ISLA MUJERES, 10 de junio.- .
There is a good chance that Isla Mujeres could receive cruise ships before the end of the current term of state government, said Erce Barron Barrera, Director General of the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (APIQRoo). He said they are working on a final design for the pier, and have made significant progress on the project, including an analysis of economic feasibility. The project will also include environmental studies, considering the seas currents and wind in the proposed area, and the batimetría del suelo.
There are currently four cruise ship docks operating in Quintana Roo; three in Cozumel and one in Mahahual. The state APIQRoo official said that given the need for new routes in the Mexican Caribbean, Isla Mujeres emerged as an idea two years ago, and gained force during the International Convention of Cruise Lines (Convención Internacional de Líneas Navieras) in March, which was attended by the Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez. The idea was proposed, and the cruise companies found it attractive, since they are seeking to create a circuit among the points of attraction that exist in Quintana Roo.
He said, "At that event, the mayor made a presentation on the benefits that exist at this tourism destination for cruise ship passengers." He said that Isla Mujeres offers a wide variety of tourist activities which have attracted the interest of entrepreneurs in Florida. Although many did not know about this destination, they were pleased with the proposal.
He concluded by saying that in October, at the International Convention of Cruise Lines in Cozumel, they will seek to bring cruise company representatives to Isla Mujeres to learn more about this destination.
Over the past decade, there have been proposals to have cruise ships anchor offshore, since our port is not very deep, and to have tenders come to Isla Mujeres. So this pier may be for the tenders? This was done in the past and discontinued after there was an accident in December 1997, when the cruise ship
"Leeward" ran aground on a coral reef while trying to navigate a
shallow channel (and was fined for damaging the reef.)

A productive working meeting was held between the mayor of Isla Mujeres, Agapito Sanchez Magaña, and the head of the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (APIQROO) Ercé Barrón. During the meeting they discussed issues related to efficiency and safety in the maritime terminals operating in the municipality, seeking to improve service for the thousands of tourists who visit the island daily.

The Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco, said hotel occupancy has remained at 45%, despite the weather forecasts for rain, brought by Tropical Wave #4. Although the forecast was for rains and tropical storms to begin yesterday, the day began with sunny weather, with only a smattering of rain over a few hours, and it became cloudy after 3pm. Those who make their living on tourism are hoping the weather conditions are not prolonged for many days, since that would mean major economic losses for them. Entrepreneurs say that hotel occupancy decreases every year during the season of rains and hurricanes.

The threat of rain was noted along the horizon starting around noon, when tourists are visiting the island, and the first drops fell shortly after 4pm, when touristic activities begin to subside as groups return to Cancun. The strong southerly winds prevented small boats from going out to sea. Precipitation was light and did not complicate the movement of tourists, although water pooled in the usual areas, including on parts of Rueda Medina, where there is not an adequate drain to the sea. There was some puddling in the colonias, but traffic resumed when the rain stopped and by 5pm it was merely cloudy.
Heavy rainfall (50-75 mm..2-3 inches) is expected, accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and possibly hail, according to forecasts from CONAGUA (the National Water Commission). The Port Authority recommended precautions because this storm is expected to last through Thursday, due to the entry of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, associated with instability in the Pacific, off Mexico's southern coast.

The festival continues celebrating the fourth anniversary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus church in La Gloria, and a big parade-procession is planned for Saturday morning. (A "Cabalgata" includes horses). It will begin at 10 am by the ferry (probably the car ferry parking lot, since that is where the horses arrive.), going to the "El Pescador" ballpark (in front of Chedraui). This celebration will conclude the annual festival, which has included entertaining cultural and recreational activities for Catholic families.
Women of the church group wore traditional dresses and danced, attracting locals and visitors to the festival site in front of the Church on the street Paseo de Peces, where food stalls and vendors were located.
The fiesta begins "en antes detrar el astro rey" (literally: with the entrance of the sun king) and will last until nearly midnight, with snacks for the visitors and local people to dine upon, and after the colorful activities of popular culture, there will be a Mass.

On its 80th anniversary, AA has 120,000 groups around the world, in different languages, and is present in thousands of prisons, hospitals, and public & private institutions. The organization has agreements with governments, unions, and companies to facilitate assisting people who have drinking problems.
The man who is considered the founder of this movement, Bill. W., died on January 24, 1971, and in his memory a special event is celebrated in Mexico by massive dispersal of information about how this group works. There are also activities each November in memory of the second man who recovered, Dr Bob, who died Nov. 16, 1950. There are a series of activities scheduled every year in Mexico, as well as in Central and South America, to reach all sectors of society, to provide information about the self-financed operations of AA, who decline governmental or private aid, inheritances, and all types of donations.
A woman who works with the organization said, "We have learned that material issues can be a distraction. So we prefer to have no property, and it is better to rent local rooms for meetings. We don't get involved with political debates and we respect the anonymity of the members. We prefer to practice principles that make it possible to stop drinking and to have a happy, productive life."
Mexico's AA organization is considered the second largest worldwide, behind the US-Canada AA. The national headquarters are in Mexico City, and there are more than 15,000 groups and public service centers in Mexico.

The Navy will have a booth showing their diving equipment as well as their rescue program to combat pollution at sea, and a conference that is open to the public entitled "Mangroves".
The CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) will have a exhibition of various ways to produce electricity, aimed at grade school children.
The Human Rights Commission will have a booth and the state Director will inaugurate the fair, with the Mayor.
The labor union CROC is supplying volunteers and had donated ornamental plants, to be used for reforestation.
The DIF is participating and will be giving away discs showing how to conserve water.
Aguakan will have a booth, who often work with NGO's.
The Maritime Terminal is organizing a Drawing Contest titled "A Child's View of Caring for Nature" ( “la mirada de los niños en cuidado de la naturaleza”), and the ferry company will be responsible for the prizes.
The Veterinary Clinic of Isla Mujeres (La Clínica Veterinaria de Isla Mujeres AC) will have animals available for adoption and materials available about pet care.
The Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) will have a booth about the work they do as programs for reproduction and care for sea turtles.
The Municipal Ecology department are actively participating and will have a booth featuring the actions of their agency in favor of ecology.
The NGO Green Patrol/Paturlla Verde will present photographs from 15 years of educational work on the island.
