ISLA MUJERES, 2 de febrero.-
To commemorate World Wetlands Day, there was a collective clean up of the mangroves along the Sac Bajo road. The ~80 participants included private individuals, students from the high school Colegio Bachilleres, and members of City government , who are endorsing the commitment of Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis to work for the well being of the ecosystems and natural resources of the island.
The Director of ZOFEMAT, Vladimir Vallejo Molina, said that the Mayor has given instructions for these types of activities to be carried out at least twice a month, with environmental education, to encourage citizen involvement with active participation. He said they have been conducting workshops in the primary, secondary, and high schools to raise awareness about caring for the environment
The Director explained, "This day is important for the preservation and care of our wetlands, which are of vital importance in a municipality like ours, since we have four species of mangrove growing here. Therefore, the Mayor has instructed us to work to promote their care, providing us with all the necessary tools for this purpose."

The Chairman of the Board of Health Carlos Manuel Gamboa Ortiz sent another request to the Mayor of the municipality of Benito Juarez (Cancun), Remberto Estrada, asking him to comply with the commitment that exists toward Isla Mujeres to pay more than $15 million pesos that are owed for use of the landfill (which is located within the mainland part of the municipality of Isla Mujeres).. He said that this income is needed by municipality of Isla Mujeres in order to absorb the costs that have been created and will continue forward with the work of the rescuing the Trash Transfer Facility located at the south part of the island of Isla Mujeres.
An agreement was signed in 2013 that the municipality would be paid 200,000 pesos monthly for use of the landfill. He said with payment of the debt from the municipality of Benito Juarez, money could be invested in the Trash Transfer Facility so that it would no longer be the open landfill that currently exists. He said the Mayor is working to keep the island clean but under the previous administration the infrastructure for trash collection was neglected for three years.

Problems persist with trash collection
Prevalecen deficiencias en la recoja de basura. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Although the frequency of trash removal has improved in recent months, the vehicle fleet is not sufficient to deal with this problem in the high season of tourism, and the most affected are residents in the colonias. Residents are complaining about seeing overflowing trash at times, which stray animals get into, in the colonias of La Gloria, Cañotal, Miraflores, and Salina Chica, among others. Although two vehicles have been acquired, more are needed and this is insufficient in high season. There are plans to replace the old units during the year, according to the Director of Public Services, Jose Rios. The old vehicles are plagued with mechanical failures, and there have been failures in meeting the new schedule. It is noted that businesses pay large sums of money for trash collection, and that many residents want more money invested in renewing the trash collection fleet.
Contoy National Park generates income, needs investment

An average of 73,000 tourists visit the Isla Contoy National Park annually, generating an income of 4.3 million pesos, but less than half of that money is returned to the Park. The tourist infrastructure is four decades old in in need of renewal, according to reports. There is a capacity limit of 200 visitors daily, but it is said this has been exceeded regularly in recent years. Each visitor is charged 60 pesos, which represents an income of more than four million pesos yearly.
Although the park has generated increasing income in the last five years, this has contrasted with the federal policy of reducing staff, and there have been complaints that they have not supplied enough gas to adequately monitor the park. Environmental specialists who have been monitoring the evolution of the protection of the park since its use was regulated two decades ago. For this reason they urge the federal government to consider the total renovation of the facilities, which include a museum, restrooms, staff rest area, and a watchtower. The tower has been repaired recently, and has weathered two major storms, Hurricane Gilberto in 1988 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
Tourism service providers who were interviewed want the municipal and state governments to pressure SEMARNAT (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources). One of the licensees said, "We want more money to be returned to equip and expand the surveillance staff and to provide enough gas for patrols inside and outside the perimeters of the park." He said that due to a lack of vigilance at night, poachers enter the closed area to catch sardines, which are an essential food for the thousands of migratory birds that nest on the island.
