The first State Council of Young Environmentalists will be held in Isla Mujeres on June 4th & 5th with an invitation sent to all the other municipalities of the state to send two representatives from their high school, with a counselor. So far five municipalities have confirmed their participation." The primary goal is to expose students to environmental issues in their municipality and to work together to propose possible solutions, and for the exchange of information among the participants ," said Christina Medina, municipal director of Ecology in Isla Mujeres.
A parade will take place, with the environment as its theme, with young people from the various municipalities participating, with 'uniforms' and carrying  banners representing their place of origin.
The municipal director of ecology said they have also begun preparations for the celebration of World Environment Day, on June 5, in coordination with the State Ministry of Ecology and Environment (SEMA).

The intense rain that occurred Saturday night, Sunday afternoon, and during the day on Monday halted activities on the island. There was some severe flooding at various points, and the most affected was Hidalgo avenue, as usual where dozens of shops selling crafts were at risk of suffering losses of merchandise. The workers, managers, and administrators were working from an early hour to prevent the accumulation of rain water and to keep it from entering their buildings. Families in various neighborhoods requested intervention by personnel of Civil Protection to clear the storm sewers. There was flooding of the sports fields, where the accumulated water is expected to prevent activities there tomorrow. The police blocked traffic by the soccer field in the vicinity of the police station for several hours, until the water stopped draining. There were also patrols in the area in colonia Salinas known as "El Acapulquito" to avoid an accident where a large puddle forms.

Following the success of the oldest and traditional tournament "Cosme A Martinez Magana", Isla Mujeres is preparing for another Grand Slam event with the First Women's International Fishing Tournament "La Dorada de Caribe" (~The Golden Treasure of the Caribbean). This event will take place Saturday, June 14, with the captain's dinner the evening before. In addition to the prizes for the winning boats, the mayor proposed that the winner be named as a Distinguished Citizen at an official session of the City Council, on the anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres. In conjunction with the tournament, there will be musical events and a contest for the "Golden Boy" and "Golden Girl" (la chica dorada y el chico dorado).

Transferring inmates of Isla Mujeres

One female inmate and 17 male inmates were transferred at 10am from the municipal jail, with assistance from officers of the State Police, and the Navy. They are being taken to the city jail in Playa del Carmen, in the neighboring municipality of Solidaridad for 45 days, and were moved in vehicles via the ferry that goes to Punta Sam.
The Police Chief, Joaquin Acosta Poot explained that this is a temporary measure while improvements are made to the building.. The transfer took place under heavy security, and went mostly unnoticed by the islanders, due to the rain.

Hurricane shelters are ready for families

The shelters are ready if they are needed, and an invitation was extended to residents of the irregular colonia of Guadalulpana, in case they needed shelter from rain or flooding, since many live in flimsy homes. Members of the Navy made patrols and were monitoring for damage in the irregular colonia Guadalupania, and were ready to assist if anyone need shelter from the rain and flooding.  City official, Cesar Poot said the municipal employees have been following the mayor's instructions for the past two days and working proactively at areas that are known to flood. A tour was made and it was seen that city crews were clearing storm drains and it was reported that the two pumps to remove water were working without a hitch.

Rain cut internet service

Due to heavy rains that occurred during four days, internet service was down at times, and would return and go down again. This was mostly noted at the southern part of the isle, including  la colonia La Gloria, Cañotal, Prolongación la Gloria, Sac-Bajo, and the area around Punta Sur. Sra Maricruz Navarrete said she has gone three days without internet in Sac Bajo, with a bad cable TV signal.

The pumps were working at an early hour, but unfortunately the amount of water exceeded the pumping capacity, causing flooding in the commercial area of Hidalgo Avenue and Abasolo street. The heavy precipitation began at 8:20am when many of the businesses were open, causing damage to some goods when it rose over 40 centimeters in some areas. The rains are a remnant of cold front #55 which has affected the economy of the local businesses.
