Feuding family at Maritime Terminal
Seguridad
Arma familia trifulca en la terminal marítima
0 02 de octubre de 2015 By Carlos Gasca
Personnel from APIQRoo (the Port Authority, who manage the Terminal)and police officers intervened when a family disagreement turned physical at the Maritime Terminal yesterday. The incident occurred when Gaspar Briceno Leon, aka "Chimbo", became physically abusive with his niece, Leyfi Briceno Ruiz, who was taking care of his mother, (her grandmother).
Flor Briceno Leon was buying ferry tickets to go to Cancun to take her mother to Merida for medical attention, when she heard her niece screaming, and ran to assist her, prompting intervention for the APIQRoo staff and the police. Flor Briceno lashed out against her brother, accusing and insulting him
repeatedly for his aggression against his niece, who he was holding by her neck, according to witnesses.
"Chimbo" did not want his mother to go, but his sisters insist that Dona Fidela Leon is in delicate health and needs medical attention. Dona Fidelia Leon was moved to one of the offices in the Terminal, in order to avoid any complications to her health, while tempers were calmed.
The police did not arrest anyone and only sought to mediate the disagreement between the two sides.

Good fishing in front of the Caribbean Malecon
Buena pesca frente al Malecón Caribe.. [+] Ver mas
Fishermen with the cooperative Patria & Progreso were using nets to catch a school of "Sosin" fish, which captured the attention of people along the Caribbean malecon sea walkway yesterday. They surrounded a shoal with two rows of nets, and people enjoyed watching them having a good catch around eight in the morning. A member of the cooperative who was on the shore estimated that this group of fishermen caught about two tons of Sosin, who are caught during this season in certain areas, but it is rare for them to come this close to shore.
Fishermen report that the catches of fish have been good recently, when their attention is usually focused on lobster, whose catches should increase when the northern winds begin in the fall.
Business owners revive old requests
Empresarios reviven añeja demanda.. [+] Ver mas
Business owners, including Enrique Lima Zuro, welcomed the announcement that Isla Mujeres had been given Pueblo Magico designation, and renewed suggestions for projects that were presented to previous administrations. This includes their suggestion to expand the airstrip by 300 meters, to make it 1500 meters long, so it could accommodate aircraft of 50 seats and offer regional service from the southern United States. They say this would not take a large investment, but could require curbing private construction near the runway to meet international standards for civil aviation security. There have been questions about the latest construction near the runway, which is in an area where mangrove plants were allegedly located.
80 baby sea turtles released
Liberadas 80 crías de tortuga marinaVer mas
There will be no more massive public releases of baby turtles, which are done by the staff who are involved in their protection and care. There is federal legislation from SERMANAT (Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources) which prohibits people from touching the hatchlings, explained Raciel Rivero Coba, who heads the Turtle Protection Program. Previously, there were large releases involving children from various schools, and tourists, but this is no longer allowed. There have been over 80,000 hatchlings released, and that figure is expected to exceed 100,000 by the end of the month when the season ends.
