Committee for the Prevention of Forest Fires installed
Combatientes listos
Instalan Comité de Prevención de Incendios Forestales
Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 17 de febrero.-
ISLA MUJERES, 17 de febrero.-
In the presence of authorities from the three levels of government, the Municipal Forest Fire Prevention and Control Committee of Isla Mujeres was installed, with a request to the public in general to contribute to the effort by not throwing cigarette butts along the side of the road, not making bonfires, and not having any clandestine burning of brush.
The committee is in charge of implementing appropriate strategies for the detection, fighting, and control of fires in risk areas in the municipality, in the Continental Zone. The event took place at Rancho Viejo.
Citizen participation is important in fire prevention, especially during dry season when there are increased risk factors which include planned agricultural fires, and the presence of poachers and human activities in the forested areas. Members of the community are urged to call 911 to report any forest fires, said the municipal director of Civil Protection, Helman Ulises Berman Graniel.
Rafael Leon Negrete, Director of the National Forest Commission (Conafor) in Quintana Roo, explained that the Continental Zone has vegetation cover and a lot of high risk surface with combustible material. Therefore he asked that the Ejidal Commissariats of Isla Mujeres and Francisco May to have control over the agricultural fires, "since if they are done very carefully the threat of fire will be smaller."
"Wato" is just a concession holder

ISLA MUJERES, 17 de febrero.-
The JLCA (Local Board of Conciliation and Arbitration) refused to endorse the results (no toma de nota) of the election held by the Assembly of the Taxi Union on December 17, based on Federal Labor Laws, because they said it violated the statutes of the union.
However, in a video broadcast on social networks, Eduardo Peniche said their authorization (toma de nota) isn't necessary for him to have full recognition. He said it is the decision made by the Assembly on December 17 which indicates he has the loyalty of the taxi drivers. He plans to follow legal procedures and file an amparo against the decision by the JLCA. He said it is the power of the Assembly that prevails, and the toma de nota (authorization) is not necessary for him to be recognized. He said this is a courtesy that is usually granted by the state government. He said he appreciates that the Governor is not interfering with union decisions.
He said the issue of his rivals for the position will be dealt with at a different level, and he accused them of being politicians with PRD and PAN who want to use the union for their purposes. He didn't talk about launching another call (for a new election) which was requested by six of his seven opponents. He wants to continue in office to complete 15 years as leader of the union.
His opponents, Miguel Chan Mena, Julio Osorio Magaña, Darwin García, Juan Manuel Valdez and Marcelino Cezal, who are group leaders, said they are committed to use legal means to drive Wato out of the union, without resorting to violence. After Monday, they will file a suit for property damage and improper use of resources, because he no longer has legal authorization.
At a press conference, they advised partners and operators to continue to pay their dues, and said that all the actions by Eduardo Peniche and his people are not legal. They exhibited the document issued by the JLCA on Feb. 7th, which says in part: "... although the General Assembly is the highest governing body of this group, it is also true that the decisions taken by it should be subject to the Statutes that govern them, which cannot be transgressed, based on sections VIII, IX And X of article 371 to the Federal Labor Law. Therefore, it is not possible to agree to recognize the Elected Executive Committee, and consequently, the requested 'toma de nota' it is not being issued."

INSTALLATION OF THE MUNICIPAL FOREST FIRE PREVENTION COMMITTEE
This occurred in the Continental Zone, on the mainland part of the municipality of Isla Mujeres.
The government of Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis is interested in promoting art and local culture.
Isla Mujeres is a Pueblo Magico with fine attractions that make it a unique tourist destination, which includes the Fair of Art and Flavor (Feria del Arte y Sabor), which features products made by local artists, live music, national, regional, and international food stalls, craft beer, (and art by foreign artists). Isla Mujeres is an island with a history of recognized artists, and for this municipal administration it is of utmost importance to continue promoting the new generations of local artists, said the director general of Culture and Arts, who added that in this initiative has the full support of the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
The Feria del Arte & Sabor is held monthly (sic, in high season it's every Thursday), next to the Casa de la Cultura, at Abasolo. This cultural event attracts hundreds of tourists and local residents. Isla Mujeres has a legacy of artists, composers and musicians who have transcended borders, contributing to shape the character and cultural identity of the islanders, which is also reflected in the streets with vibrantly colored murals representing nature and passages of daily life.
Rubén Pérez Martín, Director of the Institute of Culture and Arts, said that on the instructions from the municipal president, various events have been launched in order to promote various artistic and cultural expressions on the Island and in the Continental Zone, such as the Feria del Arte y Sabor.

