Preventing the spread of red mites in palm trees of Isla Mujeres
PREVIENEN PROPAGACIÓN DEL ÁCARO ROJO EN PALMERAS DE ISLA MUJERES.
On Tuesday, the municipal Department of Ecology began an intense three day campaign treating Isla Mujeres palms with an organic acaricide to kill red mites, aka la Plaga Acaro Rojo (Raoiella indica Hirst). The fumigation began on the palms by the Mundaca Hacienda, then moved to Paseo de los Peces Avenue, and will continue around the isle. The insects are typically found in groups on the undersides of leaves, as well as on the fruits and other parts of the plant. They are totally preventable with knowledge of their biology, modes of dispersion, and methods of control.

Lobster season closed with good statistics
The president of the Fishing Cooperatives Federation of Quintana Roo, Baltazar Gomez Catxin said that this year's season for lobster was better than the previous year, with over 60 tonnes produced this year compared to 50 tonnes of live lobster last year. He said the cooperative "Por la Justicia Social", alone, caught 24 tonnes of live lobster, compared to 16 tonnes the previous year. He said the last three days of the season were very good for that cooperative, with a production of 1.8 tonnes.
City Councilman plans to run for office in next election
On Wednesday, the City Council member in the eighth position, who is president of the Commission of Culture and Ecology, Victor Alfonso Osorio Magana, submitted the official document requesting to participate in the electoral process as part of the PAN-PRD party. In an interview, he said will be seeking the office of representative in the First District, which includes the municipalities of Benito Juarez (Cancun), Puerto Morales, and Lazaro Cardenas, pending approval by the City Council. (I believe the approval by the Council is in respect to the requirement that candidates for political office cannot serve as civil servants while campaigning, so he will be unable to continue serving on the City Council during the electoral process.)

Diabetes clinic at Red Cross facility
Clínica de Diabéticos en la Cruz Roja [+] Ver mas
On Tuesday, medical professionals and volunteers will offer a free clinic for the benefit of residents with diabetes. The event will begin at 9am at the Red Cross facility in La Gloria, offering free blood sugar testing. Diabetics who previously received glucometers will be able obtain more testing strips.
These volunteers, who include foreigners, are working together to provide education, as well as glucometers and supplies, to help Isleno diabetics to better manage their illness. These materials, which are provided for free, were donated and collected by volunteers who regularly visit the island, toward the goal of improving health and health care for the diabetics of Isla Mujeres. The group includes nurses, social workers, paramedics, EMT's and other specialists, many of whom assisted at the Diabetes Clinic held at the Red Cross in September 2015.
There are many diabetics on the island, and health specialists of Isla Mujeres say this includes many people over 40 years of age who live in the colonia Guadalupana. It is estimated that in the general public of adults, about three in ten will eventually suffer from this disease, which requires adhering to dietary restrictions. This can be especially difficult for those with low incomes because "special" foods are expensive. Many diabetics continue drinking soft drinks and eating foods that are not appropriate for them, because they are concerned that changing their diet would involve spending more money, at a time when it is need by family members for transportation, education, and clothing.
