Work is being done on the Posada del Mar beach in anticipation of the Blue Flag award event taking place July 2, when the banner will be raised over the beach. This work includes building a lifeguard tower and regular cleaning of the sand. Considerable progress has been made on the tower, and all 33 criteria have been met for this distinctive award, which was judged by the auditors of the Mexican Imstitute of Standardization and Certification. The process was begun in November to certify both beaches, and the white flag award was given to North Beach.

It will be announced at the National Clean Beaches meeting in Cancun on June 25 & 26 that the Blue Flag distinction has been awarded to the Posada del Mar beach. The Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magana Sanchez, who is president of the Clean Beaches Committee of the Maya Riviera, will attend this meeting, the XI Encuentro Nacional de Playas Limpias, as will Governor. Roberto Borge.

Makax lagoon, which is the main center of local marinas and a place of refuge for boats in the event of a hurricane, has an increasing number of abandoned and shipwrecked vessels. It is assumed there is contamination coming from the latrines of the dozens of boats that remain in place and concern about oil spilling from these sunken and semi sunken vessels.

DIF Social Service agency of Isla Mujeres has scheduled two contests in upcoming days, one for senior citizens and one for youths, with the goal of enhancing wellness and healthy living among island families. The titles of the competitions are: "Certamen Abuelita y Abuelito Isla Mujeres 2015” (Grandma & Granpa Contest Isla Mujeres 2015) and “Concurso de Canto Género Urbano Libre” (RAP y REGGAETÓN), a Rap contest.
The first event is a form of recognition and demonstration of our love and respect for the senior citizens of our township. The second event was organized to raise awareness about the fight against mistreatment of women.
The Grandmother & Grandfather Competition is being coordinated by the Senior Citizen's Club (Club de Gente Grande) and will take place at green dome in colonia Salina Chica on Wednesday, June 24 at 7pm. Qualities that are judged include elegance, stage presence, comportment, mastery of the subject, and verbal expression, among others. The state phase will take place at the Convention Center in Cozumel on July 31.
The Rap Contest, “Concurso de Canto Género Urbano Libre” is coordinated by the Comisión de Equidad y Género del Cabildo Isleño (Commission for Gender Equality of the Island City Council), represented by councilwoman Miriam Trejo León. This event aims to allow participants to express a message against the mistreatment of women, by writing a song or improvising lyrics on the issue, and earning points based on the lyrics, rhythm, and stage performance. It will be held on Thursday, June 25 at the Green Dome in colonia Salina Chica at 6:30 pm and participants can register at the municipal DIF office in Colonia La Gloria or call 9990068.

0 23 de junio de 2015Women who love fishing are reportedly ready to participate in the second Women's Fishing Tournament "La Dorada" event, where the number of boats is expected to exceed the 60 vessels who participated last year. The organizing committee explained that exceptional weather is expected for this weekend. The traditional captains dinner will be held on June 26, and the competition will be held on June 27, as a single day. Humberto Moguel, director of Fisheries of the island and a key organizer of this event said that boats will depart promptly at 8am on Saturday, June 27, and the awards will be presented that afternoon. The departure and the awards ceremony will take place at the concrete pier, like the tournament "Cosme Alberto Martinez Magana". The prizes total more than 500,000 pesos.
Only eleven beaches in Mexico have earned the Blue Flag distinction, of which three are in Quintana Roo, in Cancun, but after this award ceremony the total number is expected to be twenty beaches, of which eight would be in Quintana Roo, including one on the island, at the Posada del Mar beach.

Environmentalists and conservation advocates are proposing that the season for watching and swimming with whale sharks be reduced from four to two months, announced the Biosphere Director, Maria del Carmen Garcia Rivas.
Although it is nearly a month since the season began, there are days when no whale sharks are encountered, and the few who are found are besieged by dozens of boats, according to information given to the Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, who agrees with Sra. Garcia Rivas.
The Biosphere Director said the proposal to reduce the season to two months is viable and would benefit all parties involved and they would need to modify the Management Plan and to speak informally to academics. In response to questioning on social media, the official said this proposal would be an improvement, and would require drafting technical and financial proposals, and working with the service providers on the issue.
According to the current Management Plan, the season opens in Aguas Azules on May 15 and in Aguas Verdes (the Biosphere) on June 1 and closes on September 17. However, most of the whale sharks arrive during July and August, therefore this proposal is to concentrate tourism during that 60 day period.
The Harbor Master said the small number of whale sharks has been a problem for the service providers because their customers are pleased when they can observe and swim with the animals, but there are days when they do not see any whale sharks, which has been confirmed by the licensees. There was allegedly an incident last Thursday when only one whale shark was found, a short distance from Cabo Catoche, with 65 boats swirling around it, which is against regulations.

Work on the House of Culture

Work has quietly resumed on the renovation of the Casa de la Cultura, House of Culture, which could be complete in the next month. Workers said the dance studio is nearly ready, as well as the other areas designed to cater to tourists interested in the culture of Isla Mujeres. They just completed the work of installing aluminum doors and windows upstairs, which are anti-hurricane.
This work resumed after a delay of five years, after the construction was begun in 2010 with an investment of 4 million pesos, of which half came from municipal funds and the rest was supplied by the state and federal governments.
Warnings against gifts of "LSD"

Some time ago, a warning letter was written by the PGR (Attorney General's office), and now preschool teachers are advising parents to warn children to avoid strange people who sell or offer "LSD", in the form of stickers with blue stars or colored dots (called Blue Stars, Pink Pyramid, or Window Pane / “Estrellas Azul”, “Pirámide Rosa” & “Ventana de Cristal”) or small pieces of paper similar to postage stamps illustrated with cartoon characters and wrapped in cellophane. The drug can be absorbed thru the skin by handling the paper and causes symptoms that include hallucinations, mood swings, vomiting, uncontrollable laughter, body temperature changes, and memory loss which can persist. Parents of young children are sharing the warning on Facebook.
