Students arriving late and sleepy
Alumnos adormilados y retrasados[+] Ver mas
Although the time of entrance was changed by half an hour for primary school students, and they are being given a ten minute grace period, the children are waking up when it is still dark and some are arriving late and sleepy. It will take some days for them to adjust to the time change. The schools will continue to maintain this 10 minute grace period before closing the gates for at least 15 days until the children adjust to the new schedule. Middle school and high school students are starting school when it is still dark.
Registration for the next school year (2015-2016) was carried out on February 3rd quietly, without long lines of parents waiting to get a document, which were delivered to a designated area for this purpose at the school Julio Sauri Espinosa. This saved parents from having to go to the Ministry of Education and Culture in Cancun. This facilitated the process for students moving from kindergarten to primary school. Students who are newly arrived to Isla Mujeres must first visit the Secretary of Education and Culture for registration and then bring that document to the school to confirm the registration.

Former Councilman Hugo Ravel Magana complained that current officials are tolerating problems such as obstacles on the sidewalks downtown that cause pedestrians to walk in the streets. These obstacles include tables and chairs, items for sale, golf carts, and other parked vehicles. He said when he was alderman during the administration of Fidel Villanueva Madrid, it was required that golf carts remain within the businesses in order to not affect the roads. He said when Jorge Martinez Pena was in office, only two carts could remain on the street, but that did not last long, and now there are too many and they are parked in spaces that are supposed to be exclusively for passenger loading and unloading, and causing clogging of traffic and sidewalks.
He also complained about lack of punishment for removal of mangroves, and invasions into the federal zone areas, including construction on the seawall malecon.

New Director at General Hospital
Relevo en el Hospital Integral[+] Ver mas
The General Hospital will have a new Director beginning Friday, February 6, when orthopedic doctor Pedro Zapata will replace Dr David Valenzo Loera, who was head of the hospital for four years. There will be a one week period for the handover, before Dr. Valenzo moves to a new position. Dr Zapata is an orthopedic surgeon with extensive experience in administrative matters.
When Dr. Valenzo assumed his position four years ago, there were around 16,000 visits yearly which has since increased to more than 40,000, in addition to increased surgical procedures and specialists consultations. The number of people channeled to Cancun decreased by 15-20 percent. Between 2013 and 2014, the number of consults grew by 12%, and increase of about 4000 more consultations.
At the end of 2013 there had been 37,000 and at the end of 2014 there were nearly 41,000 consults. Regarding births, there were 45 more, compared to 2013, for a total of nearly 200 births attended to, including both normal deliveries and Caesarean sections. Dr Valenzo said he arrived not knowing anyone and is departing with many friends, and a great sense of satisfaction for the work he has done in Isla Mujeres. He thanked the people of the island for the trust the put in him.
