European tourists arriving
Turismo
Repunta la llegada de europeos

Nautical tourism service providers took advantage of the good weather
to provide tours, a situation that has given respite to the economy.
Hotel occupancy improved significantly during the weekend, with the
improved weather, which was favorable for aquatic activities. The seamen
of Isla Mujeres who have received their whale shark permits commented
that hurricane season officially starts on June 1, but that this is no
cause for concern or unnecessary alarm for tourism. They are now seeking
to follow up on agreements made during the recent Tianguis Turistico of
Mexico, and they recognize that activities improve gradually. An
increase in European visitors has been reported. The whale shark tour providers said in spite of the new policies of whale shark sighting management plan, they plan to make the best of the season which only lasts four months.
Por Carlos Gasca > Quequi .- Las condiciones climatológicas contribuyeron a la notable mejoría que registró la ocupación hotelera durante el fin de semana.

Sinking caused by lack of ballast
Falta de lastre, causa del hundimientoVer mas
This has the same information as previously translated, noting that the crew allegedly neglected to fill the shrimping boat Fibesco 137 with enough fuel to provide ballast, which contained 100 liters when it should have had about 50 m3 of diesel, and it appears that this is one of the most important factors that caused it to capsize. Four of the five crew members escaped after it suddenly heeled over, went sideways, and sank within minutes, but the body of the fifth crewman, Rafael Ramirez Poot, was found in the bunk area of one of the cabins. It is unknown why he was unable to escape. The Port Authority took the initial statements from the crew, which are turned over to the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine.
Punished: The Makax lagoon
Castigado, el cuerpo lagunar de la Makax[+] Ver mas
There was a clean up on Sunday by dozens of young people over a mile long area, in Sac Bajo. This was part of a campaign organized by a TV network, coordinated by the municipal Ecology Department and municipal Youth Agency. A considerable amount of trash was removed from this lagoon which is considered a "nursery" for aquatic life. The reporter says the three levels of governmental authorities have not been effective at protecting this important area of our environment. The municipal director of the Ecology Department, Cristina Medina, recently announced her intention to follow up on a two decade old plan within this year which proposes to declare this a reserve, to ensure its care and protection.
