There will be a festival in the town square on May 31st, beginning at 7pm, with a presentation of grupos artisticos, and a photographic exhibition, as well as the coronation of the queen of the festivities. On June 1, when the wreath is laid on the sea in memory of those who died in the line of duty, there will be boats available for islanders to participate in the event, at the concrete pier at 10:30am. There will be recreational activities for the whole family at the Posada beach, starting at 12:30pm. In Isla Mujeres, Dia de la Marina, June 1st, is an important day because the Naval base on the island is an important part of the community, providing service in environmental contingencies (storms & hurricanes), as well as many other activities which assist the municipal authorities.

Organizan festival del tiburón ballena
0 28 de mayo de 2014The municipal Department of Tourism, in coordination with the municipal Department of Culture, are organizing the Whale Shark Festival, which is expected to attract tourism. Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco, director of Tourism, said that this annual Festival celebrating the world's largest fish will begin on July 20th, but unlike previous years when it took place on a weekend, this year the event will last for a week. There will be cultural and artistic activities, as well as the coronation of a queen/ambassador. There will be contests, a parade with floats, lectures about whale sharks, and a group of foreigners are painting murals at several strategic points in Isla Mujeres. There will be sand sculpture competitions at the beach, and activities at the Town Square. It is possible that there may be a guest invited as the Celebrity Ambassador, but this is being analyzed.

Fiscalización
Fines by PROFECO total over 3 million pesos
Multas de Profeco podrían superar los 3 MDP
0 28 de mayo de 2014During three days of inspections by PROFECO, the Federal Consumer Protection agency, they reviewed 14 businesses, of which only one was found to be following all of the rules. The rest were given sanctions that can range between 640 pesos and 3 million pesos. There were 20 inspections intended, but the other six businesses were closed, and it is presumed that they were alerted by a rumor. Among those that did not pass inspection, there were signs posted advising of the different irregularities that were encountered, and in some cases there was merchandise that was impounded. Now there will be administrative procedures that could last between one and two weeks, with the possibilities of a second inspection later. It there is recidivism, the fine could increase and reach even more than three million pesos. Mitigating circumstances will be considered such as the willingness of the merchant to remedy the problem.
Por Carlos Gasca> Quequi .- Fueron 14 negocios inspeccionados y sólo uno logro salir libre de sanciones.

Congress of young environmentalists from around the state
Congreso estatal de jóvenes ambientalistas[+] Ver mas
Of the ten municipalities in the state, seven have already confirmed that they will be sending young environmentalists to the conference being held in Isla Mujeres on June 4th & 5th. The deadline for registration is next Monday. The municipalities who have not yet registered are Cozumel, Lazaro Cardenas, and Othon P Blanco.
Two middle school students with an adviser will represent their municipality, and raise issues that are specific to their community. Each delegation will present a submission about an environmental problem in their municipality, and on the second day there will be proposals for monitoring and solving the problem.
The municipality of Isla Mujeres is providing lodging and meals, while travel costs are the responsibility of their municipal government. There are plans to hold a parade with an environmental theme.
Possible topics for the ten delegations to discuss concerning Isla Mujeres could include that Salina Grande, Makax Lagoon, and Chcmuchmuch Lagoon all need attention, or the concerns about whale sharks being 'harassed' by dozens of boats of licensees carrying tourists between May and September.
