Concern over loss of reefs and mangroves
Tema de seguridad nacional
Los arrecifes y zona de manglares

ISLA MUJERES, 2 de julio.-
ISLA MUJERES, 2 de julio.-
The Director of the Isla Contoy National Park, Maria del Carmen Garcia Rivas, said the reduction in artisan fishing is due to the drastic disappearance of at least fifty percent of the reefs and mangroves in this area of the state, which is attributed to the proliferation of large tourist hotels and housing. Development and poaching are leading to the disappearance of many
marine species in the northern part of the state of Quintana Roo.
She said the ecosystems are damaged and collapsing, and in the case of the mangroves, a four year study showed losses of up to fifty percent in the Northern Zone of the state. Research indicated that the healthy reefs are declining, except Banco Chinchorro and Cozumel Island, which are the best preserved areas in Mexico.
She said the state of Quintana Roo is developing a biodiversity strategy and various initiatives to work toward creating a biosphere reserve; to create a hydrological reserve. She said it is important to take this situation seriously; that the disappearance of reefs and mangroves is an issue of national security, these resources must be conserved, which not only provide food, but which also support tourism.
In conclusion, she said the reefs, coastal dunes, mangroves, and sea grasses protect the area during storms, so that during the hurricane Wilma the reef surrounding Puerto Morelos "contained the equivalent of about 25 atomic bombs". ( de tal forma que durante el huracán “Wilma”, la franja de arrecife de la zona de Puerto Morelos contuvo algo equitativo a 25 bombas atómicas.)

Agreement between five fishing cooperatives & "SeaEcology" & Isla Contoy Park personnel
Logran acuerdo sustancial
Pescadores de cinco cooperativas y personal del Parque Nacional Isla Contoy

ISLA MUJERES, 1 de julio.-
The Director of the Isla Contoy National Park, Maria del Carmen Garcia Rivas, said an agreement was reached between the fishermen of the five cooperatives of Isla Mujeres and personnel of the park regarding the remodeling of the fishing camp cabins, which should have decent bathrooms. The remodeling will be financed by the NGO "SeaEcology". It was established that the cabins are in poor condition, and there is an overgrowth of vegetation, and an intention to keep that cleared. For the benefit of the fishermen who camp there, they will be allowed to have their coolers on land, which was previously banned. This will allow them to keep their products, such as fish and lobster, in good condition.
The Director explained that these agreements will help the fishermen avoid spending so much money on fuel returning to Isla Mujeres to deliver their catches. The fishermen agreed to listen to reports regarding the previous season and are in agreement, and to be aware of the amount of lobster near Isla Contoy and what improvements can be made. They expressed their views about the costs of operating and maintaining the fishing camp and agreed to comply with the both the regulations of the Isla Contoy National Park, and the regulations regarding not fishing in certain areas.
The fishermen also agreed to assist with the control of the Red Palm Mite, for example with the treatments which are required following the Mass for the arrival of the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre, as part of the improvements. She said the start of the fishing season includes at field visit to review the cabins, the fishing sites and possible fishing sites for the location of casitas for the restoration of spiny lobsters to rescue the artisan fishing, in a sustainable manner. (Lobster casitas are man made structures placed underwater where lobsters like to seek shelter.)

On Thursday, June 30, it was ninety days, since the five fishermen of the boat "Anastacia" left Isla Mujeres to go shark fishing at Punta Molas, near Cozumel island, and nothing is known about what happened to them. Meanwhile their families live in the midst of crippling anxiety and uncertainty, not knowing if they are alive or dead. No evidence has been found of the boat or the men.
It was determined they were missing on the afternoon of April first, when a search was begun that lasted 22 days, without result. The wives and relatives continue to hope the five men will return. The latest news is that the PGR (Attorney General's Office) has taken up the case, after the families and wives requested intervention by the CNDH (National Human Rights Commission).

