use a taxi at 11am when classes are out.
Workers on the afternoon/evening shifts without their own vehicles have similar problems. During 'rush hour' the roads are busy with carts full of tourists, coming and going from Punta Sur, some of whom drive "alocados" (crazily), which puts at risk the young people who are not experts at driving scooters. Meanwhile there has been silence from the City government about this problem for workers and schoolchildren regarding the need for public transportation.

Alderman for the MORENA party, Roberto Martinez, was handing out leaflets at the vehicular ferry regarding charges being made by the City and by SINTRA, which he alleges are not supported by law and which he says are causing increased prices for food and beverages on the island.

Controversy continues within the taxi union, with 170 members of a coalition being opposed to the union leader Eduardo Peniche "Wato", whose election has not yet been endorsed by the JLCA (Board of Conciliation and Arbitration). A decision is expected this month, and key dates are said to be the 18th and 22nd. The coalition includes 160 members in the Continental Zone and 10 on the island, who are hoping that the JLCA will issue a denial and there will be a new election.

Alderman Carlos Gamboa Ortiz has submitted a proposal in writing to request reactivation of urban transport service. He says there has been interest from his colleagues to discuss it, and he believes service may soon be offered.
Details would need to be discussed with the appropriate commission, in order to comply with regulations, before requesting applicants. Routes would need to be defined, and extended in the Continental Zone, according to the needs of users in that part of the municipality.
He said the City Council should analyze the situation based on the needs of the citizens, including the thousands of schoolchildren who have trouble getting to and from school. The Alderman for the MORENA party, Roberto Martinez, is working on the same issue, and said it has been nearly a year with no urban transport service, since the end of the contract period with the company Isla Turicun.
There are no dates yet, but it is thought that the call for applicants should go out during the first few months of the year. Those who might enter the competition could include Turicun, Autocar, and taxi drivers from Isla Mujeres and Cancun, however this could represent a conflict of interest, especially for the taxi drivers.

Los Cahuameros de Isla Mujeres Nueva Generación retained their second place position in the Major Basketball League of Quintana Roo with two victories this past weekend against the Alphas of Chetumal, with scores of 74-42 and 72-53.
On Saturday and Sunday they will face the Dorados of Playa del Carmen, who have a record of 19 wins and only one loss, which was to the Islanders of Cozumel at the start of the tournament. Isla Mujeres has had 14 wins and six losses, and will play their opponents here on the island this weekend.

The municipal government is investing about 4 million pesos to provide vehicles for trash collection and police patrols. They are expected to be delivered at the end of the week and the Governor may be present. This investment includes 1.2 million pesos for two patrol vehicles, 600,000 for three motorcycles, and 2.5 million pesos for two garbage collection trucks, for the island and the mainland.
The Mayor, Juan Luis Carrillo Soberanis, said that unfortunately in 2017, Isla Mujeres is not included in the FORTASEG program, because it is one of the safest municipalities, even though it is adjacent to one of the most unsafe municipalities in the country.
He said last year we received 11 million pesos, but we not meet the standards this year because was are a safe municipality, despite his argument about being next to one of the most insecure municipalities in the country. He said that in Cancun, there are federal forces for response and support and intelligence work, with operations by the Federal Police, the Navy, the Department of National Defense, state police, and municipal police. It is worrisome that Cancun is so close, therefore it is a priority to provide for Isla Mujeres, with its own resources, for infrastructure and security, to hire more qualified police, and anyone caught in acts of corruption will not only be fired, they will face criminal prosecution, if the situation warrants it.

Monsignor Fabio Martinez Castilla, Archbishop of Chiapas,visited his family in Isla Mujeres and took a short break, while he celebrating 40 years as a priest. He officiated a mass in the church of Immaculate Conception. He was interviewed about his lifetime of service, which included working at missions in Africa, being archbishop in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan, and now he is archbishop in Tuxtla Guitierrez, Chiapas.

The Artist's Fairs are scheduled weekly on Thursdays at the Casa de Cultura, 4-9 thru April 20.
