It appears the project of removing the overhead wires and their poles downtown on Rueda Medina, will resume soon.  A group of workers inspected the work previously done the main street, and were comparing their plans with what they observed. One of the workers explained that they will report the results of their inspection to the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission), because work is scheduled to begin soon, which will improve the image of the island. The lines will be placed underground.

Business improved for the boat tours
“Respiro” económico para lancheros[+] Ver mas
Nautical tour providers experience an increased demand for their services on Tuesday, after the weather improved, prompting the arrival of hundreds of tourists. More than six boats departed which was considerable since there are days when only two boats go out, or days when there are no tours. The boats were carrying 10 to 15 people, depending on capacity, most of whom were domestic tourists. The tours included the sale of barbecued fish / tikinxik, in addition to visiting the main beaches and attractions.  Tourists were seen shopping and patronizing restaurants and bars, and the best turnout was at the beaches of the Posada and Punta Norte, where hundreds of visitors enjoyed the warm weather.

Problem with the Hyperbaric Chamber
Fallos en la Cámara Hiperbárica[+] Ver mas
Although two specialists have been hired to operate the Hyperbaric Chamber, after two years of inactivity it is not yet operational because of a failure of one of the "empaques" of the machine, which is probably a gasket. It is expected to be ready on Wednesday or Thursday. (It is used to treat decompression illness, which is a risk for the fishermen diving for lobster, whose season is over at the end of February.)

Estudio revela que los tacos al pastor son más nutritivos que barras de fibra

 tacos-al-pastor
www.sopitas.com Una razón más para optar por lo tradicional, cuando se trata de un simple antojito.
 "Another reason to opt for the traditional, when you want a simple snack"
This article in Spanish says.....
      A study by Department of Chemical, Environmental, & Gastronomic Engineering at the Universidad del las Americas en Puebla (UDLAP) determined you can eat three tacos al pastor or four flautas of cochinita pibil without feeling guilty or dashing to the gym.
    Orders of each food were collected, put through a blender, and then dried and analyzed.The  tacos al pastor were 12% fat, 21% protein, 24% carbs, while flautas of cochinia pibil were 12% fat, 4% protein, and 41% carbs.  The tacos and flautas contained similar amounts of moisture (tacos 42% and  flautas 43%).
        To the researchers, these are acceptable statistics, since the amount of fat is lower than foods such as chips, donuts, and even some energy bars, which can contain up to 30% fat. It is noted that the tacos al pastor could be considered an energy food, and that you should control your daily intake of  food for a healthy diet.

From sharp burs and dreadlocks) mani-pedi, flea and tick treatment, worm treatment, ear mite treatment, treatments for wounds from the burs and the living on the street and lots of TLC. He was such a friendly pup-He went back to Punta Sur and lucked out and got to spend two nights at Marla and Javi's place so he could recover-and they were amazingly able to find him home with someone on Punta Sur. He now has horses and a new chocolate lab friend in his new home. Check out his After Photo. What a lucky guy!!! Gold star to everyone who helped and as always Eileen Regn & Alison Sawyer Current!

Maya of the Yucatan:  Surrounded by Spirits

Bribing the Grim Reaper....

Here is an account (I edited) from Brinton, Daniel Garrison. (2013). pp. 168-9. Essays of an Americanist. Hong Kong: Forgotten Books. (Original work published 1890)
         A singular ceremony is at times performed to prevent the death of those who are sick. The dreaded being who in Medieval l symbolism was represented by a skeleton, (the Grim Reaper) is known to the Mayas as Y^l^n (Yum) Cimil, Lord of Death. He lurked around a house where  a person is ill, ready to enter and carry off their life when there is an opportunity.
       He was, however, willing to accept something in lieu thereof, and to bring about this result the natives perform the rite called kex, or "barter." They hang jars and nets containing food and drink on the trees around the house, repeating certain invocations, and they believe that often the Lord of Death will be satisfied with these, and thus allow the invalid to recover.