The head of the Isla Mujeres Vectors Department, Jorge de la Cruz Velazquez, said the fight against the mosquito that transmits diseases such as Chikungunya, Zika, and Dengue continues every day, nearly 24 hours a day. He said they are working even during the madrugada (wee hours of the night) in a constant battle against these mosquitoes, with thermo-nebulization and fogging, as well as larval control. He said they have been treating the schools, and some churches in an attempt to cover the whole island, and he gave assurances that they are addressing them all in an thorough manner.
He said it is important that residents review their yards and patios and eliminate any potential breeding areas for mosquitoes, and allow workers to inspect their yards and courtyards. He said it is important to allow workers to do their jobs of destroying potential breeding grounds, as well as the fogging work. He said the larval control brigades have been working in colonia Electristas, and colonia La Guadalupana, and they are doing increased fogging in areas where it is needed.
He said there was a slight increase in the proliferation of mosquitoes after the recent rains, which they have been countering with spraying campaigns in the colonias and downtown area. He said the biggest problems are in the colonias of n La Gloria, La Guadalupana, Electricistas, Miraflores, and in the area of the Mundaca Hacienda, where there is a large concentration of vegetation.

Three events took place reinforcing the significance of the designation of Isla Mujeres as a Pueblo Magico.
On Thursday afternoon the general results were presented of the diagnostic work of the Cadena Productiva (lit. Productive Chain) of Isla Mujeres Pueblo Magico. Appreciation was given to all the sectors of society who participated in making this a successful task.
The second event was held in the newly remodeled and modernized City Council room, where an agreement was signed between the City and the University of Quintana Roo, whose students will help carry out the annual evaluation established in the General Guidelines for Isla Mujeres to continue to be included in the Pueblos Magicos program. Students from UQRoo will draw up, apply, and interpret surveys of tourists visiting Isla Mujeres Pueblo Magico during the vacation season, to evaluate the services provided at this tourism destination.
The third event was held at the perimeter fence for the airfield, across from the exit of the ferry dock, where there was an unveiling of a commemorative plaque. Also, the Mayor inaugurated a large colorful mural alluding to the history of the island and the elements that make up daily life in Isla Mujeres. The Mayor spoke about being a Pueblo Magico and said the island and islanders offer friendship, cordiality, quality, history, gastronomy, architecture, world class beaches, and all the wonders of that Nature has given us. Authorities attending the event are listed.

The tourists who walk into Sac Bajo to see the Makax lagoons, the channel for small boats, and the flora and fauna are at risk, because there is a lack of sidewalks for most of the two kilometer road. The road is often busy with vehicles, the weeds are not cleared from beside the pavement, and the tourists don't want to step into the vegetation because they are afraid of the risk of being attacked by insects and poisonous animals.

On Sunday, two islander teams will clash at the El Pescador stadium for the start of the summer season of the Tecnológica League. The local circuit of this league includes teams from Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos y Cozumel. (In the recent winter season, these two Isla Mujeres teams fought over the Championship and second place).
The game will start at noon with the Cocteleros acting as the Visiting team and the Pescadores as the Home team. Players, coaches, and administrators are listed. The general public is invited and encouraged to come and enjoy the show, which is expected to be good.
Good start to lobster season

Fishermen with the five Isla Mujeres cooperatives reported good catches on the first day of lobster season. Some reported they made more than 2000 pesos on the first day, and expect the same on the second day. The price per kilo is 440 pesos for tails and 250 for whole lobsters. The cost can vary, depending on how much is retained by each cooperative for administrative expenses. Members and some administrators with the Isla Mujeres fishing cooperatives Caribe, Patria y Progreso, Justicia Social, Isla Blanca and Makax agree with this, but also say you must be aware that the catches will decrease in upcoming days, because in the fall the norte winds cause the lobsters to walk southward. The fishermen are diving and collecting lobsters from their traps north and south of Isla Mujeres and near Isla Contoy National Park.
No Hyperbaric Chamber
The season began on July 1, lasting eight months, and the fishermen are currently vulnerable in the event of any cases of accidental decompression, because the hyperbaric chamber for treating them is not available due to a lack of funding. It was never moved to the Community Hospital. It did not receive maintenance during the four months of the lobster fishing ban, and lacks any patronage money for this responsibility.

Cutting mangroves in Sac Bajo

Municipal authorities were informed by residents regarding cutting of mangrove plants in Sac Bajo with a chainsaw, using a small mobile power plant. Piles of wood have been placed to build a pier. It is noted in the past three years there have been other cases of destruction of protected mangrove plants without penalties being imposed. The workers did not want to talk to the reporter, and were focused on their work with the noisy chainsaw, which is a unique sound in the wetland area. A few meters away. there are municipal closure seals that were placed last year on a nearby property of nearly one hectare, after mangrove plants were cut down there.
