The work on the parks "Las Iguanas" and "The Hormiguitas Obreras" is 50% complete. Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis visited the two parks this (Tuesday) morning to personally supervise the work. He was accompanied by the Director of Public Works, César Poot Pérez, to supervise the construction of the bathrooms in the park "Las Hormiguitas Obreras", as well as the lifting of the palapa in the park "Las Iguanas".
He said these are works that will provide a better quality of life for the islanders."We are supervising these jobs to make sure the children have quality parks. These are areas where people gather, which strengthens friendships and strengthens family ties. I am committed to the islanders and their well-being," said the Mayor. Supervision also actively involves the staff of the municipal comptroller, to ensure that the services and materials used for construction are of the best quality, as well as assuring that all agreements in the contracts are fulfilled.
The Mayor commented that the ongoing supervision will be maintained at the sites until they are completed and operational in December. In this way, they will assure that islander families will have safe and durable public spaces.

Harbor Master Ismael Gonzalez Gil explained that mechanical problems caused the sailboat "Banana Republic" to break thru the buoy line that protects swimmers at the Posada del Mar beach ("Playa Centro") on Tuesday morning. The boat's engine broke down and the anchor did not settle on the bottom of the sea, and that is why the sailboat continued moving, out of control, until it approached the Posada Beach.
The incident occurred at 7am, and there were no injuries to swimmers in the area, nor to the three crew members. The sailboat was originally from Texas and was entering the Bay of Isla Mujeres, where they intended to remain for some days. The buoy line was damaged and the crew of the boat will cover its repair. The port authorities assisted the boat until it was docked at the pier of the Isla Mujeres Yacht Club, owned by the Lima Zuno family, where it remains.

Tuesday morning Mayor Juan Carrillo made a supervisory tour of the work on the palapa at the park "Iguanas" as well as the cleaning of parks and gardens of that park. The mayor also supervised the work being done on the park "Las Hormiguitas".

Ultramar: From bad to worse

There have been complaints about 20 minute delays in the last two departures of the Ultramar ferry boats on Sunday. Cesar Peniche, a local customer, said the boat scheduled to depart at 10:30 didn't leave until nearly 11pm. Rosa Velez and Elvira Solis agreed that the delays are more common after 6pm. One said that recently when leaving Puerto Juarez the boat stopped, and the crew gave no explanation. There are also complaints about failures of the air conditioning system, which can be especially difficult for children and the elderly in the heat of the day.
In early 2016, the Magana ferry company discontinued operations, due to economic problems, without further explanations. At the second half of 2016, it appeared that Barco Caribe ferry company would come to the island, but they did not get started before the change of government. (That company is owned by the family of the former governor).
One of the people interviewed said, "We don't care who owns the new ferry company. What we want is another option for users so we don't have to rely on a monopoly which has no interest in giving us the friendly customer service that we deserve."

The lowering of the icon of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception took place on Monday evening before an audience of more than 4000 people, inside and outside of the church. Following the Mass and taking down of the Virgin, the parishioners participated in the traditional procession through the streets, walking and singing. They traveled down several streets, including Matamoros, to Rueda Medina and then returned to the starting point, singing hymns and songs.
At 9pm the festival was inaugurated with a ribbon cutting event by the parish priest Raul Sanchez Alonso, who was accompanied by the head of the municipal DIF, Paola Orico de Carrillo, and by Suemy Beatriz, who was representing the Mayor. There were fireworks with the ribbon cutting.
It is noted that soon it will be the 500 year anniversary of Isla Mujeres being under the protection of Mary and the Catholic Church. This refers to the arrival of the Spanish in the region in March 1517, who then built what would be the first convent in America, which was abandoned, and is located in the continental zone of Boca Iglesia.
