Reforestation continues: In Punta Sam

Farewell to "Solidarity Breaks"?

Projecting good tourism statistics to continue to September

Estiman que las buenas cifras de ocupación turística se extiendan hasta septiembre

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 6 de agosto.-
With a little more than two weeks left to the summer vacation period, the demand for labor from companies serving tourists remains the same or better than at the beginning of the season, according to the leader of the CROC union, Roman Maldonado Euan, who expects this trend to continue for the rest of the month and for September.
He is hoping that the mandatory "Solidarity Breaks" can be eliminated, which workers are subjected to during the slow seasons. He said during September, October, and part of November of each year, tourists become scarcer and therefore workers in hotels and restaurants are laid off during these periods.
Sr Euan Maldonaldo recalled that last year during the months of September, October, and part of November, there was no off season, and therefore the companies providing services to tourists maintained their workforce and did not require Solidarity Day or mandatory time off among the workers. He said the job market in hotels and restaurants has remained strong and there are still vacancies, indicating that this season is extending each year.

Link to DQR article from Sept. 12, 2014 titled "Resenting "Vacas Flacas" (lit "thin cows"/ lean times) Translated excerpt:
Some companies want CROC union workers to take three solidarity break days per fortnight during this off season, which would give most workers a total of five days off during their 15 day work periods. This is not covered under the Labor Laws, but the Solidarity Break Days are used to prevent layoffs, explained the union leader, Román Maldonado Euán. Workers are given vacations and more days off during this slower season, which is expected to improve in November, when the situation usually improves for workers in general. (end paste).

Complaints about work delays

    DENUNCIA

    Demoran los trabajos

0 07 de agosto de 2015 By Carlos Gasca

Tenants of the mercado municipal market downtown, “Javier Rojo Gómez”, are complaining about the delays in the work being done there, noting that sometimes there is only a worker painting or retouching. They say at this rate, it will take another two or three weeks, while the parking lot remains closed to the public. The weeks of delays are affecting the tenants and their customers.
The tenants are complaining about the lack of planning on the project, saying both bathrooms were demolished and neither has been completed. One of the tenants said  he spoke with the construction workers and advised them to finish one bathroom first, so both were not out of service at the same time, but apparently his opinion was not taken into account. .

Vacationers enjoy underwater attractions
Vacacionistas disfrutan atractivos submarinos [+] Ver mas
There is a general 'fleet' of ~60 medium sized boats, each over forty feet long, that move thousands of vacationers across the bay daily, an intensity of activity that is a rarity, according to several local seamen. By 10am, in the National Park of Isla Mujeres-Cancun, there were about 26 catamarans, which each had 50 to 100 vacationers snorkeling at the same time, totaling to an estimated 2000 people.
Groups of swimmers enjoy the attractions near the island of Isla Mujeres, including los Manchones reef, MUSA (the Underwater Sculpture Museum), and  the Cross of the Bay, among others. These boats come from Cancun, with some making two or three trips a day. These massive numbers of tourists, who come to see the colorful fish and the coral, bring very good income for the park, but there is evidence of deterioration as a result of overloading.
The staff of the Tourism department and of PROFECO (Consumer Protection) report a 'saldo blanco' (no incidents). The businesses at the beach report a good level of activity. The Tourist Police and the Lifeguards continue working to provide information for the prevention of accidents. The golf cart rental agencies report high sales. People enjoy traveling around the isle to see attractions at the southern part of the isle, including the Sea Turtle reproduction, the spectacular views of Punta Sur, the re-creation of Mayas at the Mundaca Hacienda, the nautical history at Capitan Dulche's museum, and the Garrafon zipline, as well as swimming peacefully at Playa Norte or the Posada del Mar beach.

New hospital: Between two lagoons
Nuevo hospital, entre dos lagunas .. [+] Ver mas

The new 13 bed hospital, which covers ~3000 square meters and is expected to open this month after four years of delay, is located between two lagoons. This presents a problem, because when it rains heavily these two bodies of water come to unite, so that during a hurricane this could disrupt hospital operations. There is also the problem of  Anopheles mosquitoes which carry diseases such as dengue and malaria.
Municipal and state officials have proposed draining the lagoon or filling it in to rescue the area and turn it into recreational space. According to residents in the area, the neighbors are in favor of filling it in, but there was immediate opposition to the proposal by those who are in favor of conservation. Therefore, they say the three levels of government must resolve this with responsibility and in accordance to the new laws.
These two lagoons, especially the small one, are sources of pollution because unthinking people have dumped trash and timbers, which become homes to dangerous animals like scorpions, cockroaches, snakes and dangerous insects, which was noted on a tour of the area.

Preparing complaint over theft of documents
Alistan demanda por robo de documentos.. [+] Ver mas
Jaime Osorio Sanchez, the president of the Board of Directors of the fishing cooperative "Patria & Progreso", said they are preparing to file a legal complaint with the Pubic Ministry (MP) against the previous Board for failure to provide financial documents. They want to know what has happened to the sello fiscal (lit: the tax stamp), the FIEL/Electronic Signature, and other official documents that are required for the sale of seafood, noting it has been more than a month since the Board changed.
They have requested the documents from the accountants, without success, and the members say they are in full support of the new leadership in this process. Sr. Osorio Sanchez said he went to the Tax Administration Offices (SAT) in Cancun on Tuesday to file taxes, but lacked the requirements for this, which include having the FIEL for the organization.
