Whale shark tour boat stolen: Found burgled, without engines
Isla Mujeres. – Perdidas por más 450 mil pesos,...
tvislamujeres.com.mx
The loss, valued at over 450,000 pesos was reported yesterday by Martin Trejo Manzano, better known as "Gato", after their boat used for whale shark tours, suffered the theft of two of its engines. He explained the boat is always anchored near the whale shark statue, and they had never had any problems until yesterday. He said they have used that anchorage for eight years with no thefts of parts or vessels.
They noticed the boat was missing at dawn, and reported it to the Harbor Master. It was found hours later, after noon, abandoned near an area of Isla Blanca, at the mainland, without its two 150hp outboard engines. The boat had been burgled and its engines stolen, but fortunately no attempt was made to sink it, as has happened in many cases.
Fortunately, the Whale Shark season is currently over. They will have to find a way to acquire a new engine for the boat. When inspecting the boat, it was noted that the motor was professionally removed and the cables were cut to avoid wasting time. It is important to note that this is not the first time this has happened, and there have been other cases, but in most of them a complaint was not filed, because it would be virtually impossible to identify their motors. (Sr. Trejo is associated with Minino's restaurant, involved with baseball, and recently was in the news helping return a tourist's purse.)

Lane closures & street repair during March
The Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, has instructed the Department of Public works to begin work immediately on repaving and patching the street prolongation Juarez (aka prolongation Aeropuerto or Martinez Ross Ave.). The work will take place on the section from the monument to Benito Juarez (at the start of Juarez avenue) southward to the tower & guardhouse of the airport.
The work will begin Thursday March 5 (today) and conclude in 30 days, with lane closures beginning on Monday, and caution is requested. Your understanding is requested that these repairs are being done for the benefit and safety of the residents and tourists of Isla Mujeres.
Wednesday morning a meeting was held betwen the Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez and owners of golf cart rental agencies to reorganize and dignify this vital activity.
The meeting took place at the City Hall and included the director of tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez, and the City General Secretary, Cesar Poot Perez. The talks opened in an atmosphere of respect and willingness; seeking what is best for everyone and their families, to benefit this tourist destination. The main objective of the meeting is to take the first steps toward reorganization and regularization of this important activity in Isla Mujeres. They want to prevent unfair competition and to operate with dignity and within the framework of the regulations.
The officials offered the rental agency proprietors a local store and a booth in the modern Maritime Terminal, at reasonable prices, where they can offer their cart rental services in an orderly, dignified, and safe manner.
They are seeking to regulate this activity to improve the tourism image and to give appropriate attention to the visitors, with a general reorganization of the selling of these services. Undoubtedly, the use of golf carts throughout the island is a tourist attraction, and in some ways is part of the folk scene and the object of the meeting is precisely to take care of the cultural value of the island.
Another fundamental issue with tourism preferences internationally is safety, said Mayor Agapito Magana, adding that we must ensure the safety of those who rent vehicles, and this is only possible if all the permits are in order and operating rules are met.
This reorganization and regulation, that is beginning with this meeting, will help complete the requirements needed to include Isla Mujeres in Pueblos Magicos de Mexico, which has benefits for tourism destinations.
The rental agency proprietors expressed their willingness to work in coordination with the authorities and to operate their businesses in a safe and orderly manner for the benefit of all.

When he was running for Mayor, Agapito Magana offered to help regularize colonia Guadalupana, where more than 200 families need basic services like electricity, drainage, and paved streets. Next month they will complete 10 years of occupation of more than two acres of private land on the northern boundary of hacienda Mundaca that was abandoned and to date the owners have not appeared. The community has water service to each of the homes, and they are recognized by the Voters Institute (INE) who issue credentials to qualifying voters who live there.
Although the lots are small at 7m by 14, and they are smaller than those issued by the State of Quintana Roo, residents say they are large enough for their families to live there. Many lots have masonry, but the majority are still constructed from flimsy materials.

With a lack of funding available for cultural activities, the 498th anniversary celebration of the discovery of Isla Mujeres by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba only included civil ceremonies in the schools. One such event took place at the high school, Colegio Bachilleres, and included public servants.
Under previous administrations the general public was included in these celebrations. Hundreds of tourists spend their winters in Isla Mujeres and look forward to enjoyable activities on weekends, and share them with their friends via social networks.
Isla Mujeres has been 'twinned' (a sister city) with many cities including: 1998 with Martín, in la Provincia de Matanzas, Cuba; La Habana Vieja; in 2001, with Viña del Mar, Chile; and Mar de Plata, Argentina. In 2009, with Partido de Lanús, Ciudad de Chascomús, Ciudad de San Juan, Florencio Varela (Buenos Aires) and Partido de Almirante Brown, Argentina; in 2010, Quilmes (Buenos Aires), Argentina; in 2012 San Petersburgo, Florida; and in 2014 with Pensacola, Florida.

Useful bridge closed due to partisan issues

Residents are annoyed that the gate is closed and locked to prevent passage onto the bridge over Salina Grande, which prevents residents from using it as a shortcut to the grocery store, among other places. The bridge was built during the administration of former Mayor, Hugo Sanchez Montalvo, of the PAN party, and during his time there was never any impediment to pedestrians crossing the salina lake from the walkway-path to the small botanical garden on the other side. But shortly after Agapito Magaña Sanchez became Mayor, it was decided to place a metal fence in the space between the walking path at the Bicentennial Park and at the bridge area a gate was installed, which always remains closed.
On Tuesday morning, a pair of middle aged foreign tourists were observed, who walked up the walkway-ramp to the bridge, and when they found the gate closed, the woman attempted to climb over the gatepost, risking her safety.
A resident said she had heard it was closed off for safety reasons or to prevent vandalism, but she said the bridge appears strong and safe, and suggested that they could close the gate at 10pm, and then people who want to go to the grocery store wouldn't have to walk all the way around the park.
Helping fishermen seek assistance

A meeting was held Tuesday with the director General of Fishing and Aguaculture, Martin Dominguez Viveros, with representatives of the fishing industry to address their concerns. The deadline for several federal programs is March 15, and the window of the Coejercicio closes on the 31st, which manages federal and state aid to assist fishermen.Since it is complicated for the fishermen of Isla Mujeres to go to Chetumal to complete the forms and applications and present their documents, officials are coming to the island to assist them. These programs include support for replacement of boats, engines, and fishing gear, technical training, and productive infrastructure. The officials want to ensure that the fishermen do not miss out on benefits because of the missing the deadlines.
The fishermen are also concerned about the state of some of the huts used at the fishing camp on Isla Contoy, used when they are capturing lobster. The official said he will need to gather more information about what maintenance is needed and whether to plan for demolition and replacement with new ones.
