ISLA MUJERES, 2 de junio.-
Leer más...The crew of the sailboat "Zao" suffered a failure of their propulsion system when they were about six kilometers from Isla Contoy. The boat captain, who is apparently from Argentina, contacted the port of Isla Holbox and was connected with the Port of Isla Mujeres. He was able to continue under sail, and was requesting information about the locations of the reefs. The Harbor Master said apparently the boat had previously been to the island, according to the logbook.

Leer más... The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil explained there is a low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico that they are monitoring because it has a 30% chance of developing in to a tropical phenomenon which could threaten Isla Mujeres and Cancun. Due to winds gusting to 45 km/hr and constant rains for the past two days, the port has been closed since Sunday at 1pm. Today (the 2nd) with only sporadic rains, navigation by small boats was allowed to the area of El Farito and the lagoon area, with nautical tourism in mind. The effects of this low pressure system will be felt first in the Gulf states, such as Campeche, Tabasco, and Veracruz. Meanwhile it is noted that the forecast for Isla Mujeres is partly cloudy with moderate rainfall.

De Protección Civil, ante accidente marino

ISLA MUJERES, 1 de junio.-
Leer más...Due to the unfortunate sinking of the boat "Bandolera del Mar" of the cooperative "OPCA of Puerto Juarez", the Navy and Civil Protection department of Isla Mujeres were called and responded immediately. They responded in a timely manner and fortunately no lives were lost and the passengers were given attention in Isla Mujeres and in Cancun. The accident was caused by bad weather and recklessness. The accident occurred off the coast near the archaeological site of "El Meco".
Twelve tourists from Puebla and Morelia were rescued unharmed, by navy personnel, coincidentally it was on the day when Naval personnel were receiving recognition for this sort of heroism.
Despite bad weather conditions and the relevant recommendations, the
Bandolera del Mar boat sailed from Puerto Juarez at 1:23pm with Isla
Mujeres as its destination. The City government said it was fortunate
that no lives were lost and they urged the nautical service providers to
observe and respect the information given by the authorities of Civil
Protecion.
On fb today...from Betsy Snider....
"Here's my public service announcement for the day. If you are planning to go out on a boat, take a look at the flags at the end of the pier where the old ferry is, right beside the Ultramar. If you see Yellow AND Blue flags flying, it means the harbor is closed to small craft. Don't risk it."