The Friendly Balams
  p 169& 170, 1890 (2013) edited,  same source:
      To the Maya, the woods, the air, and the darkness are filled with mysterious beings who are always ready to do him injury or service, and the greater number are malevolent sprites.  Among the kind spirits are the Balams, who are very ancient men that oversee and guard the towns. One stands north of the town, a second south, a third east, and the fourth to the west. They are usually not visible during the day, and when one is seen, it is a sign of approaching illness.
      At night the Balams are awake and vigilant, and may prevent bad events from befalling the village, such as violent rains, tornadoes, and pestilential diseases. They summon each other by a loud, shrill whistle; and they fly through the air with the swiftness of a bird, although they do not have wings. Occasionally they have desperate conflicts with the evil powers who would assail the town. The signs of these nocturnal struggles are seen the next day in trees broken down and uprooted, the ground torn up, and large stones split and thrown around.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The scary Mayan spirits
X'tabay - She manifests as a beautiful mestizo woman, perched in a lush ceiba tree combing her long hair, singing to entice her next victim (usually a drunken man) with her charms. In the wee hours of the night, she transforms into a thorny snake-dragon in his arms, causing him to die on a cacti. Those who survive are left completely crazy. Article I wrote about her and the unique Yucatecan liqueur associated with her.
Aluxes - They are child-sized and never sleep, roaming the jungle at night and entering houses, causing fevers and chills, so it is best not to try and catch them.  They can run forward and backward very quickly, and they throw stones, causing dogs to howl. Farmers burn incense and place markers in homage to the agricultural dieties, and in return for this respect, the Aluxes may protect their milpas. A travel writer visiting Isla Mujeres in the late 1950's was told about an encounter with Aluxes near the runway, by a member of the Lima family.
La Cola Negra -  This is ash colored snake that is 6-12 feet long, with a black tail that is wide and forked, which it puts into the nose of a breastfeeding women while it steals her milk. In Maya it is called La Ekuneil. In Mexico in general, the snake that steals human milk is known as Chayilcán. Link
Cucalkin - This is Mayan for "priest without a neck". This aberration roams the roads and countryside of the Yucatan, wearing a religious habit.  It walks with arms extended, goosestepping, with its head and eyes planted in its chest.  In the late 1800's, two campesinos overcame their fears during an encounter and scared one away with a knife, and after searching for a long time they found it in a tree. Link
Che Vinic -  The Man of the Woods, or Salonge, is a huge fellow without bones or joints. If he lies down he cannot rise without extreme difficulty; therefore he sleeps leaning against a tree.
       His feet are reversed, with  heels in front, and  toes behind. He is red-colored,  larger and stronger than a bull, and carries a stick the size of a tree-trunk. He watches for those who stray through the woods, and, if he can, will seize and devour them.
      But a ready-witted man has always a means of escape. All he has to do is to pluck a green branch from a tree, and waving it before him, begin a lively dance. This invariably throws the Wood Man into convulsions of mirth. He laughs and laughs until he falls to the ground, and once down, having no joints, he cannot rise, and the hunter can proceed leisurely on his journey. It is singular, says Dr. Berendt, how widely distributed is the belief in this strange fancy. It recurs in precisely the same form in Yucatan, in Peten, in Tabasco, around Palenque, etc. LINK/source
El Chivo Brujo - This one is more of an urban legend, and has origins in Campeche, where an arms dealer is said to have used the superstition to his advantage. This male witch-goat has the torso of a hairy man with the head and legs of a goat. It has large twisted horns, and evil red eyes which can drive men mad. It is incredibly strong, preys at night, and likes to remove the meat from your bones. LINK
    QUESO RELLENO:   Edam Cheese stuffed with picadillo (seasoned ground meat & finely diced vegs), with a white & a red sauce.
Picadillo is similar to hash, but with different seasoning. The seasoned ground meat is cooked with very finely diced vegs. Included in the recipe often are: green peppers, onion, tomatoes, garlic, bay leaf, cloves, cumin,olives, cinnamon, chile.  It means "bits & pieces", and is often made from a mix of ground beef and pork.
Chuletas a la Yucateca is made by marinating pork chops  in achiote and sour orange juice, and other recado* spices may be added. They may be grilled or fried to brown them, then baked (and may be covered with banana leaves while baking.)
 Poc chuc is grilled pork slices, marinated first with sour orange* & seasonings that may include garlic, onions, achiote ricado*, & black pepper.
*Recado: spice paste with some combination of cloves, cinnamon, black pepper, oregano, cumin, garlic, coriander, vinegar, and sour orange. Comes in many variations, of which the most common is achiote recado.
*Achiote: from the seeds of the annatto plant, used for flavor & color in some recados, tikinxic (grilled fish), pibils, poc chuc, & many other yucatec dishes. Sold in cakes (pressed powder) & often combined with sour orange to make a paste or marinade.
    • Daily Update: I just have to start by saying happy birthday to my daughter Abigail. Happy Birthday sweetheart. Last day of the clinic today. We weren’t sure if would do a fifth day but we have lots of animals and everyone was up for it. What a fantastic group of volunteers, they’ve been terrific. I love this picture, talk about “a deer in the headlights,” these poor dogs just don’t’ know what’s going on but it’s all good in the end. On the sad side the distemper is really on the rise, we lost two dogs yesterday. I try not to post negative things but this distemper is the worst. Good for North America for keeping it under control. It’s just so preventable with vaccines. We have a meeting tomorrow to put together a plan. Here is something new: We are excited to announce that we’ve partnered with Compación to bring you some exclusive Limited Edition apparel! Ha ha, Isla Animals has never had a T shirt of it’s own, only once for the K9K, that was part of another group raising money for a school here, but this one is just for Isla Animals. So,for every item you buy, Compación will donate US$7.00 to Isla Animals. Please click on any of the links below for more information. This is a limited time offer (Nov. 6-16) and now is your chance to get hold of some in high fashion to support our work here on the island. Thanks! Don’t forget to vote.
