Additional ferry crossings
Navieras implementan rutas extra[+] Ver mas photos & full article at this link
On Saturday, extras crossings were being made by the ferries and the boats providing recreational trips to the island, with a steady stream of passengers arriving throughout the day. Whole families of Mexicans waited in long lines at the Ultramar terminal in Puerto Juarez, as well as at the APIQRoo (Port Authority) terminal in the same town. There were lines of cars at these ferry terminals as well.
In Punta Sam, there were extra crossing for that route, with departures every 90 minutes, bringing vehicles as well as passengers from the hotels in Cancun and the Punta Sam area
About 60 medium and large size boats were making crossings between various point and marinas in the Cancun Hotel Zone, with trimarans, catamarans, and yachts crossing to the island, which could be seen before midday near Playa Norte.
At the time this article was written, nothing unusual had been reported by those providing security, which includes Public Security (police), the Traffic Department (police) on the island as well as the Continental Zone (on the mainland) which was confirmed by the Chief of Police, Joaquin Poot Acosta. A "saldo blanco" (no incidents) was also reported by the lifeguards who are monitoring the beach areas, where there are buoys to prevent risks, and they had been speaking to the boat crews who park near Playa Norte, advising them the buoy line isn't intended for that.
Security is coordinated with the Tourism department, who are part of the holiday Safety Committee, who ensure the safety of swimmers and other visitors, which is coordinated between the Navy, Civil Protection, the Red Cross, and other agencies.
The small tourism boats were only able to offer snorkeling tours in the Bay area, due to the winds, with forecasts indicating these "Surada" winds are likely to continue on Sunday.
Accumulation of trash in the colonia neighborhoods
Se acumula la basura en colonias] Ver mas Photos & full article at this link
Some residents in these neighborhoods are complaining about full trash bins, whose contents sometimes are scattered by dogs and cats, and saying there is a lack of vehicles to transport the trash to the Transfer station in a timely manner during this holiday season. They complain that dogs and cat who live in the streets break into the plastic bags and strew trash about while searching for food. They are also complaining that Trash Transfer facility continues to remain full. Preference appears to be given to picking up trash in the downtown area during this busy Easter season, to preserve a positive image of the island.
The trash collection workers say they are working to fulfill their responsibilities, but there is nothing they can do about the vehicle fleet which can no longer meet the demands and needs to be renewed. About 50 tonnes of trash are being removed daily, but there are delays in collection, which causes complaints from residents. There are preliminary estimates by tourism service providers that there are more people arriving this holiday season than there were last year.
Island is busy with tourists
Turistas recorren la isla[+] Ver mas Photos & full article at this link
For the second day in a row, small boats were restricted to port and the Bay area due to strong "Surada" winds, to the detriment of dive shops and other businesses who provide tours to Isla Contoy and such. The small boats were limited to providing recreational snorkeling activities within the Bay for the second day. This also affected the fishermen, who were preparing for when the wind dies down and they are able to go out, to continue to try to meet the high demand for fish during the Easter holidays.
While visitors could not enjoy many boating activites, the beaches and nearby waters were full of visitors, as were the streets, with people shopping, dining at oceanfront restaurants, and touring in golf carts. The vendors near the beach area were hoping to improve their income during this season, while facing competition from the craft fair from Oaxaca, which remains near the town square for another week. Many of these local merchants have expressed displeasure over the Oaxacan fair, saying they sell similar products, and consider this as unfair competition. They say the local authorities should have taken this into account before authorizing the fair.
Medical Services booth at Maritime Terminal
Módulo de salud en terminal.. [+] Ver mas Photo & full article at this link
A medical services booth has been set up in the Maritime Terminal as part of the measures implemented by the Easter Holiday Security and Safety Operating Committee 2016. The booth operates between 9am and 8pm, to address problems such nausea, dizziness, sprains, heat stroke, and hypertension problems. When necessary, ambulance transfer is available to the hospital where people can be evaluated to see if they need to cross for more specialized care at a Cancun hospital.
Isla Mujeres Community Hospital Director, Dr.Pedro Zapata Loya, who is the supervisor of the medical module, reported that they have provided an average of ten services daily, for a total of 65 consultations. There were 12 patients needing stitches for minor injuries who were referred, 13 injections were given, and five treatments. The consults included people suffering from sore throats, headaches, hypertension, as well as senior citizens suffering from low blood sugar or vertigo. There were no cases of diarrhea, because there are good sanitary conditions concerning food in Isla Mujeres.
Several Mexican tourists requesting services were referred to different medical facilities on the island, including the IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute), the Community Hospital, and individual clinics. The doctor said there are more consults after 2pm when the people begin to return to the mainland. He said the need for this module is expected to be seasonal, and that it will be closed at the end of the season. The seasonal need is coupled with the fact that the previous hospital closed its doors and the new hospital is 4 kilometers away from downtown.
No shortages
With the large volume of people in recent days, there have been no reports of shortages of beverages or foods, nor complaints about bad service. There are booths available to answer complaints in the terminal operated by the Tourism department and by PROFECO, (Consumer Protection), and any reports of robberies can be made to the Public Ministry of Common Law (Ministerio Público de Fuero Común). Tourism service providers are reminded of the importance of the importance of providing customer satisfaction, in order to encourage more tourists to visit throughout the year and to choose the island as the destination for their next vacation.