Fire fighters were called to put out a vehicle fire around 4am on Friday, which was a total loss. It belonged to Arturo Cutz Cardena, who arrived after the fire fighters. The case is in the hands of the Ministerio Publico, who were waiting for a complaint to be filed. who will then investigate the cause of the fire, which is thought to be a short circuit.
The SINTRA delegate was not in his office when Eduardo Peniche arrived with a notary to present documents, and the secretary, who was the only person in the office, declined to accept the documents.

SINTRA "breaks" with taxi union leader "Wato"
Sintra “rompe” con el “Wato”. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Eduardo Peniche Rodriquez, does not have any legal authorization from JCLA (Local Board of Conciliation and Arbitration) after they refused to authorize his position (toma de nota), saying thate were irregularities in the election.
On Friday, "Wato" wanted to intervene before SINTRA, Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport on behalf of an alleged concessionaire of a taxi placa (plate), which appears to be one of the 600 plates suspended by SINTRA.
The delegate for Communications and Transport, Jorge Miguel Martin Alvarez, said that intervention was not necessary and this is a simple procedure that any possessor of a concession can perform. He said the Wato intended to show the union members that he is still in charge of the union. The official said he could not receive the documents because he was in a meeting in Cancun, but the agency's secretary informed them that he was on his way back to Isla Mujeres, but they did not want to wait. He said the agency can receive documents, if there are no indications not to do so, and then they will have 90 days to respond. He said the Eduardo Penich has no legal standing to be able to process procedures with that agency.
Saturation of streets by golf carts
Saturación de carros de golf.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
It is estimated that a thousand golf carts circulate the streets of Isla Mujeres daily, due to complacency by the Traffic Police and SINTRA, who are allowing an indeterminate number to be on the streets, despite lacking plates. This has been documented by several taxi drivers, who consider this as unfair competition. This includes H Daniel C Gamboa, who posted on Facebook that he sent this material to the City Council members, including the MORENA representative, Roberto Martinez.
Officially, the number of carts registered with SINTRA (Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport) is over 700 units, however there are almost 20 rental agencies who allegedly rent vehicles to tourists without a plate or with a different plate to as a 'disguise'. The taxi drivers say they estimate there are now more than a thousand golf carts in circulation around the isle, which is an unprecedented number, since ten years ago there were less than 300.

The Cozumel team has had six consecutive victories since Bardley Esquivel took over as coach.
Concern over increased ferry rate
Tibia respuesta del ayuntamiento.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The secretary general of the municipality, Joel Sauri, said they will analyze the proposal by business owners and private individuals that the City of Isla Mujeres request a review by the SCT regarding whether the 100% increase in the fare on the Puerto Juarez-Isla Mujeres route is justified by the costs of operation of the Ultramar ferry company. No date was specified regarding when the proposal will be analyzed for possible inclusion on the agenda of the City Council.
It is noted that the ferry rate for tourists crossing to the island rose 22 percent before Christmas, and last week it increased to 300 pesos round trip, which is similar to the cost to cross to Cozumel, which is a longer trip.
Former Councilman Arturo Rios Magana is asking that the SCT conduct a review and he notes that during the 2008-2011 administration the municipality filed a complaint against Ultramar and against the Magana ferry company before the Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE) for monopolistic practices, which resulted in a million peso fine against Ultramar. He recommended the same procedure should be done by the City.
