ISLA MUJERES, 10 de marzo.-

Angry cabbies were about to burn a golf cart for unfair competition

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 9 de marzo.-
Cabbies are angry over the proliferation of irregular golf carts that are being rented to tourists, and were on the verge of burning one of them Monday morning, with the intention of preventing further continuation of these inappropriate practices. The drivers say they are tired of nearly every rental agency putting carts on the roads that are unmarked, lack a number, don't have a logo, and what is worse, are not safe for the tourists who rent them. They argued that these practices directly affect their income, while the owners of the rental agencies are putting more units into circulation without meeting these requirements.
Because of this, the cabbies stopped a golf cart on the road in Sac Bajo and nearly burned it; if it were not for the tourists aboard and the presence of one of the inspectors with the Department of Transport and Communication of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (SINTRA).
The leader of the taxi union, Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez said it is urgent that the SINTRA delegate on Isla Mujeres be changed, and that  Guillermo García Padilla leaves, because he is not fulfilling his duties, according to the union leader. He also said that a meeting with the Mayor is needed, to put this issue in order, because otherwise they will take more drastic measures and there could be more incidents.
In addition, he said it is important that the Traffic officers do their job and impound irregular units that are circulating without license plates. He said it is also important that the rental agencies do not decieve tourists by renting units without insurance, and the the tourists are responsible for paying.

Our friend, tourist Lisa Scheid, sent us the following message, and we thank everyone for their support in finding her passport.

Thank you for the help that was given to me. I am very grateful for the assistance. It is practically a miracle, my bag has returned. On Sunday, a life guard came to find me, announcing that a female vendor had found my bag among some bushes where she stashes the wood for her table (upon which she puts the things she sells). She noticed an itinerary in the bag with the name of the hotel where I was staying. She asked the lifeguard to help her find me. And that is how it happened that I regained my bag with my passport. (all that was missing was some cosmetics and medications). She would not allow me to give her money as a reward, she just said that she was very happy that I had my passport and bag. I had to insist that she accept a reward.
Obviously there are very good people in Isla Mujeres. You all, the lifeguard who came for me, and the woman vendor....
I am writing this from here in Atlanta Georgia, US. I just arrived.
Thank you again,
Best Regards,
 Lisa Scheid

Gracias nuevamente,
Saludos cordiales,
Lisa Scheid
