Leer más...Isla Mujeres is actively participating in the National Days of Accreditation on May 23, 24, & 25, which is sponsored by the National Institute for Adult Education. On the island, on Saturday 24th from 9am to 2pm, any adults who have not completed their primary or secondary education can take an equivalency exam, and receive a certificate of completion of studies. The exams a being given at the community plaza "4 de Marzo" which is next to the basketball court in colonia La Gloria, and are being given by the State Institute for the Education of Youth and Adults of Quintana Roo. The article explains what documents are required & invites islanders to take advantage of this opportunity which can improve their living conditions and job opportunities.

Thursday the mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, re-inaugurated the "Futbol Rapido" soccer field and the open air gym in La Gloria, which had been upgraded with an investment of 2,861,781 pesos. The improvements included installation of a chain link fence, synthetic turf, new bleachers, a covered area for the players, new gate, latex paint, as well as the installation of three elliptical treadmills, four pieces of equipment that exercise waists, three double rowing machines, and four machines for abdominal muscles. (I think... tres caminadoras elíptica, cuatro ejercitadores de cintura, tres remos dobles y cuatro equipos para abdominales.)
You may recall that recently the mayor also reopened the downtown basketball court "Jose del Carmen Pastrana" after its renovation. This is part of a comprehensive program of the municipal government of Isla Mujeres with the objective that the residents of Isla Mujeres can count on having recreational areas that benefit their health, and promote social cohesion and integration of the community.

Leer más...On Friday, the Grey team from the high school Colegio Bachilleres of Isla Mujeres won the sixth edition of the Rally del Agua, sponsored by the company Aguakan. The event began at 7:30am with 75 participants, in groups of five, taking on mental and physical tests at each station around the island, to earn points, while demonstrating what they had learned on topics such as the water cycle, how this vital fluid reaches their homes, treatment of wastewater, and other actions done by Aguakan to help protect our environment. They also learned about the history of Isla Mujeres.
Each member of the winning team received a laptop, and they were: Brayan Gerardo Nahuat Lavadores, Jabes Antonio González Díaz, Carlos Pool Quijano, Asaf David Pech Rosales y Abdiel Hazael Chim Moo. Members of the second place teams won tablets and members of the third place teams were each given iPods.. The event was organized by Aguakan, who provide potable water and wastewater services in Isla Mujeres and Benito Juarez, and with the City of Isla Mujeres, and the Scouts del Caribe.

Leer más...The sports fields that were most affected by the heavy rains in recent days were the baseball field and the futbol rapido soccer field in colonia Salinas. The baseball field, Ariel P Magana, remains flooded, because it seems the drainage system is clogged or the grates are blocked or in poor shape. At sunrise, Hidalgo was dry, which had been one of the areas most affected, as often happens. Puddles remained in front of Telegrafos de Mexico for a few days after the rain.

Leer más...Sports activities will be included in the events for Dia de la Marina on June 1st, with a baseball tournament beginning on Saturday, May 31st and the finals on June 1st. On Saturday there will also be a 15 kilometer foot race around the entire island. There will be a "lightening" basketball tournament (torneo relámpago de básquetbol) with participation by the fishing cooperatives and the tourism serviced cooperatives, and will not include any nonmembers. On Sunday, June 1st there will be a handball tournament on the Posada beach, beginning at 8am. At 10am on Sunday, there will be a woman's softball game at the Children's Baseball Field. Activities on June first will include the official ceremony at the Naval base, and subsequent placement of the wreath in the Isla Mujeres Bay, in the presence of municipal authorities from Benito Juarez (Cancun) and Isla Mujeres. (I will add this info to the events calendar below manana.)

Leer más...Three turtle nests were found before the official start of the sea turtle nesting season on May 15th. With assistance from personnel from Dolphin Discovery, the municipal Ecology department, and ZOFEMAT the beach in front of colonia Guadalupana was cleaned, which is an important turtle nesting beach. Litter was removed and stones were piled to form a sort of fence to define the area and provide more security for the nesting turtles.
Night tours are being performed on the beaches on the Caribbean side of the island, and next week continuous monitoring will begin in the area.So far about 250 eggs have been rescued and are being incubated at the Tortugranja facilities, from loggerhead and hawksbill turtles.
Members of the Committee to Protect Sea Turtles received packets of materials and equipment to assist them in their protective tasks, in which they are joined by members of various civic organizations, schools, and volunteers who share the same goal: Caring for and protecting animals that are helpless and endangered.
During the turtle protection season, banners, posters, and brochures will be distributed against the sale and consumption of eggs or any other products from sea turtles, with an invitation to make a complaint against any one who is surprised while committing an illegal act, and to advise someone if a nest is found.

Rafael Burgos Ríos, wants authorities, including PROFEPA (Environmental Protection Agency), to intervene because his brothers have a workshop on adjacent land, and he says fiberglass particles are contaminating his restaurant with the breezes. He says his brothers' repairing of vessels is a law violation, and that they have broken all agreements about not causing discomfort to his property, which is next to theirs. He says for years he has had a lawsuit against Nicanor Burgos Ríos and Álvaro Burgos Ríos, and he claims they are trying to take away his share.

0 21 de mayo de 2014 The Consumer Protection Agency, PROFECO, visited several businesses in Isla Mujeres, after having received complaints of abuses in the sales on handicrafts. More than 50 establishments were inspected yesterday, with several stores having irregularities in their merchandise displays.
The first establishment received an immobilization of a large part of their merchandise. The officials took over two hours at "International Jewels", located downtown, for violations of the laws Norma Oficial Mexicana 033 and 010, for not having prices in plain view, for lacking equipment for weighing items they sell, and for not giving receipts. (no extiende notas). (The PROFEPA inspectors were making inspections on Hidalgo this morning...Thursday.)

The head of the municipal Civil Protection Agency appealed to residents to keep the areas in front of their houses clean and not to leave out garbage that could clog storm drains. He said a great deal of the flooding could be avoided with better awareness about waste management.
Garbage that is left in the streets is carried by the rainwater and ends up clogging the pipes of the storm drains, which causes serious flooding. He said this problem always occurs at the intersection of Abasolo Avenue and Hidalgo, where the ground is low and the most rainwater concentrates, and is compounded by garbage that covers the drains. He said for several days a crew of workers have been responsible for maintaining these drains, but it is necessary for the residents to contribute to the cleaning of the streets.
Regarding the level of the salinas, the officials said it has received attention to prevent them from overflowing and causing damage in neighboring areas.

Everything returned to normal in Isla Mujeres after torrential rains paralyzed the touristic and recreational activities. When the rain stopped and the sun came out, tourists did not wait to hit the streets and beaches. The port was opened to all types of navigation and tourist activity there was reactivated including boating tours, fishing and diving tours, among others, with large groups of visitors, especially during peak hours.

The mercado is at its worst with many premises not open due to decreasing sales, which were affected by the arrival of department stores. The Tax Reform was the coup de grace with the collection of taxes, and requirements to register with the Hacienda, for many discouraged tenants; unless they get a plan from the municipal government for this year, involving property signage, painting, and rehabilitation of the bathrooms, to attract tourists.
With a lack of maintenance of the bathrooms for public use and a lack of a variety of products, few visitors are coming to the mercado to shop. Tenants are under capitalized and concerned about a recent threat by the municipal government to collect back rent and other payments. They said the tenants of the downtown mercado face similar problems.
