Interesting conference about autism
OFRECEN INTERESANTE CONFERENCIA SOBRE AUTISMO.

On Tuesday morning, and interesting and informative conference was held about the Autism Spectrum, which was organized by the  Centro Especializado en Autismo KODOMO of Playa del Carmen. Assistance and facilities were provided by the Sistema para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia de Isla Mujeres (DIF). KODOMO is a nonprofit civil association dedicated to therapeutic care of children with autism spectrum disorder.
Every April 2,  World Autism Awareness Day is commemorated and was designated as such by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight the need to contribute to improving the quality of life of people with autism , so they can lead  full and rewarding lives as integral members of society.
The conference was held at the Casa de la Cultura and was attended by students of the Middle School, by directors and teachers of the preschool-kindergartens, by DIF personnel, and by parents.
The conference was brought to Isla Mujeres because there is a need for parents and families of autistic children to receive counseling to help the children with their physical and educational development.

Low level of overnight tourism
Escaso turismo de pernocta [+] Ver mas Photo & full article at this link
Personnel with the municipal Department of Tourism report that hotel occupancy is just over 50 percent. Sources with the Port Authority report that neither the ferries nor the tourist boats are arriving with 100 percent capacity, and some of the latter barely have 30 percent. Observers estimate  that less that 10 percent of the ferry passengers from Gran Puerto or the Cancun Hotel Zone have suitcases.
The port is open for general navigation, and the nautical tourism cooperatives, who provide boat tours, reported a low amount of demand for their services in the morning. There was more demand for the catamaran boats that sail from the Cancun Hotel Zone, offering all inclusive tours to the island which include free time for shopping, renting a golf cart, or simply enjoying the beautiful beaches, especially Playa Norte, which has the distinction of being one of the top ten beaches in the world.
Although the port is open, most of the fishermen are staying on land, saying the conditions at sea are currently too risky with large swells, and they complain that their catches are very small when they fish within 20 miles of the island. Weather conditions are expected to be similar on Wednesday, and navigation by small boats should be allowed, with caution.

Starting to lose hope
Comienzan a perder la esperanza. [+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
The wives and relatives of the missing crew of the Anastacia, are becoming discouraged and starting to lose hope. The boat departed on March 30 to go shark fishing, and its whereabouts remain unknown.
The families of the fishermen discussed the last contact from the crew, and it was determined the last known call occurred  at 2:45pm on Thursday, April (sic March) 31, from Jorge de la O Avalos, aka "Pipis", and was reportedly received by a lawyer, but this has not been corroborated. The wives of the crew went to the Public Ministry (Ministerio Público) to request records of the last calls made by the fishermen before contact was lost. They also went to the Naval base to request that the search by Naval personnel not be suspended.
The search for the missing fishermen continues, and has moved to Honduras, where the intention is to rent a plane there, in order to explore the land and sea without any problems. A family member explained that it is not feasible to rent the plane in the United States and fly it to Honduras, because of the high fuel costs, and the complications with landing to refuel. He said, "There are no problems with flying over their airspace, because it is a search, and in such situations authorities are more accommodating, but the plane cannot land to refuel, because then it qualifies as a commercial flight, requiring more permits and paperwork."
He said that financial contributions continue to be received to a greater or lesser degree, and the community has been raising funds in various ways. All funds are being delivered to the Patria & Progreso cooperative, and given directly to the wives of the missing fishermen.
One of the fishermen who has been on site almost continuously since the beginning said, "What the ladies need is more moral support. At first, many people were coming by the cooperative to help the wives and their children, but as the days pass and hopes are becoming lessened, there are also less people arriving, which is discouraging for the women."

Isla Mujeres news briefs
Breves de Isla Mujeres. [+] Ver mas Photo & full article at this link
Isla Mujeres has not dropped its guard in the fight against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, chikungunya, and zika, with personnel of the Health Department fogging/fumigating in the neighborhoods to prevent them from breeding. In total, there are eleven people who have come to the island to take the necessary action toward eradicating this mosquito. Other staff members are responsible for reviewing the ovitraps that are located in different parts of the island.
One brigade is responsible for larval control, checking yards and patios, and advising members of the community how to prevent outbreaks of these three diseases. They walk from house to house, removing and overturning containers filled with water. Another brigade, wearing backpack fogging machines, are fumigating in vacant lots and at houses with excessive vegetation, using large amounts of smoke. They use normal amounts of 'fog' where there is less vegetation.

"Wave" of Cubans
“Oleada” de cubanosv.. [+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link
In a week, two groups of Cubans arrived in Isla Mujeres. The first group of 12 people supposedly spent 16 days aboard a precarious balsero raft, before making landfall in Isla Mujeres. The second group may have been larger, possibly with as many as 30-40 people, of whom 12 were taken into custody by the municipal police. They were taken into custody at the Maritime Terminal on Monday morning at ~4am, while they waited for the first ferry. They claimed their boat capsized near the island. They were in good health. The Navy reported that the undocumented Cubans were transported to Puerto Juarez and turned over to Immigration officials.
There are many conjectures among the islanders, including theories that the Cubans were brought to the island by third parties in a boat which probably dropped them near the coast to swim ashore. They only presented signs of mild dehydration, which was also the case with the first group, although they had allegedly spent 16 days at sea. Neither group appeared burned by salt or sun, as would be expected after spending several days at sea, in bad weather. Some of the men were clean shaven, and other wore beards, and neither appeared neglected. It is considered unusual that the first group showed no signs of malnutrition or weight loss, after allegedly surviving for 16 days on a diet of soda crackers, cookies, and water
